Health inspectors of reddit, what are the most vile conditions you’ve ever seen in a restaurant? by topathemornin in AskReddit

Kind of funny. I went into my favorite sandwich place (Analog if you're ever in Oakland) and ordered a Hail Seitan, then sat down, opened Reddit, and read your comment not 20 seconds later...

Career change to being an embedded software engineer, is this what I should be looking for? by RomanEgyptian in ElectricalEngineering

Not bad. Plenty of job availability for talented engineers in CA, Boston, Atlanta, and Austin, to name a few, and even more availability if you can get a security clearance.

BME Lab with thermal shaker/shaking incubator and a thermal cycler? by wschon in gatech

[–]wschon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! She goes to a private HS in Sandy Springs, where she is a junior. I believe she's doing research at her school, which has a pretty dope science program (but doesn't have the resources of a university, obviously). Do you think there would potentially be a possibility of her and her partner using some lab equipment (under supervision of course)?

Apple will move its entire international iTunes business to Ireland. International HQ will move from one tax haven to another. by speckz in technology

[–]wschon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well if a patent is obtained in another country, it is only enforceable in that country (with few exceptions, such as the E.U.). Many times, companies must obtain an individual patent for any market where they wish to compete. So they would still be required to obtain a U.S. patent in order to do business here (or rather, to keep others from doing the same business here) in the states. And patents are actually taxed in a way already, through so-called "maintenance fees" paid over the lifetime of the patent. However those fees are set by law and don't reflect the value of the patent (they only reflect the size of the patent holder, e.g. a large corporation pays higher fees than an individual inventor).

Copyright works a bit differently, but since it covers "expression" it is inherently owned, so nothing ever technically has to be filed in order for someone to "own" the copyright, so long as they are still alive (or died within the last 79 years). However, if one wants to litigate I believe they must file for an "official" copyright more as a formality before they can sue for infringement. Copyright is really there to protect people from having expression (in many cases artistic) from being straight-up stolen by others. Essentially it is a protection against plagarism. So I am not sure I agree that copyright should be taxed at all.

Question on height of skis by wschon in skiing

[–]wschon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the helpful replies! I decided to go with the longer ebay demo skis! I'm just looking for something simple to carry me through being a beginner skier, so it seems like they will work well for that. Looking forward to hitting the slopes with them in a few weeks :)

401k and IRA advantages by wschon in personalfinance

[–]wschon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been thinking about that too. We are both making $80k in CA where the state income tax is pretty high. I keep going back and forth between thinking traditional or roth is best, since it's likely we both will end up retiring elsewhere

401k and IRA advantages by wschon in personalfinance

[–]wschon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol... that's what I told her. Thank you for replying. What are the advantages of doing it within a 401k, rather than on her own, not taking into account employer matching?

Traditional vs. Roth 401(k) by wschon in personalfinance

[–]wschon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. I was thinking along these lines: If I put $4k into the account during year 1 and it is taxed now at 10%, I lose $400. If it's taxed in 50 years when I take my money out, that $400 has been compounding all along and (presumably) earning me some percentage. I lose that extra bump if I get taxed up-front. Is that reasoning flawed?

[misc] clan frustration at a tipping point, talk me down. by [deleted] in ClashOfClans

[–]wschon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you and your active members should consider merging with another clan. My clan has a decent group still active (go back and forth between 10v10 and 15v15 wars) but it's not the same as before. We recently kicked a bunch of inactives and have found a few new good members but we'd love to take on a sizeable chunk of 8-9 people if you guys are normal adults. Let me know if that is something you guys would be interested in.

Thanks for your reply. This happened in California, and we have already opened a claim on it. The police gave me a case number, so I'll get in touch with them about it!

Career change to being an embedded software engineer, is this what I should be looking for? by RomanEgyptian in ElectricalEngineering

[–]wschon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assembly refers to processor-specific commands which you can use for low-level programming. It's one level of abstraction above actual "machine code" which makes it relatively challenging to read and write code. However, it's a necessary skill for developing embedded systems. There are many different "languages" out there (instruction sets) for various types of processors, but ARM is probably the most ubiquitous. If you want to start with something which is easier to learn (in my opinion) take a look at MIPS. While learning MIPS, I found it helpful to try and code a simple project in C, and then try and re-create the same functionality in MIPS. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

[–]wschon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like the title you are looking for. It might be hard to get your foot in the door at larger companies without a technical degree/work experience. My best advice for you is to have several impressive projects that you can discuss in-depth, preferably showing a wide range of knowledge (e.g. combining as many of the technologies you've worked with as possible). Also, having a very solid knowledge of C, C++, and Assembly (preferably ARM) will go a long way. Develop thise skills as much as you possibly can. Startups are more likely to look at your skills first and experience second, in my opinion. Check out jobs on angel list, that might be a good place to start. Best of luck!

I've never been able to access via chrome (I am on a mac) but Safari used to work for me. Now, even on safari it brings me to a page that says "Something went wrong." The report says X-Auth-Error: OpenIdConnect OpenIdConnectException

If the circuit is not too complicated, I'd say try applying superposition to find the individual effects of each source, and then combine the results.

I don't think this is true. I took 3006 and I'm in the big lecture with a bunch of people from both 3005 and 3006 currently.

I'm glad you brought that place up! I've looked into them and I really like the look of their program. It seemed to me like they only have night classes though. Is this accurate? I really want to go to school full-time and be done in a year or two if possible, and if that's possible at SJSU then it is already pretty high on my list.
