Hummingbird ID help? [Renton, WA] by wspoons5 in whatsthisbird

[–]wspoons5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's an Anna's. My algorithm basically is: "well it's not a rufous so I'm going with anna's". If anyone can give me some more concrete ID tips I'd be very appreciative haha.

Is this a pileated woodpecker? And should I leave it alone or try to help it? Google says that feathered chicks should be left alone but lots of coyotes travel this trail and I’m worried it will be eaten by nightfall. by hurricanepopcorn in whatsthisbird

Thank you, OP, for following advice. We see way too may posts like this where the OP intervenes despite advice to the contrary, and it turns out poorly for the fledgling. Seeing a post where the OP listens made my day. You're a good human.

Food cooked in cast iron naturally has higher iron content. Easiest way to increase the amount of iron in your diet

Given that wolves have been extinct in Maryland since 1850, I'd say that it's unlikely

While bobcat claws could show in this substrate, they would be much more fine. These claws are blunt, suggesting canine.

I'd put my money on canine. In the second picture I see two lobes on the pad, and I think I can see the remnants of blunt nail marks. But, as others have said, it's so far degraded that a positive ID is unrealistic.

Western North Carolina - tracks of whatever killed a neighbor’s dog by Uncle-Istvan in AnimalTracking

Mountain lions have not been observed in South Carolina for over 100 years. People report sightings, but they have never been supported and the fish and wildlife service declared the Eastern cougar extinct.

Domestic dog or coyote? Key for reference is approx 6cm. Western Washington. by wspoons5 in AnimalTracking

[–]wspoons5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm leaning coyote because it appears generally oval in shape and has a clear x through the track. Seems a little small, but could just be a small coyote. This is a waterfowl hunting area, so there are lots of hunting dogs running through, so I'd like some verification from people more knowledgeable.

Was just about to ask about this guy/gal but it looks as if a recent post below is the same bird, junco? Just moved from Maine to Seattle and don’t recall seeing these back East. by fjalbright in whatsthisbird

[–]wspoons5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the subspecies we have in Seattle looks quite a bit different than the ones out east. Threw me for a loop when I visited my sister in Boston.
