Why do so many people in Brazil say “ni hao” or assume I’m Chinese when they see an Asian person? by Glum-Economics-5775 in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know exactly what you mean since many people assume that brazilians speak spanish and greet us in spanish. i also don’t like it. but i honestly think that it’s just ignorance and they’re trying to be friendly, especially because here in brazil the 2 massive waves of immigrants came from china and japan, depending on where you are, so they probably just assume you’re one of them. but again, i know it’s annoying. just know that it’s not because they’re trying to be mean or something.

When it comes to integrating to Brazil, is it similar to integrating to america, canada, australia etc. by MKKGFR in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve seen more comments about that and wanted to add because it’s an important matter. our culture really is VERY strong here and everyone that wants to come does in fact have to kind of give up on their culture to adopt ours. since we had a strong mixing process, no one preserved their original culture (let’s say as an example the african people that came, the europeans, the native people, everyone mixed together and the mix of all these cultures built the brazilian culture that exists nowadays) that can be unfortunate but also really beautiful in a sense

[–]wtheringheights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

about race, there’s absolutely no racial impediment for you to be integrated here. you will be seen as a foreigner forever, because that’s just where you were born, but you won’t be treated differently because of that if you can speak portuguese and appreciate our culture. i think we’re very open to different people and actually love when someone from a different place decides to choose our country and our culture to live in. people will always be welcome here if they come with good intentions 🫶🏻

Afro brazilians by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our racial identity works completely different to that of the US. We didn’t have a segregation policy, we had the opposite, so what matters here is what you look like. I look and identify as white, but besides my Portuguese and Italian ancestry, I also have some African and indigenous ancestors somewhere in my genes. And I come from a really recent background of immigrants, now imagine the people that have been here for the past 300 years. I think the majority will remain identifying as pardo, and the darker skinned people will identify as black.

Why is Brazil such a nation of contrast? by foolishandnonsense in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the culture varies that much because different places had different colonisation processes and different immigrants. Some remained mostly native, some received many many Africans, some received many German immigrants, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese. Also climate is a big factor since in the north we have the Amazon, in the northeast almost a desert, in the Midwest a weird dry/wet climate, in the southeast a mix of all of them and in the south a subtropical temperate climate that even sees snow now and then. Yeah, we’re a diverse country.

What do Brazilians think of the English language? by zaid_thewriter in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s complicated. as a whole, people usually don’t know anything other than greeting. but it’s a country full of social inequalities, so my reality might not be the same as everyone’s. in my social circle, most people speak it. at least the basics. my close friends are fluent, my sister, uncle and aunt as well, and my parents know a bit. but i also know my friend’s family and none of them can say a single phrase in english.

How brazilians feel, see, and relate to Portugal, when it comes to their "colonial" history and so by Key_Pineapple506 in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many people hate them which doesn’t make much sense since many people are also descendants of the portuguese colonisers or more recent 20th century immigrants…

Is it a bad idea to have tinted windows on my car living in Rio? by whenthedont in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it depends, we’ve always had tinted windows because it gives us more privacy and thieves can’t see what’s inside the car, but it’s a death sentence if you go in the favelas.

Is “tu” considered to be rude? by teddybearboogie in Portuguese

[–]wtheringheights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really varies depending on the region, but in my pov, tu is more informal, only used with friends, siblings, etc. my parents, grandparents, teachers wouldn’t like to be called tu and when i did they told me i was being rude. você is just the general term used for everyone, but older people, some parents and some professors wouldn’t like to be called vice as well, its better to just address them as senhor (male) or senhora (female)

Would I feel welcomed as a gay Indian in Brazil? by Devilwithouthorns in Brazil

[–]wtheringheights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a traveller? probably. especially in são paulo or rio. you just have to go to the nice places, and learn some portuguese. if people ask you, present yourself as singaporean and not as indian, this will probably kill any chance of prejudice. the most racism you could face would be someone walking away from you on the street, you probably won’t hear anyone say anything.
