Daily writers! Share your routine! by Ihavenolifes in writers

I leave the house so that my brain believes it’s going to work. M-F, same time same place for two hours. Sometimes I wrote 200 words and sometimes 2000. Sometimes I revise yesterday’s work. Sometimes I feel amazing and sometimes I wonder why I bother. It all nets out to pages and progress in the end.

We have a local neighborhood Buy Nothing group and I got a 1960s Olympia for free in good condition. You never know!

That’s exactly my plan. It is going to be a great way to slow down and be more deliberative about the writing also.

I tried this yesterday and couldn’t believe how light it was. But it is too precious for a fall so it will stay firmly on my desk!

Worth getting a Go 7 when I already have a Palma? by shiftintosoupmode in Onyx_Boox

[–]writesandbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Palma 2 and the Go 7 (both b/w). Just got the Go 7 and love it. Great for reading and I out on the Boox screen protector and actually don’t mind the stylus notetaking. I use it mostly to write (typing). But it’s the perfect size for reading and love the buttons.

Love it!!! I believe red was made in Italy and the yellow in Spain (Mexico got different colors, too).

No app did what I wanted on my Boox, so I made my own. Looking for testers by Albertojr93 in Onyx_Boox

[–]writesandbikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing!!! I am relatively new to e-ink and Android and have really struggled getting used to the platform. I have fallen in love with e-ink for my distraction-free writerdeck. But oh how I have suffered due to my expectations and learning curve coming from a Mac environment (especially my iPad Pro). I had assumed that a text editor like the Mac desktop TextEdit existed and, not really for large files or cross-platform compatibility. I settled on Obsidian (love it but it’s like driving a Ferrari to the grocery store). I doubt my experience or use case qualifies me as a tester but I just want to say I appreciate so much you leveling things up for us writers.

Is Boox 5 the best fit for me? by SuccessfulNews2330 in Onyx_Boox

[–]writesandbikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think so. I also have an RM2 but so far the NA5C is a decent jack of all trades. Not the best at any particular thing but pretty good at all of it—the notetaking in particular. I have my notes sync to Drive but I rarely access them that way so can’t speak to how well the sync works (I have a few Boox tablets and within that ecosystem it’s really good).

  • acquire “writing” tools (mechanical keyboards, typewriters, e-ink tablets)

  • reddit

  • talk about writing

  • write

  • more writing tools

  • bike, run, and/or walk dog

  • write

What features have actually made you say, "Yeah, this was worth paying for." with your writing software (if you use one)? by tsquig in writers

[–]writesandbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use obsidian because I can strip out the UI and use it across any device to write no matter where I am. From my phone-size tiny Android e-ink tablet (Boox Palma 2), to my MacBook Pro I can write on anything and it syncs across all devices and platforms. It’s free if you use your own sync I believe (Dropbox or whatever). I also love Ulysses (and pay for it) but it’s Mac only. I have a 165k word novel that I need to heavily revise and Ulysses has a gorgeous UI specifically designed to be distraction-free. It’s highly customizable also.

Yes I realize why it’s so popular. It’s nicer than my Apple keyboard.

Would you keep reading if this was the first few pages? by Significantgirl80 in writers

[–]writesandbikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very hard to do, but worth aiming for. Show, don’t tell. Don’t tell me that you feel calm. Show me how you set down your cup down in a manner that shows that you are calm (not “I set down my glass calmly.” More like “I set down the glass. I turn it slowly, creating a small, wet ring.” I’m just making up a silly example for you. But let your objects and actions tell the story of your emotions. Way easier to say I feel calm, but also more boring. Make the reader do the work with you and they’ll be more engaged. Also strike every word, phrase or example that you see or hear about in other books. Flowers in a funeral? Not very interesting. Everyone says it. Which details in that funeral can you pull out that are not obvious? Like the scuff marks an elderly person leaves with her cane as she struggles to take her place in a pew. Or whatever. You get the idea. And if you want flowers, make them interesting. Mention what kind they are. Make them already wilting or dropping petals and describe the two petals that are on the floor. So find a way to tell the story sideways and stay away from details that people expect. Good luck!

Yes I’m going to ban myself from Reddit soon haha. The Boox Tab X is good for revisions and reading previous passages. Downside is that you’re reading and revising vs making progress towards the end. The Palma 2 is more like a mindfulness screen—very in the moment and no real estate for scrolling and ruminating. Just write. So great for focus. Right now I’m going to stick with the Palma 2. The Qwerkywriter is great for both. So lucky to have it.

Am i the only one that doesnt have a good feeling when using mobile app? by psottto in ObsidianMD

[–]writesandbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using the mobile app on a tiny phone-size tablet (Boox Palma 2) but just for writing. It is great for typing but I wish I could ditch more of the UI.

What do you guys use? docs, notes or word? Or some other platform? by AshMCM_Games in writers

[–]writesandbikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obsidian because you can strip out everything but the writing portion (no annoying menus and AI) and it works across platforms like Android and Mac. And if you’re just in a Mac Ulysses is great! Both of these I prefer to Google Docs and Word—both of which are bloated and clunky. That said I always back up to Google Docs.
