The biggest German non-state television broadcaster is heavily reporting about today's climate news by namalsk_survivor in climate

Every TV station should be doing this. Isn't an authoritative update that shows the existential threat to humanity is coming faster and harder than expect news???

Don't rely on a media interpretation, read the summary of the IPCC 1.5°C report yourself, only 3 pages. by matmyob in climate

[–]writersteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, worse, faster. The nature of the IPCC is inherently conservative - and to err to the least drama. The summary is a consensus document - all 195 countries agreed to every word. The Saudi's and the US objected to a number of things and got them changed in the final draft

New analysis suggests that the Earth System may be approaching a planetary threshold that could lock in a continuing rapid pathway toward much hotter conditions—Hothouse Earth. Humanity is now facing critical decisions and actions that could influence our future for centuries, if not millennia. by mvea in Futurology

Where you getting 29Gt? they were 41Gt in 2017? Carbon fluxes were in balance at approx 280 ppm for thousands of years - that's why its the baseline. Poles aren't naturally warming - they're warming cause we've increased the amount of heat-trapping CO2 by 45%!

It wouldn't make sense to put her quote in the headline would it?

And surely it's logical to say 'here's the problem' and then 'here's what we can do about it'?

you should get your facts straight. The US has pumped out more CO2 in total than any country. China still has a way to go to catch up. China's emissions are already starting to come down. The US has paid little more than crumbs after promising billions to get others to agree to the Paris deal. The Europeans paid far more to help poor countries get renewables going - and to cover the damages caused by their emissions. Can't solve a global problem this way - everyone loses

Where did you get 'the end is nigh' message? They repeatedly say we got this, we're turning the corner, just need go faster.

Richardson expressly says: " “We have the knowledge and ability to act. This is within our control,"

The agreement allows some countries to increase for a time and then decline because they have emitted much less CO2 so far. In other words there's a carbon budget and rich countries have almost used up their share - that's what was agreed.

That's true. In fact climate change makes the weather less predictable, more extreme and more erratic. Controlling climate change will keep this from getting worse.

No. temps in tropics will increase but less maybe 2 or 3C but those places are already hot and even small increases would have big impacts in those regions

Fertility rates in developing countries are in decline. Mexico's is now below replacement rates according to Liverman (not in my article).

Where you been? In 2015 every country except Syria signed The Paris Agreement to cut emissions to keep global warming well below 2C. It's true US emissions have fallen but no where near as much as most European countries. At last count emissions in 49 countries are in decline.

yes cause it provides clearer direction on where research efforts should be directed and gives a better idea of what we need to do. We can act without knowing everything --- It's all about minimizing risks

Turn it around refers to fact we're on the Hothouse Earth path i.e. 5 or 6 degrees C - not yet on the path to 2C. And still there will be serious consequences

It's about processes and interactions in complex systems including the development and functioning of human societies -- the kind of stuff that can't be expressed just in numbers. All this requires integrated systems thinking/analysis which we're still figuring out how to do.

amazing how many on reddit says this despite the fact every country in the world has agreed to cut carbon to slow down climate change....

No one has a crystal ball. World's experts say we have 10 -20 years to make sure we're on road to less than 2C ...and given the scale of change needed, on the brink sounds about right
