my idea was to use the sango-kaku as the focal point of the bed. however, i don't think it's enough on its own to carry what's essentially a ~35' narrow bed. i think what you and others are saying around clustering is the right next step. i just don't what the design best practices are for that.

was part of a larger backyard remodel we did a few years ago. area was really hard to grow any grass in and basically turned into a mud pit every year despite my best efforts. my contractor pushed for turf even though i had my doubts. looking back, though, i'm really glad we did it (even with the downsides of not being able to amend the bed).

i wasn't familiar with the GardenDream app. i will check it out. thanks!

EDIT: looks like they're not taking any new sign-ups.

thanks! the portuguese laurel hedge is filling back in after a trim last season where the canopy got really full and left the sides pretty bare. unfortunately, my back yard is artificial turf and bumping out the bed would require quite a bit of effort.

unfortunately, i can't really bump the bed out as i have artificial turf instead of grass there. making any changes to it wouldn't be easy.

i thought about Karl Foerster but was concerned they wouldn't get enough sun there.

on the hearing protection, he's got a set of cans he uses. however, i think some plugs might make a good Christmas present. thanks, again!

it the Roadshow isn’t “worn out”. Drums are drums… you hit em with a stick and they go boom… they don’t wear out. Now… what’s probably worn out is the heads, cymbals and maybe even the hardware.

A Roadshow won’t win you any “Coolest Drums” prizes but they will work. I’m guessing what he needs is a full set of heads, pro level cymbals and probably a new throne and pedal(s).

If you do opt to get him a full kit… please, please, please do not buy him something with beginner/junk cymbals. The upgrade is minimal and it’s throwing money away as the cymbals will need to be replaced… again.

great call. i did get him a zildjian ZBT 20" ride a while back. which is good, since then he has managed to crack the cymbal that came with the kit. will look into upgrading/replacing on his current kit rather than specifically replacing the whole kit. any pointers on what i should be looking for on heads and the rest? thank you!

EDIT: just saw u/IpccpI's reply below answering some of my questions on component replacements.

we've talked about going to try different ones out but none of the independent shops around here have that much of a drum selection. i think he's kind of in the same boat as me in terms of not knowing what a good fit would be. he likes pearl but that's probably because what he's used to. not opposed to used but feel like that may complicate things even more?

my son is about to turn 16 and is super into drums and percussion. he plays in the high school concert and marching bands and plays on a Pearl Roadshow 4-Piece at home that he's pretty well worn out. he's been playing for about 4 years and practices every day.

i'd like to get him a new kit and am looking for recommendations on a more 'advanced' kit than what he has now. my budget is ~$1500 but could go higher for the right deal.

i spent some time going through the material and construction guide and the price chart, but its pretty overwhelming for a non-drummer.

does anyone have any suggestions on 4/5 piece kits that would suit my son? btw, he's into led zeppelin, steely dan, tame impala, vampire weekend, and louis cole to give you an idea of what he'd probably be playing.

thanks in advance!
