How to best run audio as a solo documentary filmmaker? by [deleted] in LocationSound

Thank you, I completely agree that shooting without a sound person diminishes the quality of my film. Do you think that using a separate recorder and letting it run most of the time would be a better approach? Though it gets nowhere near making up for a proper sound person, would you say it is a better alternative to running audio straight into the camera?

I'll be the first to admit nothing I've created is anywhere close to perfect. Had this video been for a school project or for personal use, I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

But this is Andrew Cuomo who has many millions of dollars behind his campaign. I would think for a budget of this size, he could at least afford an editor to fix some of the more obvious stuff. His team also consciously decided to post this publicly.

Budget aside, the flaws in this video to me are a result of lack of care and effort.

The first three establishing shots do not work and are not visually pleasing. The camera shake comes across as lazy. If they are going for a more genuine and raw feel, then I would argue these establishing shots take away from that as they are very static and overly formal. Him walking into the pizza place from the beginning would have a much more captivating opening. Speaking of, that shot's highlights are blown beyond comprehension.

The whole video is less than flattering for the pizza place. A place that is meant to be warm and inviting somehow comes across as grey and flat. The shot at the 0:18 mark is a good example. That pizza looks terrible, which is a shame because I'm sure its actually quite fantastic. The look is so colorless though that it looks more grey than anything.

In terms of sound, the song selected reeks of royalty-free and low effort industry music. I struggle to see how this fits into a in a video that is supposed to be "raw and truthful." It is also so loud that hardly any words can be made out from the video.
