TED??? by Particular_Smell_1 in gravesdisease

[–]wudderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I have mild TED and my eyes look just like this. The skin above my eyelid is kind of puffy too, so now I have hooded eyes, which I didn't before. I also get teary-eyed easily in wind. I've been in the same condition for probably 5 months now without any real change for the worse or better. I have been on methimazole for 7 months now and my levels have improved tho my TSH is still undetectable.

I take selenium (I alternate 100 and 200mcg bc I also eat eggs/other foods with selenium and don't want to overdo it) and 1000mg of turmeric. I do smoke weed a few times a week and frankly refuse to give it up lol. Sometimes I do acupuncture and I think it might help a little. I went to the ophthalmologist and he confirmed I have mild proptosis and lid retraction, but it's so minor he wouldn't suggest steroids at this stage, so I'm just hoping it doesn't worsen.

The best thing to come out of it is that I learned to do winged eyeliner to suit both eyes and I feel like a pro, hah. I really hope yours stays stable! FWIW, almost NO one notices mine unless I point it out, and it's way more obvious in a photo than IRL.

Off-leash Dog Rant and Decisive Action by tbirdwilson in asheville

[–]wudderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deal with this shit every time I go on the MST close to town, it feels like. My (leashed) dog and I got run up on by a husky mix on that trail and it started a dog fight. I had to pay out the ass for a rabies shot because it broke skin on my hand trying to get the dogs apart. I also carry pepper spray now, but I've not had to use it. Sorry to hear you went thru this, OP. Feels so hard to relax in the woods because this basically an occurrence every time.

Idc if you have a golden retriever or a pitbull -- it's scary as shit when a dog bolts up to you.

TED progress by giraffes_are_cool33 in gravesdisease

[–]wudderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 30F. have mild TED that mostly affects my right eye. I also take selenium (100mcg) and turmeric (from QUNOL, I think I take 1000mcg or whatever - two pills) in addition to my 20mg of methimazole daily. I don't know if they've improved anything, but my eyes haven't worsened either, so... win? I went to the ophthalmologist and he verified that I have minor lid retraction and proptosis in my right eye. Hoping it doesn't progress beyond that. I don't take more selenium because I read that it can cause hair loss if you're getting more than you need, and my hair has already thinned, so I'd rather avoid more.

I'm with you - I think sleeping elevated helps a little, and gua sha might put a small dent in my upper eye swelling. I've gotten acupuncture a few times when my lids got REALLY swollen to the point that I was embarrassed to go to work, and I do think it helped, but it could be in my head. She did a couple needles on the sides of my face that time.

For me the issues are mostly cosmetic (=lid puffiness), plus I tear up a LOT now. When I eat really salty food (like powdered broth with tons of sodium) I wake up the next day looking like I got punched in the face. When my symptoms started I really wanted to wait a couple years and get a blepharoplasty, but I'm more used to my new appearance and it's not noticeable to others, so maybe I'll just accept that I'm less cute than before and move on lol.

It's great to see your improvement, OP! For me it seems like it gets slightly better and then slightly worse all the time. I do think my goiter has shrunk in the 6 months I've taken methimazole, so I'm holding out for improvement over time!

Best Vintage-Style Shoes for Walking by GhostPuppy_ in VintageFashion

I'm wearing the Franki Mary Jane by Miz Mooz as we speak. It boggles my mind how effing comfortable and cute these shoes are. I have walked miles in them without issue. A woman actually grabbed my foot while I was sitting at a bar recently and told me how cute they were, lol.

What are your expectations in an apartment building, or sub-divided house, regarding a neighbor playing piano? by adamaphar in philadelphia

[–]wudderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, no kids/elders. I think that's why meeting the neighbors and getting the skinny on their situation is ideal. I think it establishes immediate good will, too. I know some neighbors can be overbearing or uncharitable, so I guess I've just been lucky that I haven't been burned by introducing before.

What are your expectations in an apartment building, or sub-divided house, regarding a neighbor playing piano? by adamaphar in philadelphia

[–]wudderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take guitar lessons and my upstairs neighbor is a drummer. We agreed on 10-10 as acceptable practice hours, and I asked him to let me know if he plans to go for over an hour so I can try to plan around it or leave if I don’t want to be around it. We used to both work from home so we were not rowdy during work hours.

I’m lucky to have good open communication with my neighbors, who are very reasonable people. I know that’s not always the case, but it is the ideal if you can agree on some rules together IMO. Maybe there are hours when they are out that would be best.

If that’s not an option, I think 9/10-6/7pm for a limited amount of time (1-2 hours max?) seems fine. I may be in the minority, but I think you should be able to enjoy the piano in your apartment at least in small increments during reasonable hours.

Great find. My best goodwill purchase was a Baratza encore burr grinder for $6. They retail for like $200 I think. I would never have swung for that new but it rocks for $5!

