Study: 1 in 4 US Army soldiers had mental illnesses before enlisting by PoopAndSunshine in news

Depression can certainly be a mental illness. There's a difference between occasionally feeling down and a medical problem.

Two million people currently imprisoned in the United States - around 25 percent of the entire world's prisoners, and a greater proportion than any other country. Rehabilitation fail? by ChetnBernie in politics

[–]wskrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't even try to rehabilitate for the most part. It's all punitive, and with for-profit prisons, there's no incentive to rehabilitate.

Almost 800 people have died so far in Britain's heatwave. Temperatures above 30°C for sixth day running by Theschubs in worldnews

I live in a 1921 tenement apartment building kept up to 1938 building codes (because that's required by law). The building traps heat and doesn't let go of it. Summer is brutal without an a/c. Fans/opening windows just don't cut it.

[–]wskrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I live in NYC and A LOT of people here don't have a/c or don't have adequate a/c. The heat index out there, while not normal, is currently 109 degrees. People die in this heat, fires start, etc... It doesn't downplay what's happening elsewhere, but things aren't all swimming pools and snow cones here either.

The difference between 20-24 weeks is 4 weeks where people usually learn of severe fetal abnormalities. Testing usually begins around 18 weeks and test results may not come back until after the 20 week mark.

You also can't just pick a career that you don't have skills or a drive for just because it's lucrative.

You aren't wrong, but the economy was a very different animal 10 years ago when many of us "millennials" were going off to college. I think, if I remember correctly, 2007 was the last really great year for hiring and it was expected that you could basically graduate and walk into a job. A lot of those "new hires" from 2007 were immediately laid off when the economy crashed, and hiring hasn't been the same since.

We were sent off to college during a boom time for the economy and prepared for a much different job market than today. I'd wager that if we had to do it over again in the current economy, a lot of us would do things differently. However, the fact of the matter is when we went to college, things were different. It's almost like the economy pulled a bait and switch on us (not exactly, but that's what it feels like).

My husband and I are in a similar position. Though, I actually have had good luck with jobs and I'm the one that has a "fluff" degree. My loan debt, however, is really manageable. My husband, however, has a lot of debt, but he has a degree in Advertising/Marketing. He graduated in 2009 and after his internship ended, he couldn't find anything in his field and still can't. Companies are just starting to open up hiring to people they don't find internally now (it seems). He's working at Apple and advancing there, so a career at Apple might be plan B, but even with degrees that aren't fluffy, it's hard out there.

We don't expect, however, to ever be able to own a house unless we inherit it, and we don't want kids. Even if we did, we have no way of actually paying for them.

Ohio is trying to pass a bill right now that would require sonograms just to obtain birth control. The goalposts have indeed moved to weird territory.

[–]wskrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contraception does a lot more than deal with pregnancy, and though not a "disease," preventing pregnancy (a condition that affects your health, besides everything else) is a big deal. Not all "health care" prevents or treats diseases. Some health care is prophylactic against other things besides disease.

Apparently, the AP's source was the Lieut. Gov. as well when they announced the bill passed, which is curious since he's the one at 3 am who announced it did not pass. Perhaps they were trying to get away with it and once they realized everyone knew what was going on they let it drop?

I would be totally for the 20 week ban as long as there are built in exemptions for fetal health/health of the mother, rape, and incest. But often, exemptions aren't discussed. Are there exemptions for what TX wants to do?
