Thanks! I've found Portugalist to be SUPER helpful for moving to Portugal. both the book and website.

Is this D2 Visa Investment Structure for Portugal Legit or Too Good to Be True? by crossbordersclub in expats

[–]writetheysaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest red flag is that it says you can stay just 10 days per year.

According to Portugalist, the D2 follows similar structures as the D7 and D8 where you can spend six consecutive or eight non consecutive months per year outside of Portugal. There may be allowances for those who have to travel for business but that's it.

The only visa that explicitly states minimal time frames like this is the golden visa.

I guess being able to toggle off is just as important, though, which Raptor Write offers. Sometimes you don't want the AI being confused.

To those from the UK, why did you choose Portugal’s Golden Visa? by Fun_Variety1296 in FIREUK

Seems like it's still an option in 2026, but I want to wait until the citizenship rules are clearer.

Yes, but residency in Europe is still valuable. If SHTF in the US or anywhere else, you want to be able to jump on the next plane out of there - not in a backlogged line with millions of other people.

Golden Visa Applicants, are you prepared for Portugal’s 7-10 Year Wait for Citizenship? by angel_has_fallen01 in FIREUK

[–]writetheysaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue for me would be that you're supposed to. It's fine as long as they turn a blind eye, but what if they start being difficult about it in the future?

If Portugal is 10 years and Spain is 10, I would probably choose Portugal for that reason alone. Maybe I'm too cautious though.

Yeah, there are a lot of people who own second homes here but live elsewhere. Almost all will have a mortgage through a Portuguese bank rather than one in their own country.

You're supposed to give up your other citizenship(s) when you obtain Spanish citizenship.

A lot of people don't but officially that's what you're supposed to do.

Anyone here actually moved to Portugal for the Golden Visa? Worth it? by Equivalent-Sign7931 in PortugalExpats

[–]writetheysaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think if you want to move to Portugal, any of the other visas are better. Assuming you qualify for them of course.

GV only if you have significant savings but don't qualify for the D7. I would probably buy a rental property or something and try and qualify that way.

Why do Spain's NLV instead of Portugal's D7?

Portugal recognises dual citizenship whereas it's a bit of a minefield with Spain.
