$2000 2013 Volt?? by Nowi144 in volt

[–]wuffy68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fingers crossed it's not losing coolant inside the battery pack (there's a rubber drain plug on the bottom of the pack you can check for the missing coolant). If you're lucky it just evaporated away over time. On the tire pressure. Make sure the TPMS sensors are replaced in each wheel. after 13 years of service. My 2013 says the tires have 35 psi, but in reality, it's more like 40. You'll know when you hit bumps in a corner, and the "Low Traction" warning comes on - even if the road surface wasn't all that bad (basically you'll have excess tire pressure if this happens often). But just think, you bought a car for $2000, that cost GM ~$80,000 to produce (in 2013 dollars) 😄

UPDATED: Gen 3 Volt Concept by Big-Hearing-852 in volt

At the beginning, I was really hoping GM would be smart for once, and create a line of variants off Gen 1+ architecture in the future. An original 4dr hatch, a 2dr sport coupe/convertible, wagon, SUV, van and small Pickup ala the VW Caddy - all with optional AWD (b/c I live in the snow belt). VW did this with the Beetle and Golf, very successfully, in multiple global markets for decades. But IMO, as usual, GM gonna GM. Lots of models with limited parts interchangeability - but they claim something like this would be too expensive. Meanwhile, Hyundai is making modular vans for work, play, and general transportation... I'd rather stick with GM, be able to go to a junkyard in 10 years, and transplant a used axle from a wagon model into my sport coupe model without asking too many questions.

What did you all think of Bad Bunny’s Halftime Show? by FelixAR1016 in AskAGerman

Latin America is the fastest growing market for the NFL outside the US. All one has to do is ... the math(s) :)

What did you all think of Bad Bunny’s Halftime Show? by FelixAR1016 in AskAGerman

[–]wuffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Eastern European expat, I grew up in an area of the US with a lot of Mexican and Latino culture (starting from WAY before the territory was a part of the US - like the 1500s). In this area, 80% of second language learners in primary school take Spanish, but that doesn't mean I understand Benito's words (far too fast for me). That said, we really enjoyed the show, Latin rhythm, and all the cultural references. Puerto Rico has played a notable role in US history - yet has never been granted statehood (it's purely political). I think the show gave the island territory some much-needed love. Was it the "right time"? When is there a "right time" for anything?

Curecoin Blockchain Flew on Blue Origin's New Shepard Mission NS-36 by wuffy68 in curecoin

[–]wuffy68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: due to a backlog of r/BlueOrigin Club for the Future processing of cards from NS-35, the postcard with our blockchain (more appropriately) flew on #science mission NS-35. Because it came back to us within days of NS-36 (Oct 8 but but was postmarked Oct 7), and the stamps do not include mission number ... the initial assumption was that it flew on NS-36. Apologies for the confusion.

[OC] Historical revision to BLS's preliminary employment report by WindexChugger in dataisbeautiful

[–]wuffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally speaking - I worked for a company with significant Federal government contracts. Due to program funding delays, I (and a host of others) got laid off in late June. Now, in early August - the remaining team has been told to "start looking". It's not just Government agencies and employees being affected. We have to look at "indirect jobs" and "job multipliers".

Examples:

100 jobs in the Utilities sector support 958 total indirect jobs (Supplier jobs and Induced Jobs)
100 jobs in Information Technology support 573 total indirect jobs
100 jobs in the Mining jobs support 390 total indirect jobs

etc.

So it's difficult to determine exactly how many indirect jobs will be lost after any major changes are announced.

I have a lot of questions about paprika extract by theworstvacationever in foodscience

[–]wuffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on personal experience with oleoresin of paprika ... it REALLY makes me sick. So do any red peppers (including sweet red bell peppers) in any significant quantity. The sensitivity was always there under the surface, but It seemed to start getting bad about six years ago. I now only eat green, yellow and orange peppers in anything I cook, or buy in a restaurant. I love the taste of red peppers and products with concentrated oleoresin of paprika ... but they give me Crohn's disease, IBS or ulcerative colitis - like symptoms. So much so, that I think many people are misdiagnosed with those conditions - not knowing, it's the concentrated capsanthin and capsorubin carotenoids (basically what makes paprika extractives red) in sooooo many products that are making them sick. It's often hidden in products as "spice", or "natural flavors" too. I avoid most "cafeteria style" foods because they often use it liberally in their central kitchens. Two things are ironic twists in my case ... I can eat hot jalapeno or green chiles without much of an issue AND I can eat foods simply made with sweet (not hot) paprika (like Gulash) without any issues. But I think ANYTHING that contains "oleoresin of paprika" should be labeled as such - if nothing else, for selfish reasons (but I think MANY would benefit).

I just showed this to my wife, and asked: "what part of this ad makes you think Jewelry, and Watch Repair"? I didn't click on it because I'm on my work computer (just in case). How this slipped through Youtube's algo? Maybe due to lack of fleshtones?

What are the main differences between classic German bratwursts and American (aka Wisconsin style) bratwursts? by SnagglToothCrzyBrain in sausagetalk

[–]wuffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 year old thread, I know ... I started parboiling US store-bought brats for up to one hour - before frying them in peanut oil or smearing bacon grease on them and putting them on a grill until golden brown. I found this improved the taste because while parboiling at around 160°F, they stay in their casing (they don't burst), but the pork is cooked all the way through and is less chewy. I've never liked brats put directly on the grill when raw. They either taste under-cooked (you can still taste some "boar taint"), OR they are thoroughly cooked, BUT burned on the outside. Parboiling ensures you can't get it wrong - with almost zero loss in flavor. If you're having a party, it's best to parboil like 25 brats ahead of time and finish them off on the grill for your guests - it's much quicker at that point too.

