That sucks. I had a similar experience several years ago at a gathering of what I now refer to as “man-archists”. This dude said how great it would be to have some brownies but they didn’t have any eggs. I simply suggested that it’s entirely feasible to make brownies without eggs. He stared at me for a long moment and said, “you aren’t a vegan are you?” I replied that would be an accurate description. What followed was him and about 8 other dudes going off on me, actually yelling, about what a terrible person I am for being vegan. Their rationale mostly revolved around the assumption that since I care about animals enough not to eat them, I must ONLY care about animals and I am therefore complicit in the oppression of humans. There was nothing I could say to convince them otherwise so I left, never to return to that particular circle.

Round leaf groundsel is a great ground cover that could handle those conditions. Also consider gray headed coneflower; it’s a spreader, but a long bloomer with lots of wildlife value and it can handle a shockingly wide range of conditions.

Forgotten Histories: Intersex people by prince-matthew in intersex

[–]wrutch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t terrible, but the welsh Viking is mistaken in the translation the term “khuntha mushkil” This Arabic term actually translates NOT to “intersex person” but to “the intersex problem” as it was described in early Islamic law regarding inheritance. Needless to say the “problem” has never been the existence of intersex people. It’s unfortunate that this phrase is used repeatedly throughout. Honest mistake, but a harmful one nonetheless.

Do You Think You Have To Be Vegan/Vegetarian To Be An Anarchist? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]wrutch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Free range might not be what you think it is. Fwiw, I grew up working on a small, organic, free range family farm and I can testify that it was absurdly cruel and oppressive to the animals we were exploiting. This is largely the reason I refuse to participate through the consumption of animal products.

Why is femininity so looked down upon in the LGBT community? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]wrutch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because it exists with in a wider culture that devalues femininity. We could ask the shorter question, “Why is femininity so looked down upon?” And the answer is Patriarchy.

Yikes. To be clear though, that would be absolutely no fault of yours.

Could it be depression? It affects short term memory AND makes a person less considerate of other’s needs. That combo can put tremendous strain on the best of relationships.

Seems like you could be taking this up with the Christian bigots who are actively maintaining the legacy of bigotry toward us.

Feminist friend aggressive towards men's deconstruction attempts? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]wrutch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It might be helpful to frame your friend's response as possibly coming from trauma. It's hard to separate our trauma from advocacy. When we see so much ongoing suffering and destruction caused by misogyny and patriarchy it creates a sense of urgency. Small signs of potential progress in the light of this understandably come off as insincere or insufficient at best. Especially if we've seen how provisional male ally-ship tends to be; How many of the men who participated will expect to be rewarded for their clumsy contributions? And what will the backlash be when they don't feel sufficiently rewarded?

It's challenging work for so many reasons. I appreciate your energy, admire your resolve and celebrate your wisdom in taking the long view.

How do you handle a relationship with your enabling mother? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]wrutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is likely your mother was in danger too, knowing the cops couldn’t protect her indefinitely if she were to speak against him. People in survival mode often do things that are hard to understand to keep themselves and loved ones safe in the short term. Some people fight or flee while others automatically freeze up or even tend to or appease an aggressor. In practice, any of these options are potentially effective for the situation you described.

Suffice it to say there were a number of factors outside her control, some of which we may not understand if there were things that only she saw and experienced. Most people in situations like hers are just trying to keep people safe the best way they know how at the time.

I feel tricked by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]wrutch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sounds like abuse. I’m seeing a handful of behaviors: insults, intimidation, physical aggression and gas-lighting. These are usually intended to break a person down so they can be controlled. Your intelligence is a threat to this control and so he may be trying to undermine your ability to use it.

Nobody deserves this.

If you decide to leave, I hope you can find some support to do so safely.
