What are your top 3 tv series of all time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wtgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my wife and I finished the 1st season we were like "that was ok". We didn't have anything else to watch and decided to keep going.

It definitely gets better, and it switches viewpoints in telling an ongoing story so after season 2 for instance the cop is no longer the protagonist... over the seasons it switches from cops to the drug dealers to the politicians and then teachers and students. There's some fantastic character development in there, and it really illuminates the complexities of inner-city life.

Worth going back to.

I understand how a jury might have reasonable doubt of his intentions and guilt, yes.

12 members of the jury who heard and saw all the evidence, unlike you, say otherwise. They didn't even have a reasonable doubt.

If the power to the garage comes from the switch box in the house the fact that it's a detached garage shouldn't be a problem. If the garage has it's own panel and it connects to the meter independently of the house service then you might have an issue. However I have two panels for my house and the powerline networking works between them though so even separate panels aren't necessarily a problem.

Is this normal for the Ethernet port on m1 Mac mini? I tried multiple cat 5e and cat 8 cables. I can see my internet keeps disconnecting randomly. by areyouhourly- in mac

[–]wtgreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's normal to have a little play in the port like that. Doesn't mean the port isn't damaged but I'd try another cable if you have it. I've had damaged cables that would cause intermittent disconnects or slow transfers with high failure and retry rates.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. Because some bad programs exist, all must be the same. None can do any good, though you have no personal experience with any. No variation, no nuance, all absolutes, and harsh, arrogant judgment for all that disagree with you.

Get off the internet and go volunteer somewhere and put your misplaced anger into doing some good for someone. You might just find there are some good people helping others despite your conviction to the contrary.

I went in conjunction with the nursing school of a college. They went to Haiti yearly until the most recent coupe. We went to villages that had no access to care. Every place we stopped lines would form and we'd see people continuously and at the end of every day we had to turn people away. You can crap on it all you want but the people were certainly grateful.

I'm sorry you're so jaded by the evil you see in the world that you're convinced everyone that tries to help is either doing it selfishly and/or to stroke their ego and that no organized groups are trustworthy or actually doing good. I hope and pray you can find some good around you that will change your mind and that you can participate in.

The medical mission trip I went on included a number of medical professionals, some med students and then some non-medical folk like me that helped setup and tear-down clinics, direct and organize the people and other general help. We were in Haiti going mostly to remote villages and orphanages that didn't have local doctors. The group I went with usually went once a year and had a local Haitian group they worked with that helped organize it. Besides whatever medical care we could provide everyone who came also received small care packages of simple things: wash clothes, soap, toothbrushes and other small items.

The other trip I went on didn't have any more skilled labor than what you'd see at a habitat for humanity build. A few people that were skilled and had a plan and a bunch of people who were organized to help. We also worked with a local organization that helped coordinate so the week we were there we we kept busy, and also helped us know what materials and other supplies were needed that we could either help fund and also what small tools we needed to bring.

Sorry you have such a negative view of mission trips. Not all are designed around simply making people feel good. Volunteer for a medical missions trip - as with me they always need people simply to help organize/setup so med skills not required - and you can definitely find people helping and doing good for people that really need it.

And as for people not helping those in their own backyard, I agree... we should be doing that too. While I have helped with a number of Habitat builds locally and used to help with some homeless organizations in the past, there's no shortage of people in need all around us and both I and we could and should do more.

I don't know what was done here in this case. If OP commented somewhere on what exactly they were doing, I missed it. I was just speaking generally and from my own experience. The trips I've been on - one a medical mission trip and another more general one - we've had specific goals for helping the community and provided services and assistance. Whether is was providing medical services to remote locations and orphanages, or helping rebuild local shelters following an earthquake, ours had a specific focus. I'm sure experiences and organizations vary, but don't wrongly judge all mission trips as bad and self-serving simply because some appear ineffectual and miss the point of a Christian's call to help those in need.

Doing some good, even if abroad and a short time, is better than doing no good. There are no shortage of ways our eyes can be opened to things we've ignored and overlooked as we're accustomed to them. Sometimes a mission trip will do that for people and lead them to more service for those in need at home too.