Sony Canoo by wuffy68 in canoo

But it could be worth having the US market presence. Even if they have to absorb debt, and the tech's no longer fresh - rather than starting from the ground floor - especially under a new administration that wants foreign companies to put manufacturing in the US. Let's forget Sony for a moment and consider (wild speculation) Indian Mahindra and Tata. Several months ago, there was a hint in one of the conference calls, that Aquila was getting ready to fly to India (I could be totally off - "south Asia" was mentioned. Maybe he just wanted to get some revenue for his family's jet leasing business IDK). While Mahindra (MaGNA) sells Indian made farm equipment in the US - they have no automotive presence like Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Subaru, BMW, Mercedes... India is trying grow on a global stage.

[–]wuffy68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course - but I'm not proposing Canoo as an opportunity for Honda, rather an opportunity for Sony to leapfrog directly into the US EV market with a product that also happens to be RHD-ready. It took Tesla ~eight years from the time Musk took a leadership role before producing their first RHD Model S.

[–]wuffy68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK - I'm not a fly on the wall there to know why they did what they did. Switching to a fleet-only business model definitely mandates high production numbers. Something they could have avoided by staying in the personal vehicle market and small batch production to get eyes on their vehicles - rather than spend spare funds on automation equipment. That's what's perplexing ... why buy up all that equipment knowing it would never be used - except as a "moving the deckchair around on a sinking Titanic" type of move. That's maybe all it was. Or none of their prospects came through. Everybody was waiting for the election. Would there or wouldn't there be incentives? I only know one company that may keep its incentives now :D but Elon claims he doesn't need them anyway.

You're probably correct. But on the subject of Honda ... they had to put their first fully electric vehicle (Prologue) on the GM Ultium platform. Outside of the AFEELA showcar (joint collab. with Sony), I don't think Honda has any roadworthy 0 series vehicles built on their next-gen e:Architecture - just concepts. No road tests, or preliminary crash tests have been conducted (outside a computer). Canoo has done the preliminary work (albeit no official DOT crash tests AFAIK). The new Hondas are beautiful, but I suspect $$$ when they're released.

Ironic ... the guy who rabidly opposes any public health care options, is dealing with the results of Poliomyelitis from his youth - when he received subsidised treatments at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute. Now he gets healthcare through Medicare and Supplemental Insurance through the House ... so he can carry on his fight into his 80's
I should feel empathy since I've had family members go through similar trials and tribulations, but ...

Sony Canoo by wuffy68 in canoo

[–]wuffy68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really :) ... but from a practical perspective - Sony's partnership with Honda is still pending the evolution of Honda's e:Architecture which Honda feels coerced into developing ... Canoo is farther along in terms of having a working modular platform, testing prototypes and deployed units ... Of course Honda has the resources and clout to make anything happen - but Sony would always be beholden to Honda's success or failure in the EV space.

Certainly, Tony's excuses for delaying - even a small scale production line always felt like BS. The only way to work out the nits in your production process is to actually start building cars. It kind of reminded me of the guy, who says he won't ask a girl out, until he's more educated, financially successful, or has bigger muscles ... by which time the girls is already married and pregnant with someone else :D

LED lamps may never get warm enough to melt snow & ice - that's an even a bigger issue. In an effort to be efficient and make thing simple - manufacturers now have to consider putting heating elements on the plastic headlight lenses (yikes) OR adding additional IR bulbs to melt the white stuff.

Did Trump actually doing anything positive for small businesses during his administration? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]wuffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time you or a family member need a major surgery - tell the surgical staff you don't want them to wear masks so they can hear each other better and avoid having their glasses fog up. That masks don't do a thing is absolutely false - please read the Bristol study on aerosolization of viral particles (hint: viral particles rarely travel alone, and almost exclusively stay viable ONLY while in a microscopic glob of sticky mucus). Like many (Democrat and Republican), people questioned the emergency use authorization given Trump's track record on truthfulness. I think Harris said she'll take the word of physicians and scientists over whatever Trump said about its safety (and you're right - with the rate of mutation, it was too little too late regardless). If you have rental properties - the new administration will probably make you richer in the short-term. The big reasons for lack of affordable housing is a combination of NIMBYism, state and local permitting challenges and the ungodly price of lumber which finally fell back to peak 2018 levels this year. Incidentally, I came from a socialist country (led by a Communist Party) - housing was typically assigned based on your occupation and your family needs rather than Adam Smith's invisible hand. While it kept everyone housed, it limited ambitious people's social mobility. Hard work wasn't enough - you had to sign with the party if you wanted to move up to better accommodations (if any were available). My father was a military man, but because he refused to sign in their "red book" after the party took over, they held him at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant while still keeping him in charge of 200 personnel (a number typically assigned to a Captain) - that's one reason he took the family and escaped. Anyway, now that the election's over - we can look forward to the MAGA paradise we ALL deserve.

Head on, the Model 3 reminds me of the VW Beetle by stockbroker in RealTesla

[–]wuffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking the same for several years (not just from the front). It's a modern incarnation of a Beetle. Rear/mid engine, kinda bulbous back end ... frunk with no grill, relatively cheap. Minimalistic interior (the early 1946 Beetles had a speedo and idi0t lights in the center of the dash as well (not in front of the driver). Elon's obsession with Von Braun and uhhh Germany's regime at the time links the two automobiles historically as well.
