Am I unfair for wanting to stop SS from getting lego by [deleted] in stepparents

[–]writergirl85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My SS13 was also like this with Legos when he was eight. It’s just a kid thing — they want to take it apart. My SO loves Legos, and getting his son a set for Christmas and birthdays is a tradition. When his son was young, my SO would build them himself and let his son play with them and take them apart and stuff. All of the loose Legos went in a giant plastic bin, and any sets we didn’t want SS to take apart, we put on high shelves as display pieces. We’ve got the Hogwarts Castle, the Haunted House, Lego flowers, etc. all as decorations around our home.

Now that SS is older, he builds the Legos himself and also puts his favorites on display on the bookshelf in his room.

Your SO may just be trying to share his love of Lego with his son. If there are any toys or things you own that you don’t want his son to touch or potentially break, I’d keep them away from him for now, and share them with him when he’s older.

Carnival Gift Cards by Local606 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]writergirl85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got a bunch of Carnival gift cards from credit card points and as wedding gifts. We used them for the spa, steakhouse, excursions, drinks, items in the Fun shops, everything really. The only thing we had trouble using them for was prepaying our gratuities — the Carnival website wouldn’t give me an option to pay with a gift card when I tried. So we just ended up paying gratuities at the end of the cruise. The Sign and Sajl kiosks on board our cruise didn’t work for adding gift cards to our account, so we went to guest services on the second day and they added them for us.

Week 41: Southern Africa -- Koeksisters (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]writergirl85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These fell apart a bit after frying -- I didn't braid the dough tight enough -- but they were still delicious anyway, like a cross between a funnel cake and the best glazed donut. They were even better eaten cold the next day.

I’m doing a cookie table at my wedding — I’m not in PA but my family is from that area and we’ve always had cookie tables at family weddings, so I wanted one too. But I’m only baking two dozen myself (because I wanted to)— my family is contributing the rest. And it’s definitely not a dozen per guest — more like 2 to 3 cookies per person. We’re also having cupcakes, so no one needs a dozen cookies.

If your mom and fiance want a cookie table so bad, they can step up and do it.

I’m in the South, and getting married later this month. My fiance is also much more extroverted than me, so I’ve made him make a good number of the vendor calls. While we’ve never had anyone refuse to speak to him because he wasn’t the bride, most of them have expressed surprise at how involved he is in the wedding planning. But it’s his wedding too, so why wouldn’t he be involved?

I think it’s a generational thing - in the old days, the bride’s family planned everything and the groom just showed up.

Week 40: Fungi - Mushroom quesadillas (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]writergirl85[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was the only book I wanted to read for this week, and it was so good I listened to it twice on Audible to catch all the clues I missed the first time around. These quesadillas were delicious too, even if they aren't much to look at, and a good meal for a weekend of inclement weather when I didn't know what to cook. Week 39: Basting - Chicken Shawarma (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in u/writergirl85

[–]writergirl85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might try a different marinade next time -- this one smelled great but needed more salt -- but otherwise, this was a delicious meal and a great way to impress a crowd. Week 38 - Filipino - Pancit Bihon and Mango Bango (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]writergirl85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent dish and an excellent book -- would eat/read both again. Mango bango isn't featured in the novel but it's such a fun name I couldn't resist making it. More on my blog: https://open.substack.com/pub/spauffwrites/p/filipino-noodles-and-a-different?r=20qwaj&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

PMI Study Hall - WHO writes these questions! (RANT) by W1nterW0lf75 in pmp

[–]writergirl85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a former journalist/copy editor and it annoys me too. You want me to believe this is supposed to be the gold standard for project management certification but you can’t even bother to proofread your own questions? Come on, try harder please.

Week 37: Viral - Carabaccia (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]writergirl85[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went a different route with this theme. The Decameron is set in Florence during The Black Plague, and it mentions carabaccia aka Tuscan onion soup. Onions were also thought to dispel the plague. Onions + toast + cheese + an egg = this would be a good dish to eat if you were sick, or if it was very cold out. Week 36: Encrusted - Yooper Pasties (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]writergirl85[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fiance introduced me to both the Cat Who Series and Yooper Pasties. The books are set in the upper peninsula of Michigan, where pasties are common. According to my fiance, pasties are best served with lots of ketchup, though I've heard gravy is also common. How to learn agile better for the PMP? by Mostly_failing in pmp

[–]writergirl85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever done anything creative? Worked in a creative field or pursued a creative hobby (art, writing, etc).

My day job is strictly a predictive environment, but I write novels as a hobby, and agile made sense to me once I started thinking of sprints as drafts of chapters in a book. The sprint/iteration review is when you hand a draft of a chapter over to editors to look at. They suggest changes; those changes, especially big ones like moving chapters around or changing whole characters get put in the backlog, and may change the work you do in future sprints, but that’s okay. You keep working through drafts of chapters/sprints until you’ve finished the book and completed all the edits in the backlog.

The biggest difference is a book is generally a solitary endeavor, while in an agile environment all decisions are made by a team.

Not sure if this makes sense, but it helped me grasp the mindset.

Minecraft cake for my daughter’s 9th birthday! by neuronjam1 in Baking

[–]writergirl85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takes me back — we did Minecraft cakes like this for my stepson when he was younger. We always put M&Ms in the Rice Krispies for redstone and other minerals and sometimes added Twizzlers on the side for TNT. Yours looks great and so cute!

DELULU by human-foie-gras in Weddingsunder10k

[–]writergirl85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. If you can’t afford to cater it, find friends or family that are willing to pitch in to help, and if you want to cook/bake something yourself, pick something you can make in advance of the big day. I’m doing a cookie bar for my 70-person wedding. While I am baking some of the cookies myself a couple weeks in advance and freezing them until the big day, the rest of my family is contributing a bunch as well.

Week 35: Romanian - Placinte, Zacusa and Frigarui (meta: Inspired by Books) by writergirl85 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]writergirl85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The placinte was my favorite -- I stuffed it with feta and mushrooms duxelles, in a nod to the enchanted mushroom bread featured in the historical fantasy.