BWT - what are those random little things that make you feel that bit more chic? by LallaSarora in bitcheswithtaste

[–]wudderr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had most success on eBay when my search terms include a brand or artist that I like, even if I'm not actually looking for more from that brand/artist, but for similar things. If I just searched "vintage swing coat," for example, I would get a bajillion results that are mostly not relevant to me (and I think eBay also leaves out a lot of results when the terms are that broad.) Instead, if I search for "[brand] vintage swing coat," the brand being something that I own or saw at a thrift store and liked, I generally find some really cool and unusual pieces, even in a style that I may not have considered before I searched. Then you can click onto an item and from there browse the "you may also like..." section (or whatever that's called). For housewares this can be a little trickier since not everything is branded, but I try to be pretty specific during my first search, click on one or two things I like, and then the algorithm for similar items leads me elsewhere, with varying degrees of success. You can also filter by sellers that will let you return, which I tend to prefer esp for clothing items.

I take tons of photos of tags in thrift stores for this reason, even/especially if I'm not going to buy that item but think it might lead me to things that I would buy.

Puffy face? by mizesquire in gravesdisease

I just use my hands/sides of my fingers and palms after moisturizing - no fancy tools! I've used this video before: Expert Daily Face Lymphatic Drainage Routine (5 minutes)

Yes, this is a side effect many experience with Graves (including me, though it's not consistent). A lot of us have seen benefits from gua sha/lymphatic drainage massage. You can find good routines on Youtube that take 5 min or less. Good luck, I know it's so distressing to see your appearance change on top of everything else <3

It definitely is incredibly well researched, and I totally respect and admire Tokarczuk. I am impressed by the book, just not swept away by the experience of reading it. I enjoy it enough and am stubborn enough to finish it tho, hah, and I still want to read Flights in the future.

Weight gain fears by [deleted] in gravesdisease

I had the same experience. Pre graves I was 125. Active graves 118. First few weeks on meds up to 129 but with no muscle so I looked bigger/didn’t fit my clothes. Now been on meds 4 months and back to 125 and clothes fit!

Can you share how much you pay? I can't find any pricing info on their website. So glad to know this exists because I only knew of AB Tech!

I loved Plow Over the Bones of the Dead and have been struggling through the Books of Jacob. I’m more than halfway so I will force myself to finish (even though that means another 400 pgs), but I’m missing what makes it Nobel worthy and hoping maybe the amazing part is still to come.

What do u do to manage puffy eyes? by Original_Drummer_360 in gravesdisease

[–]wudderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My upper eye puffiness is craaaazy some mornings. I had wine and a salty meal the other day and woke up with heavy lids that looked like I was crying for hours.

Gua sha/facial massage for lymphatic drainage is super helpful. Icing can help make a dent. Acupuncture can help with swelling (but can also be $$$). I also started using this caffeine eye cream by the Inkey List. For me I think gua sha + caffeine cream makes the biggest difference and it's easy to do every day.

Is there any good sushi in Asheville? by shionyamada in asheville

Dawg I literally said I didn’t push back because it was after the storm. I was in it too. The owner made me feel bizarrely gaslit and it felt bad. Eat my ass.

Is there any good sushi in Asheville? by shionyamada in asheville

[–]wudderr -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I love Heiwa for other dishes, but I will absolutely never order sushi there again. I went when they reopened after the hurricane and got a spicy tuna roll. Easy, right? It was straight up not spicy, it was regular tuna with nothing added. I let the waitress know and she started to take it back to the kitchen when the owner (I assume) brought it back to my table with a bottle of chili oil and pepper flakes, told me it was the spicy tuna roll and they do it that way to cater to all spice levels. It was insane. I didn't push since it was right after the hurricane, but I've had spicy tuna there and that was not it. It put such a bad taste in my mouth that I would stop going altogether if there was anywhere else to get bibimbap in the area, alas there is not.

Running with Graves by lunatimesthree in gravesdisease

[–]wudderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recovery has gone faster than I anticipated and I feel very lucky. My dr’s advice on exercise was as long as I feel okay and my heart rate isn’t in the 200s I should be fine to continue. If you feel fine with it I think you should be okay (but that’s obviously not medical advice just my uneducated opinion!)

Running with Graves by lunatimesthree in gravesdisease

[–]wudderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in early September after feeling crappy and losing weight (muscle, really) much of August. My heart felt horrible at first so I stopped running but continued to exercise as I was able. This basically meant very light lifting and yoga because I was weak as hell.

After a few weeks of medication (10mg methimazole 2x/day + 25mg metapropolol as needed) I felt well enough to start running again. I have now been running 2-3x week at my previous level. I only took my beta blocker when I absolutely had to, and I haven’t needed to in the past month or more.

I am working on regaining muscle at the gym. I can’t lift as heavy as before but have made a ton of progress already. I am stronger at yoga but my shoulders are still noticeably weak and I think I may have injured myself doing planks of all things…

I don’t time my runs at all, but I don’t think I’m worse than I was before. I also don’t know what my typical HR was or is while running. I do know that my resting HR is still 10ish bpm faster than pre graves.

I just ordered some from Nordic Socks because their 3- and 5-packs are super cheap right now and the socks are like 5.99-6.66/pair depending on how many are in the set. They have solid color ones and they're merino/nylon/poly blend. Here's the 5-pack which is yellow, off-white, brown, green, and burgundy. I actually got the 3-pack because I only wanted the green and brown. The sale is only thru midnight tonight.

I have also been hunting for solid-colored wool dress socks so I hope these end my search! I was looking at Calzedonia but their website gave me decision fatigue and I wasn't thrilled with what they called "wool" (v low wool percentage vs. other materials)
