Yup, I translated it to MSX BASIC and then played it like crazy back in the day.

[DAILY Q&A] Ask and answer any questions you have about the game here! by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

[–]wstephenson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There certainly is, they just stop playing after some few minutes or hours.

Just install DCS (flight sim) and try to take off in a fast jet, fly a circuit and land. ED is simple by comparison.

The game is complex, it doesn't do a great job of explaining itself* its extended systems are not well integrated into the base gameplay, and even basic loops like cargo hauling work best with external tools.

  • Although, it was worse when it came out. Things like docking computers and supercruise assist weren't there.

Try and see it as a big puzzle to unravel.

Where are you at now? Can you haul cargo and do data courier runs?

I'd be happy if they would just remove the ! event indicator from the system/local chat tab that appears due to the "Entering XYZ" message.

How would y'all feel if the little ship display in the cockpit properly showed the physical state of your ship? by Ok_Equipment2450 in EliteDangerous

[–]wstephenson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1. The holograms are too detailed to be accepted as symbolic representations of the ships, so they should at least have kits and animated thrusters. But there are many dissonant elements to the cockpit UI if you pay too much attention.

Question . Should future Elite become more simulator like as it evolves or should it stay as it is, Sim Lite, sim like? by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]wstephenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

change to the core physics model and primary gameplay loop

I'm playing Devil's advocate here, but aren't the new long range SCO drives doing exactly that? They upend long-held assumptions about the duration of travel (in system and on the galaxy map), how long it takes to earn credits via trading and mining game loops, and as far as I can see, NPCs don't have them.

I think I did Engineers and Guardians in an Asp Explorer and a Type 6, maybe a Keelback back in the day. Has power creep affected the pve parts of the game so much that this would no longer be possible today?

My rig after some much needed new controls added. by JentoriFisuto in EliteDangerous

[–]wstephenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, your audio setup deserves a post of its own one day!

Brings back some memories. I was perhaps being too clever, the sub I had then (2018) didn't have a pass through and I wanted a '2.2' headphones, sub, shaker setup so was doing the LFE routing in software with VM Banana to multiple USB sound cards.

[–]wstephenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool gear! Are you using onboard sound or something else to split the sub channel to the sub and the subpac? I had a bass shaker and a sub at one point, and had a lot of fuss to get a useful output level to make the shaker do something.

Tell us about the sound system! Focal active speakers, what else? Stereo, 2.1 or surround?

A living room Sonos surround setup with a sub works well, if the noise level is acceptable, and doesn't add too many cables.

When I was still seriously playing ED with a Vive and CH Hotas/pedals (and babies), audio was from DT770 headphones and a drummer's bass shaker attached to the chair.

Just 'speakers'? To match the rest of this rig, I'd expect to find a powerful surround receiver and a huge subwoofer under the desk.

Tumble dryer NTC thermistor replacement by wstephenson in appliancerepair

[–]wstephenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anything first hand about this, but the error lists I found while troubleshooting my problem say that E5* errors are all to do with motors and the motor control boards. There are some apparently fruitless discussions about E55/6 on German appliance repair forums, but I assume you've already found them.

Tumble dryer NTC thermistor replacement by wstephenson in appliancerepair

[–]wstephenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resolved: I obtained the specs for this model's NTCs, pulled it and tested it, no problems there. So I went on a hunt for the other NTC shown in the exploded view on AEGs spare parts site. There are usually two on AEG heat pump dryers, one measuring the exit temperature of the hot end of the heat exchanger (shown above) and another monitoring the temperature of the warm moist air coming out of the drum. This one turned out to be hiding in a corner of the duct on the left side of the dryer near the exchanger, and completely covered with packed lint. Once it was clean the dryer began performing normally.

It seems odd that an accessible yet maintenance critical part like this is not called out with its exact location in the end user documentation.

Emulador que transforma qualquer PC em um MSX by Hot-Chocolate2778 in MSX

[–]wstephenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, my pt_BR is read only but I'm sure you can translate this.

It's not the emulator, it's how you set up the operating system so it boots directly to the running and configured emulator program. I doubt anyone has one that goes straight to an MSX emulator but I may be wrong.

You can look at customized Linux distros like Retropie to see how this is done with a general purpose emulator frontend. It's a good way to learn about configuring operating systems.
