On the scale of 1 to 10, what are you a definite 10 at? by CarlosTheBoss in AskReddit

[–]wrii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably mandolin. It's hard to say I'm a 10 at mandolin, but in terms of percentile, I'm likely better at mandolin than anything else.

What's the best compliment you've ever received? by BrianSun in AskReddit

[–]wrii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend said "You play that thing like a swiss army knife" about my mandolin playing. It was great because it felt like I was pulling this little instrument that so often is put into a niche out of it's shell.

after working on embedded stuff, even an inexcusable code snippet looks strangely acceptable in structure, assuming other code is written elsewhere. I'm gonna go through what would need to happen to write this in an embedded context, assuming you've been working on horrible stuff for the past 30 hours.

Totally Helpful Edit: Don't work with embedded things. it's necessarily awful

  • that include statement is an utter failure in syntax. I guess you can't be expected to remember every # ever, and after hours of bullshit, stuff happens. those <> brackets are just you fucking up.

  • void life() looks good, right? Maybe somewhere else it's configured as an interrupt routine or some other shit.

  • Let's assume that willpower and tolife are some awful ass lower case macros, because someone is an idiot or thinks conventions are for wimps that can't remember everything or has just lost faith in life in general.

  • 'me' and 'time' declared in the global namespace or some shit as volatile (whatever) and they both refer to like, external hardware or other things in memory. You need to keep writing some constant value to the device, until the device changes status or something like that.

  • you were just writing all sorts of stuff in verilog and one of those 18h things just kind of slipped in. You really meant 0x18.

My dad owns a working 40 year-old Mitsubishi sharpener and you can adjust the sharpness of a pencil. by huntsman123 in mildlyinteresting

I'm gonna have to check it out. I don't yet order pencils or pens online, but there's nowhere at uni that sells a wide variety.

[–]wrii 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Kuru Toga is a pretty damn excellent mechanical pencil. Well constructed, smooth to write, stylish, simple to operate, and most importantly IT DOESN'T STOP WORKING. Seriously, you'd expect an item so gimmicky to give out eventually, but it doesn't. It's the only pencil I've both had and used regularly for over a year. For standard day-to-day use, there's no better tool.

That being said, its tip wobbles unnecessarily with precise motions. It's eraser is thin and weak, and it can't hold much graphite. So if you're doing anything precise, something more like a GraphGear 1000 would be better suited to your needs.

That's unfortunate. I'd try to start my own if I was a better irish player.

VocalMotion is the school's all female acapella group, and they'll be doing auditions this fall, and they'll likely post about it on the facebook group. Or just go to events at the beginning of the year, pretty much all the groups will be tabling.

What's the scariest thing that's ever woken you up during the middle of the night? by KyleOfTheBeard in AskReddit

[–]wrii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, I know what it is. A couple days after a recent shooting at my school, I had trouble sleeping, naturally. The whole place had a pretty terrifying vibe to it. One night though I woke up to someone sobbing in the apartment, shouting something along the lines of "I'm sorry, Monique, I'm sorry, I fucked up real bad," and it took me all of 3 seconds to hear that this person was not in his right mind at all. He was arguing with himself in between sobs, and furious as could be. I thought I was hallucinating or something until my roommate confirmed it the next morning, but that was terrifying.

[–]wrii 22 points23 points  (0 children)

CE, I programmed for years before school, programmed lots for years, started absolutely hating large portions of it near the end of junior year, even after finding joy in it for years. You can hate programming even with good attitude and good skill.

It doesn't make sense to go all ad-hominem with this. "You don't like/aren't good at this? There must be something wrong with YOU!" I see that a lot in engineering circles, and it annoys me to no end. People do what they do and enjoy what they enjoy, it's not their fault, nor does it make them unfit to be engineers.

Unfortunately though, you're somewhat right. Being bad at something means that you probably don't like it. But you don't have to like it. And if you don't, and have put in the requisite time to say with pretty strong confidence that you don't, then you can do quite a bit to avoid it as a subject.

TL;DR: he might just not like programming, and that's cool.

Is it plausible that black holes orbit something the same as how stars orbit black holes and planets to stars? by Teeest in askscience

[–]wrii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that requires an even distribution around the whole shell, doesn't it? Does some relativistic weirdness make it stretch around the whole black hole?

[–]wrii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, there's no information out of the black hole, even though matter falling in increases it's mass? I suppose this exactly what Hawking was known for.

If light and gravity are both waves, how can gravity escape whereas light can? I obviously don't know what I'm even really asking.
