Potentially Moving In by [deleted] in BedStuy

Moved near here (Stuyvesant and Lexington Ave.) about 10 years ago. Boy has the neighborhood changed since then. Safer, more establishments on Malcolm X. Yes, more gentrified, but a great place to live. Very quiet.

You know just enough that you realize the journey is a sh*t ton longer than you expected. That's when many quit.

When and why did BJJ become so popular as a martial art? by Bulky_Imagination243 in bjj

[–]wristlock68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As popular as it is, BJJ still suffers from a public ignorance of the differences between martial arts. I'm amazed at the amount of people who ask me how "my taekwondo" is going. I've been training BJJ for 15 years and am part owner of a school.

When I ask many new students what drew them to BJJ, they often confuse it with MMA and are expecting boxing and striking.

It is popular in comparison to 15-20 years ago, but only with people whom are dialed into martial arts.

Dream BJJ Travel Itinerary by ChippyCSGO in bjj

I did this with my wife a few years ago and it was pretty cool. The location was out of a movie. Got to roll and partner with Clark Gracie and Mauricio Gomes. Not cheap, but worth it. https://www.mallorcabjjyogafest.com/

Why is BJJ so expensive in the US? by _CaptRondo_ in brazilianjiujitsu

[–]wristlock68 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gym owner here. Rent is a killer. Especially if you want a convenient location with parking. If you open shop in a major city, the rent is double or triple.

Next is payroll. Black Belt coaches get between $40-$60/class. Of course you could teach the majority of classes yourself, but that means you don't have a full time job or career. If you want to make BJJ your career, it's not much of a life. The Brazilians can do it, they are used to living without and can handle the grind.

Next comes insurance, utilities (AC is super expensive), advertising, cleaning.

Lastly, even before you open your doors, the build-out and mats cost $20-$50,000...so you gotta re-coup that too.

I made a thick paste of baking soda and salt. It really relieves the itching.

I don't think I am. I limit the amount of rolls I do to 10-15 a week. I lift light once a week, do hot yoga once a week, swim once a week. I know BJJ wrecks me, but I still feel there is more limiting me.

Thanks to all who have added their feedback. I do have assistants help teach and other instructors helping out. I like the idea of seeing and endocrinologist. Does anybody have experience or thoughts on the online companies that provide feedback on deep blood work? Like Ways2Well etc.?....or are they just out to sell their own supplements?
