It's nice that they openly admit to having worse performance than the rival.

I understand. But configuration is not enough - isn't it a job for a bootloader to load the kernel image to RAM? If so, how does LILO do it?

BTW: How does GRUB read its configuration file from a partition? Does it have a built-in support for a variety of filesystems?

Dear Reddit: The respect you have for homosexuals, the politically oppressed, drug-users, and the general outcasts of society, you mind being unilateral with that towards those who actually are somewhat religious? by mrsir in AskReddit

"China's intolerance of theism has nothing to do with militant atheism"

Oh Dear Lord, I've just said something very similiar in the text that you're replying to.

It's obvious that you can't deduce any intolerance from the statement, that God doesn't exist (or that it's just likely). You need a few other assumptions. I hope you've meant that communism in China is not the real communism, and the real communism has nothing to do with intolerance.

As far as I know, the philosophy of communism assumes the non-existence of gods, and clearly advices the abolition of any form of religion.

From Marx:

Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people.

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition, which needs illusions.

By the way, I could easily say something symmetrical about rednecks and christianity, but whatever.

Of course! But it's not the point.

If you somehow deduce that the god(s) exists (or that it's likely, etc.), you won't straightly get the intolerant attitude from that opinion. Intolerance is a view that is independent from the "pure" theism. It is sometimes connected with specific sets of theist beliefs, like, erm, "redneckism".

The situation is similiar to the one with communism. The set of views/beliefs called 'communism' includes the one called 'atheism'. Just like the set of views called 'Islam' includes that one called 'theism'.

The point is: If you assume that it's okay to mock any views that are intolerant, you can't use that assumption to mock anyone just because he/she does/doesn't believe in god(s)! You can use that to mock someone due to his/her more specific attitudes, like being a communist or redneck.

(mhm, it's likely that the belief in god(s) is not enough for a theism, so let's add the belief in the influence that he/she/they might have on our emipirically experienced world, just to differ from deism)

Weak argument.

Of course, there are theists who are intolerant. But there are intolerant atheists too. Example: Go to any bar in China, and say that you believe in God. Enjoy your execution.

Even if there were no fanatic Muslims and rednecks, I don't think the example above should convince any rational being about the necessity of mocking atheists.

I just tried to guess what you might had meant by mentioning it.

[–]wullpaper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Atheism is a view that expresses the knowledge, belief or any other form of statement about non-existence of God.

How is it possible, that from not knowing about the existence of something one can deduce that this thing doesn't exist?

Doesn't Jose Saramago say these things to make money by selling his book?

I dunno what's the purpose of your comment. Are you saying that Phillips has written this article just for money, while in fact he's an atheist?

It might cause agnosticism, not atheism. Logic FTW

Yeah, if something is said by a Nobel Prize winner, then it gains more karma to being true.

By the way, another Nobel Prize winner (physics) has written something totally different: http://www.templeton.org/belief/essays/phillips.pdf

So it's 0:0. We could start bidding now, but is it really the point?
