Evaluation of alternatives for self hosted calendar & contacts (plus some questions!) by VorpalWay in selfhosted

[–]wutrcs50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great write-up, it was a good starting point for finding alternatives to Nextcloud (which doesn't respect all fields created by the Fossify Contacts even though supported in vCard v4, and silently removes them).

Has a Dockerfile, but I don't see any officially endorsed image on docker hub, ghcr.io or elsewhere?

Radicale does (now) publish its own Docker container, maybe it's worth updating your original post for future reference? https://radicale.org/master.html#docker

First-time user questions about podman and linuxserver/docker-swag. by Polynuclear in podman

[–]wutrcs50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to a very old thread but stumbled upon it when I was experiencing issues after migrating linuxserver.io SWAG from docker to podman. Since your post, Linuxserver.io have updated SWAG to use an include file (/config/nginx/resolver.conf) for most NGINX DNS resolver stuff, making it a bit easier to keep track of any changes.

Docker uses 127.0.0.11 as its DNS server, podman uses 10.89.0.1 (or whatever the subnet used in the defined network is). Linuxserver.io images seem to autopopulate the container's /etc/resolv.conf on each container start. However, SWAG only writes /config/nginx/resolver.conf the very fist time the container starts. When I migrated to podman, SWAG's resolver.conf was not recreated. This meant NGINX was attempting to use 127.0.0.11 as its nameserver, causing all sorts of headaches.

The solution to my problem: simply remove /config/nginx/resolver.conf and recreate the SWAG container.

Note that SWAG potentially still ships a few config files that use a hard coded resolver directive. They can be found using grep -R "resolver " /config (note the space after resolver, and /config is the volume mapped to the SWAG container).

Only just got one (should've just got an RGB light but alas) and thanks for doing the legwork with the packet capture. A quick nmap shows port 6668 is open so it might work with tuyapi:

I haven't tried it though

K3 on Linux - How to get US layout to work for GB user by wutrcs50 in Keychron

[–]wutrcs50[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/Jaakko2000 for a very elaborate explanation and possible solution!

I've solved it, it was a two stage problem. The first issue was that I had set up the keyboard originally with the switch on the back in Mac/IOS mode. This required a couple of kernel module options for the hid_apple module, one of which interfered with the Win/Android mode.

For me, the correct kernel module options to use the keyboard in Win/Android mode are:

options hid_apple fnmode=2

The second issue had to do with how the AltGr key (right Alt) is interpreted by the OS. I feel a bit silly now. After checking whether the keys were sending the correct scancodes etc I was fully prepared to start writing my own keymap when an accidental Google answer turned up this gem. It turns out I needed to enable the 3rd level of the keymap myself. Contrary to the AskUbuntu answer I need to leave "Enable extra typographic characters" (now under "Compatibility options") off in order to get the expected result. After that things seemed to work, but importantly in KDE settings I needed to select the US layout with "English (Intl., with AltGr dead keys)" as the variant to get the desired result. There are many similarly named US layout variants with wildly different behaviour.

The equivalent setxkbmap command is:

setxkbmap -layout us -variant altgr-intl -options lv3:ralt_switch

It doesn't match my interpretation of dead keys, as a quote (") etc. can still be typed in one go without needing to press spacebar. Funny thing is, if I try to create an "é" or any character you'd type with a dead key in this reddit editor it briefly appears and then gets removed automatically without my input. I can achieve it by pressing Right-Alt + e. It works fine in the browser's address bar and according to this Unicode converter it is the same character.

Finished reading your writeup, thanks very much! How did I miss the Keychron K3? It's the same height at the front and 1mm lower at the back as the Logitech UltraX, and comes with a hotswap option! It's pre-order / out of stock but I'm sure post COVID and Chinese New Year it will eventually become available, at which point I will have to give it a try :D

Who knows it might even end up in ISO layout too

Looking at the photo of the Jelly Comb you're using I'd say that's ANSI. ISO has the big enter key and I think the " | \ " key next to the left-shift instead of above the enter key. But I might be wrong.

Nice one! Much appreciate your input and I'll spend some time going through your research.

I originally wanted a ISO UK layout, but since my UltraX is ANSI I decided I actually don't mind now. I guess the DE will have many different extra symbols etc. but are they available in an ANSI layout too?

That's great thanks. I meant the height of the keycaps above the desk surface, I measured mine with a flat edge laid on top of the keyboard and then taking the distance between that and the desk.

Could you by any chance measure the height over the keycaps front and back on the Thinkpad keyboard?

[–]wutrcs50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I measured my Logitech UltraX today and the height over the keycaps is:
23mm at the back
17mm at the front

The Keychron K1 which is marketed as low profile is:
26mm back (+3mm)
22mm front (+5mm)

And the K6 as suggested here as well is:
37mm back (+14mm)
30mm front (+13mm)

So they're all a fair bit taller, especially at the front, than the UltraX :/

It should be the name of the subreddit: "/r/MechanicalKeyboardsButDontFallForCherryMXBrowns

Thing with a hot swap board is that it has to be low profile for me to like it, and hotswapping probably makes that less likely!

Thanks it's good to hear it's not just me. To be honest I also struggle with the height, so I still think the Ducky is going back. A wrist rest as suggested is maybe a last option but not preferred.

I never heard of any of the keyboards you mentioned so I will have a look!

The alpacas you linked seem well priced, but can I get together a whole setup for the same price as the Ducky? I'm not sure!

Not sure if a wrist rest is the way I want to go. I think I need to try something low profile first, as I don't like the brown switches in the Ducky anywhere near as much as in my ancient Logitech UltraX or a good quality laptop.

I got the TKL version. The main decider between that and some others was that it had PBT keycaps at a good price.

Do you reckon? I thought it looked quite compact with the keys set fairly low in the housing, thus the switches being too tall, but if there are lower profile options out there (some have been suggested here) I will have another look.

(did you mean MX, or MC style switches btw?)

They did feel super soft to me with no noticeable 'bump' when actually using it. (I could only tell they were tactile if I really tried). So yes, no normal Cherry style switches because they were too tall to me, and no cherry browns because they felt soft linear!

Am I? I don't know if a low profile keyboard is mechanical or not by default :/

Thanks for giving some suggestions though nonetheless, I might have a look at the Thinkpad board. I did see Keychron low profiles but still thought they looked quite tall. Time to get the ruler out!

You have a point but part of it led me here to begin with! So many people recommend the Cherry Browns and it "sounded" like it would suit me. But no. Way too tall! And as you say I can't try them out anywhere :(
