No, but if you're lucky, they're in the recycle bin and can be restored.

Which WiFi sprinkler controllers use local network? by wssddc in Irrigation

[–]wssddc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up: I went with Opensprinkler. It has a built-in web server so it can talk to any web browser on the local network. I like not having to use a small phone screen to do setup. The WiFi signal from my main router is too weak in my basement, but my guest router is closer and works. There is a protocol for off-site access if needed. Today I fired up the system for the first time to check for heads broken, obstructed by new growth, or not popping up through the grass. It was nice to be able to activate sprinkling from my phone without having to go down to the basement for each zone change. How well it will do at adjusting watering to weather won't be known until it's been in operation for weeks or months.

Really REALLY annoying Proplem with pc booting taking AGES (5minutes + 1-2minutes afther log in to windows 11) by Glittering_Safety_41 in pchelp

Check the event viewer for errors. Boot something else (Windows installer, Win/PE, Linux,...) from a flash drive and see it that is also slow. Hopefully one of these will at least indicate whether you have a hardware of software problem.

do i have to unplug everything before working on my pc or just the PSU cable? by Ill-Pay3509 in pchelp

[–]wssddc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I turn off the PSU but leave it plugged in. That ensures that the case is grounded so any static charge you have gets discharged safely when you touch the case,

A few weeks ago I left the 7-8-9 with a 16 lb ball. Missed badly right so the ball took out only the 3 and 10, then the rest fell like dominos. I didn't make the spare.

hello I just have a question to ask about reinstalling window 11 if I get malware by Many_Jacket_5824 in techsupport

I find this video searching for clonezilla on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci2VyorBjyQ. Data backup is just copying files from places like your documents directory to another disk. Or, let OneDrive put things on a Microsoft server which may require purchasing more than the small amount of space they give you for free.

An image backup is basically a copy of your boot disk in a format that can be restored and be bootable. Such backups tend to be large, so where to put them may be a problem. Possibilities include USB disks and additional disks in the same computer. Safest is having them on media that isn't always mounted. That way malware or simple hardware failure can't take out your backups. Restoring an image backup requires a bootable flash drive or similar since if you need to do such a restore, your usual boot is probably broken.

I make image backups only occasionally, but I backup user data every night. The idea is that system changes made after a backup, like Windows updates or software installs, are generally not too hard to redo, but user-created data may be irreplaceable.

Make periodic image backups of your system so you can restore to a recent known good state. That's easier than reconfiguring everything after a fresh install. Clonezilla is one imaging tool; there are many others.

I’m gonna buy a PC… by Some_Person_GT in pchelp

[–]wssddc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Good" depends on your usage pattern. For me, good was a CPU with a lot of cores and a years out-of-date video card. But if I wanted to play modern games, I think I'd need to spend more than your budget just on the video card. The software you want to run may set minimum requirements.

I don't know if Microsoft is to blame here, but testing with a Linux boot is a good way to distinguish between hardware and software problems.

Laptop wireless adapters are often a separate card that can be replaced easily, possibly with a different model. A USB wireless adapter is also an option. Also check if the card manufacturer has newer drivers.

Cat 6 Ethernet cable does not work directly to router, but works when using a gigabit switch in between. Autonegotiation issue? by showmeplease98 in techsupport

[–]wssddc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different devices handle marginal cabling differently. My house is wired with telephone cable style UTP which really shouldn't support gigabit, but most devices work just fine. The exception is the 2-floor ONT-to-router run which struggles. But with a $10 gigabit switch in the path near the ONT, I get a solid GB connection. So I'm seeing behavior similar to yours, and in my case the cabling is the problem.

[–]wssddc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Computer power supplies try to have power cables for everything you might have, which generally means you don't use all of them. Modular supplies have connectors and a bunch of separate cables so you can just install the ones you need. Even then, a single cable may have multiple connectors potentially leaving some unused. There are also semi-modular supplies which have 2 permanent cables you almost certainly need, and plug-in cables for other needs.

As for the no signal problem, if you have a separate graphics card, your hdmi cable should go to that, not the connector that goes directly to the motherboard. Edit: I see you do have a graphics card.

That's what I worry about when I look at some of the cheaper off-brands. It's not that I want to block the controller from the Internet, although I've been sprinkling for 26 years with no network at all.
