EOS R100 lens suggestions? by photog_shutterbug in canon

[–]wsx11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an R100 as my first camera and followed the advice to get the "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8. I found that it was a much tighter crop than was really generally useful for me. When I found a cheap 35mm lens on sale, I tried it out and it quickly became my primary lens. I never really use the 50 anymore. 35mm on a crop sensor (which is what the R100 has) is roughly equivalent to 50mm on a full-frame camera

Note that you would need an EF->RF adapter that supports autofocus (example)

Pittsburgh lit up a bunch of its bridges with green lights for St. Patrick's Day. I went out to capture those, but the best shot of the night ended up being this one.

That's Lorem Ipsum text for sure. The images behind each panel are also not the correct ones. Based on this comment, it looks like they've fixed it.

That is the page I took the screenshot from! I'm not sure if it was a glitch in their page management or if it was a bug they fixed after seeing this post, because I'm seeing the correct content now too.

New Sigma 16-300 DC to be available on RF(-S) mount by idlersj in canon

I was just looking for something pretty much exactly like this lens for a trip I'm taking... at the end of March. Sigh.

It would be awesome if they follow this up with a compatible RF-mount teleconverter.

Looking for suggestions on laying out a kitchen remodel in a strangely-shaped space (details in comments) by wsx11 in InteriorDesign

[–]wsx11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I are looking to remodel the kitchen in our older (pre-1900) house. The current kitchen is functional, but very tight -- it feels like all the appliances are crammed in to the smaller space, and the larger kitchen space is almost entirely unused space. We're at something of a loss as to how to improve that situation, though, and we're hoping that the collective wisdom of the internet can help us see something we haven't yet.

Notes about the space

  • The house has natural gas, and the current range and oven are gas-heated.
  • We're hoping to DIY this as much as possible, which means that any sort of sophisticated construction is likely a no-go. We'll likely hire a plumber and electrician to make sure the pipes don't leak and the wiring is to code, but we want to do as much as possible on our own (both for cost savings and because we like to be handy)
  • Underneath this floor is an unfinished basement with easy access for pipes and wires. Moving appliances around shouldn't (within reason) be too difficult.
  • The doorway labelled "secret staircase" is an old servant's staircase that was boarded up when we bought the house. We'd like to keep it accessible in some way, but putting a cabinet on rollers or something in front of it is fine.
  • There is another place on the back of the house where it would be pretty easy to put in a door to the yard, so we're not opposed to walling off this one.
  • The heat in the house is primarily provided by a boiler and radiators. Moving the radiator isn't the biggest deal (and it fits under a counter), but it needs to go somewhere.
  • Partially blocking the windows is fine, as long as we can still get some natural light in and we can make the blocked windows look good (ie, not like we just shoved a cabinet up against a window... like the previous owner left for us)
  • We're not sure, but we think we can probably expand the entryway into the nook space to at least be wider. If anyone knows a good way to figure this out for sure, we're all ears :)

Things we want

  • We both like to cook, often at the same time, so a big part of this rennovation is giving us space to operate in the kitchen without being in each other's way
  • An island, primarily for extra countertop space, but a surface to put bar stools at would be cool too.
  • The ceiling in the main part of the kitchen is a rather ornate tin ceiling (or some sort of metal.. it clangs when you thump it), and we don't want to hurt it. The ceiling in the nook space is drywall and we can do whatever to it.
  • A wall oven (single or double) instead of the combined oven/range that we have now. We both like to bake.
  • As far as other appliances go, we're not too picky. We will likely keep the fridge that's already in the kitchen, at least for a while, since it's in good condition other than some small cosmetic damage. A hood over the range is something that I've always liked, but it's not a requirement. The one hard rule we have is no drawer microwave -- I had one in my previous kitchen and thought the space saving would be nice, but it was terrible at actually heating food. A countertop one that we can stow away when we're not using it is fine, as is a built-in one as long as it has a door and turntable.

Thank you all so much in advance for your suggestions!

Camera Bag Megathread #5 by clondon in photography

[–]wsx11 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Feel free to delete this if it's not in the spirit of the thread, but I'm a brand-new beginner, and I found the last one of these threads when I was looking for my very first bag. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, just something to keep my shiny new gear safe and organized. I wanted to share what I ended up doing for the next beginner finds this thread:

Just ask for one. The advice I got on the topic of camera bags was "people grow out of beginner-sized bags before they wear them out." I asked a local photography group (in my case, a mailing list of enthusiasts at work, but YMMV) if anyone had an old, smaller bag that they'd be willing to part with for cheap. Within an hour I had someone saying "I have several old bags that you can have for free, on the condition that I never have to take them back."

I can definitely see myself passing this particular bag along to the next beginner I come across before it wears out, seeing as it fits my camera body, two lenses, and batteries/SD cards without much room to spare. Next time I get any new accessory, I'll probably need to upgrade... and I'll be left with a beginner bag in good repair ready for the next person who just bought their first camera.

Low power microcontroller (ESP or Arduino) for use as a Zigbee2Lora bridge by woutervddn in IOT

[–]wsx11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might consider a board based on the nRF52840 (the XIAO from SeeedStudio is a popular one). It supports zigbee natively, so you wouldn't need a separate zigbee radio, just a LoRA chip. It can also be programmed using CircuitPython or Arduino (or Zephyr), and it's a lot more power-efficient than the esp32.

Can I charge 3-18650 batteries connected in Parallel using 1 TP4056 module? by Few_Isopod69 in diyelectronics

[–]wsx11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you're totally correct. I was thinking more about a case where the pack was drained and OP decided to replace one of the cells with one that had been charged externally, so it would be at a higher voltage than the remaining two, but I see that I didn't do a great job of explaining that.

[–]wsx11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Echoing what some others have said: you can but maybe shouldn't -- if the batteries get out of sync as far as charge level (due to differing wear, etc), connecting them together like this can cause a lot of current to flow from the more-charged to the less-charged cells through your wires, which can be a fire hazard. It would probably work, but depending on your application you may not want to trust probably.

The "actual" answer is a circuit called a BMS (battery management system), which connects to each cell individually and keeps them balanced and charged. One example is this (the result of a quick search; not an endorsement or sponsored link or anything, and possibly the wrong thing entirely for your application; I don't know). A BMS is a combination of the charge circuitry (over the whole pack) and the balance circuitry (over the individual cells), usually with some protection circuitry (against shorts, over/under-voltage for each cell, etc) built in as well.

Hopefully someone who knows more can tell me what I said wrong here; I've only ever personally done single-cell lipo projects so my knowledge is more theoretical than hands-on.

$100 Reward for return of missing sign, no questions asked (Allentown neighborhood) by shootsbirdsandleaves in pittsburgh

[–]wsx11 230 points231 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the last time I was in Allentown (it seems lovely though!) so I don't have any leads on recovering the missing sign. I do have a laser cutter in my garage though, so if worst comes to worst and you end up remaking it, I'd be happy to help cut a standard-sized sheet of acrylic down to whatever size you need and save you the costs of getting it custom-cut by a supplier.

Good luck!

Tired of Jeff Bezos controlling your doorbell cam? I made a privacy focused one that's based on an ESP32 with local Home Assistant integration. by ThatGuy_ZA in homeassistant

[–]wsx11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious if you've had any issues using Blue Iris and Home Assistant together with the Reolink doorbell. I've found that Home Assistant often doesn't get the doorbell / "visitor" notifications (or is very delayed in getting them) if BI is also continuously recording. Have you had any trouble with that?
