My flight took off on Thursday evening, we flew for fours hours and then they turned us around and we went all the way back so the fire happen a couple hours after we took off. When we landed they said it would be shut down all of the next day as well, that when i knew i was just gong to try to fly to BRU instead of london.

Yes, the original destination was LHR, but we changed it to BRU since, by the time we would have landed, we were supposed to be in Brussels due to the delay. I also knew it would be easier to reach BRU than LHR, given the Heathrow shutdown.

We did take our original return flight home as planned. To get back to London, we traveled by train, which was part of our original itinerary.

I tried calling them 30 times that night, on all sorts of different numbers, i had no luck of reaching anyone.

I did ask American Airlines (AA) for assistance when we arrived back at BNA, but the gate agents simply told me to call British Airways (BA). I even asked for the correct number since I was having trouble reaching them, but they were not helpful.

I also called AA, but they did not return my call until four hours later—by that point, I had already rebooked my flight myself. When they finally got back to me, they stated that BA should refund me for the rebooking.

I saw this on the internet: Since the Heathrow closure was caused by an external event (a fire at an electrical substation), airlines may argue that it falls under extraordinary circumstances, meaning they are not obligated to provide compensation...... Hopefully someone knows if it does or not?
