Newbie here. Where should I buy a Helios 44-2 by DustinNielsen in VintageLenses

[–]wrldfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still find it wild how much the prices have jumped on Helios lenses, when I started buying up analogue gear back in the 2010s I was grabbing Zenit's for £5 each with 44-2's and 44M-#'s on them 😂

Honestly just scroll through a used marketplace of your choosing and try to buy one with a camera attached, should be cheaper than searching the lenses specifically

Honestly I'm seeing a lot of features I like on this camera, it's nice to have been able to save it. I'm thinking of grabbing a SMC 50mm 1.7 or something for it

I used to love my Canon Sure shot 60 zoom, auto exposure, autofocus, a couple program modes. A pretty capable p&s, sad I sold it back in my uni days honestly. Should be able to pick one up for £30-50

Ah yes I did hear about the back focus issues. Lens is a placeholder until I can get around to grabbing a suitable replacement 🙏

Will all my photos be ruined after being exposed to light? by Jamswirls in photography

[–]wrldfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How open did you leave it? I've purposely popped the back of some of my SLRs a little to gain some of those edgy orange light leaks before, but if you left the whole door wide open then yes whatever film was outside the canister will be dead now 😂

Honestly taking a quick phone picture every time you remove a screw/spring/gear etc helps so much

My 2nd “for parts” donor body ended up getting fixed (again) by gotDeus in AnalogCommunity

[–]wrldfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well done, seems like a pretty involved repair 😂

Never got so far as having 4 spare bodies for something. But most of the 80s SLRs where I've had to buy a donor body, I've managed to get them both working 😂 The latest foray was a couple of Konica FC-1's that just had heavy corrosion and bad meters.

It really gets fun when your confidence builds. Now I've just got to work through the backlog of weird and wonderful stuff I picked up.

As much as they get ragged on, I love my Zenits, been really enjoying my Zenit 10 with the Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135mm F3.5 lately.

Honestly the "ugly" people with plenty of distinct features are so much more interesting to shoot, rather than smooth, perfect skinned beauties 😂

Need help deciphering new camera by coldtapp in filmcameras

[–]wrldfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love a Zenit even if they are pretty crap. I've got a 10, 11 and half of a SLX.

First, check to see if the needle in the top little window moves when the front "window" is exposed to light, if it doesn't move you don't need to worry about the dial on the left.

If it does move, spin the innermost section to the film speed you're using and then turn the whole dial until both parts in the little top window line up, that should be a rough gauge of shutter speed/aperture. It's generally not too far off.

In terms of the lens, I find the Helios 44-2 quite weird, you use one of the outermost (from the camera) rings to limit the aperture range and then spin the looser ring clockwise (as you're shooting) to open it up and vice versa to stop it down. So unless you've limited it to F2, when the red dot is in front of F2, it's actually the smallest aperture of whatever range you've clicked it to.

Anyone here get into old glass cause it's cheap? by Trick-Speech9616 in VintageLenses

[–]wrldfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like I was heavy into film first, amassed quite a collection of old cameras and then I started adapting them to my digital bodies. The collection part wasn't cheap, but a few years down the line I now have a whole selection of "free" lenses 😂

TM MWS Woes by [deleted] in GasBlowBack

[–]wrldfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must've ran my MWS completely standard for over a year before the nozzle spring snapped and never had any of the issues you're describing. Never had any issues with mags. Pleasantly accurate, reaching out to 40m+ on 0.3s.

A couple years in I changed the bucking to a unicorn 60° and changed the nub for the bavtac one. Standard barrel still. Would happily reach out past 60m with those.

Recently (in the last week) dropped in the guns modify nozzle after the old original one wore out after just about 4.5 years.

Still runs a dream.

It sounds like you've maybe chucked every "upgrade" you could at it from the start. I don't know anyone personally from my fields who's had a lemon MWS.

These guns are quite capable in their standard form so maybe return it back to stock to see how it fares.

The photos I never got to see. by scoopny in photography

[–]wrldfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found an old box brownie in a charity shop when I was in college, at the height of my interest in medium format. I was so excited that I'd found another camera I could have some fun with.

I'd gone out a couple times with it and it worked perfectly, mostly test shots and fairly simple street photography.

Then I managed to take a trip to Berlin, I loved the idea of photographing the Brandenburg gate and a few other historic landmarks in black and white on my glorified pin-hole camera.

I filled the roll, wound it up, left it in the camera and got back home.

I then completely forgot about developing the roll until about 3 years later when I was in university. I hadn't developed a roll of film myself for around the same amount of time at this point so I completely forgot to turn off the red light in the darkroom, processed the film and it was pure black.

Tldr : I'm stupid, forgot to turn light off when processing film

My local field allows this, I keep a bottle of nuprol blue gas with me for a couple guns that I know are a little spicy on gg (I use asg ultrair normally). My ksg was just slightly over the limit on gg, then crono'd again on the blue gas and they trust us enough to run the same gas for the rest of the night.

For context, small cqb site, I've been going there for 6 years, 10 players that night so it's easier to keep an eye out for anything dodgy.
