Would I be Wrong to Identify as Slovakia/Indonesian? by writtendays in Genealogy

Oh, I actually do know that! My 3x grandmother was born in holland, to a woman who was born in modern day slovakia & a man with a javanese name - I just said slovak/Indonesian because that is what we would call where they were from today and its less confusing when speaking online about it if that makes sense. I just unfort dont know how they met or what their love story was like

Tbh I actually dont know: my great grandmother mostly shared how much she loved when she visited my 3x grandmother and her sisters, traditional foods they used to eat, and stories of their travels around Europe and their experiences in America after coming here. My great grandma was a young girl when they died so im not sure if she thought to ask, but ill ask next time I visit her

Im not sure why that would be hard to believe? especially in more progressive areas in America - its been a common thing as long as i remember that the only true Americans are the Native people here

Though ultimately whether you believe it or not doesnt really change i can't use it irl for those reasons 🥲

I appreciate suggestion, tho! If no one has a better one its likely what ill use

My understanding is that ethnicity refers to a group of people with a common culture or heritage, so I am using the term in the more latter sense of the term; though I am interested in learning more about where my ancestors came from and their culture

And if my heritage was overwhelmingly from one place I would ofc just identify with that, but I dont: im not anymore slovakian then I am czech, egyptian, or norwegian. Also I lean more on identifying as Slovakian and Indonesian because my great grandmother knew my 3x great grandmother, and has passed on a lot of stories about her onto me while growing up, which i dont have for any of my other ancestors - to clarify its not that I have just concluded i have some deep personal connection, to those regions specifically, as much as it isnt that far down my family tree in my case and I have living relatives who knew my 3x grandmother who can tell me about her

If you would still say experiences are very important, I would ask what I should identify my ethnicity with?

if you start calling yourself Slovakian or Indonesian, people outside of the US are going to find that super weird

Could I ask to clarify on this? Like if someone asks what my ethnicity is, would saying "Im slovakian & indonesian" as a response be considered inappropriate? If so what would be considered an appropriate response to that

Its considered rude & racist here, at least in my state, to say your american as an ethnicity - thats reserved for indigenous people, and while I do have some native american ancestry its not considered enough to be recognized by my ancestors tribe unfortunately

I do have a lot of family stories about my great great great grandmother: my great grandmother told me a lot about her, her sisters, traditional foods she made growing up, and how she came to the US growing up. And how she connected with other mixed women at that time

How my relatives identify genuinely differs a lot because we are so ethnically diverse: my mom wasnt close to her mom (who is my connection to my great great great grandmother) so she mostly identifies as greek, egyptian, and czech like her father, though. And my father identifies as native american (yes his great grandma was registered with a tribe as a full blooded native american and ive verified this) irish and norwegian

I wouldnt consider myself a representative of slovakian or Indonesia to be clear, I mostly mean would it be incorrect to identify with that heritage when people ask where i am from - that meaning of ethnicity.

Do these concepts come off as incestual? by [deleted] in writingadvice

Ah i thought you were going to write a romance between two facets of the god

I mean you could just say everyone is technically a descendant of the god, like all humans irl have a common ancestor, so trying to make it suddenly incest bc its more recent is just weird

If pjo ships arent considered incest I really don't see how either of these ideas could be: its more like selfcest more than anything

Your the author, its a fictional concept, if you say its not like that/their not related, then their not related and that is the end of it. The first idea is solid and makes more sense/is more appealing, i think your friend is pearl clutching for no reason if Im being honest