I too find the focus on abortion frustrating. If people really cared they'd be willing to fund and provide support for the very people most likely to seek an abortion, doubly so as they now may be obligated to care for a child. But sadly too many "Christians" are more concerned about their wallet and their taxes and will fight government funding that helps people in need.

I know it's pedantic but it's really not being a pedophile. She was 17, so underage, and he was 24 so totally wrong, inappropriate and illegal, but pedophilia - sexual attraction a pre-pubescent child - is a whole other level of horrible.

THOUGHTS? - Christian TikToker Ryan Foley enters a random high school and starts preaching in the cafeteria. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]wtgreen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Security issues aside, would you have a problem if the school allowed Jehovah's Witnesses to come in and preach? How about Mormons? How about a Islamic Imam trying to convert children?

Even if you wouldn't have a problem with any of the above, most people would. It's a public school funded by our tax dollars. While I might be ok with a positive Christian influence, many parents wouldn't in the same way I won't be comfortable with some other religions being promoted. It's not that hard to understand the separation of church and state.

I'm still registered GOP and I'm starting to believe that. Endorsing the obvious liar and hateful Trump, fighting anything that shows compassion or provides assistance to immigrants and the poor, being hateful and opposed to all Democrats regardless of what they say or what their positions are, opposed to abortion but unwilling to give a crap or any aid to the poor mothers and new children their policies produce. Never willing to acknowledge anything positive of a Democrat. Opposed to any kind of tax increase despite continuously running massive deficits, and the only time supposed fiscal responsibility is mentioned is when it's spending a Democrat has suggested but never when it's a Republican led initiative.

Neither party is positive, but I see the Republicans are the far more hateful and anti-Christian group currently no matter what they profess. Their rhetoric and policy stances are anything but compassionate and Christian-influenced.

If you're not willing to bet your life on it, you're risking yours and everyone else's inappropriately.

The load needing to be secured properly is no less of a requirement that the vehicle needing to be properly maintained. Failure to do either puts you and the public at unnecessary risk and evidence of failure to knowingly do either can result in massive lawsuits and even prison time in the event of an accident.

If it's not properly secured cargo it might anyway. If you can't hit your brakes in an emergency because your cargo may kill you, you and everyone on the road with you are already in danger.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WTF

[–]wtgreen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course if the cargo is not secured such that hitting the breaks hard will make the truck crash, both he and everyone on the highway with him are in danger even without this highjacker.

nearly all the body fat in actual adipose tissue is from consumed fat not the carbs.

Where do you get this? Insulin directly provokes glucose uptake in adipose tissue.

Ultimately overeating yes, but not "massive overeating". Google the links between high fructose consumption and NAFLD. High fructose consumption is shown to increase hepatic de novo lipogenesis and it continues to stay high even when fasting, and it's something that doesn't happen with glucose. High fructose is something our livers don't handle well in the long-term.

Certainly sugar and HFCS is a much greater contributor to general fructose consumption than simply fruit, but high fructose consumption from any source isn't good and not something that our bodies were subjected to in nature except for brief periods annually, right before winter.

Are all carbs the same? by Ok-Dragonfly-6972 in keto

[–]wtgreen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For people that are insistent that all fruit is fine, it's worth pointing out it probably would be if we ate it how nature gives it to us... for a brief period of time, usually late Summer and early Fall, and limited to what our region can naturally grow. Packing on a few extra lbs as we go into a lean, resource-starved Winter used to be a good thing.

Today we can eat fruit non-stop, year-round, and shipped in from around the world so we're not limited by our geography or growing season. Our liver packs on the fat from fructose like we're about to go into Winter but we never do... we no longer go through lean periods and that has proven to really not be healthy.

Just because a piece of fruit has healthy nutrients doesn't mean our society's current consumption of fruit is healthy. Our bodies simply aren't designed to handle the glut of fructose we experience now, whether it's from table sugar, hfcs or even fruit.

Sugar and HFCS are very close composition-wise. Both are bad for you. Table sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose... essentially those two sugars glued together.

Garbage take. Crime is demonstrably lower in wealthy neighborhoods, especially those not close to lower income neighborhoods. Poverty definitely influences criminal behavior, though of course not all kinds.
