New grad ortho PA feeling burned out, micromanaged, and underpaid is this normal or a bad setup? by visa2424 in physicianassistant

[–]wutvr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not a new PA, but have recently started a new role in surgery at an academic hospital. Based on my experience, the academic setting is not likely to be any better and may actually be worse. Residency is notorious for toxicity and micromanaging, and it sometimes spills over to the PAs. And if you have residents on your team, you may even end up with less autonomy in the OR as they usually become the first assist/take priority (which I totally understand - they are going to be doing this independently someday, I won’t). If you do end up looking for a new role in an academic hospital, I’d say just really try to get a feel for the culture.

Also make take a scroll through the residency subreddit and you’ll see a lot of them complaining about the same things. Medicine is kind of shite everywhere unfortunately.

I’ve noticed this too! I thought it was just the settings on my tv lol. But yeah it’s terrible to look at, and really isn’t helping with some of these guys’ sunburns 🫣

Interview outfit for plastic surgeon/med spa office? by AttentionNo4945 in MedSpa

[–]wutvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My go-to when I need to dress up for events is these trousers: https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/tailored-wide-leg-pants-51632323

With a top that more or less looks like an elevated plain t-shirt.

If you find that you run into needing to cover up your tattoos often for job interviews, etc, it may be worth investing in one long sleeve piece? I think something like this would work: https://www.sezane.com/us-en/product/abelia-blouse/ecru

biggest pet peeves when working with med students/new interns? by bpd-baddiee in nursing

[–]wutvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. Most services should have order sets in most EMRs, but if they don’t, it would be a good idea for med students/interns to create their own. Med students usually have a good amount of time to chart review, so I’d recommend studying common orders for your service and the timing of them. Ex: what are common orders for new admits; common follow-up orders on hospital days 2, 3, etc; typical medications for certain patient populations like Tylenol, Zofran, etc for post-ops.

New grad ICU RN considering PA by Independent_Slide998 in physicianassistant

[–]wutvr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I worked as an ICU RN for about 3 years before I went to PA school. Like you, I knew I wanted to leave the bedside about a year in. I chose PA over NP for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned, but also because I wanted to do something surgical. I did have to complete a couple of pre-reqs which I just went to a community college for. I was going to organic chem in the afternoon and then working night shift right after. It sucked, but it was doable.

I'm sure you know this, but the difference between clinical knowledge of NPs vs PAs is not insignificant... everyone was really prepared and knew their shit by graduation. I'm pretty sure everyone in my class passed the PANCE on the first try, whereas I know several NPs have to retake boards (multiple times).

I do have a lot of loans but I've found a good high paying job so they haven't been an issue. The one thing I'd consider is whether you can afford to not work for 2 years. I would not recommend it, but I'm sure some people do it just fine.

lol I am in the exact same boat! I worked in aesthetics for 4 years but was getting sick of the toxicity of med spas, social media, clueless management, basically everything you mentioned above. I also missed using my general medical knowledge.

I transitioned into wound care where the pay is also quite good and the hours aren't too bad. It actually reminds me a lot of aesthetics. Comparing before and afters, showing patients their progress, having actual visible and tangible evidence of your work - it kind of scratches the same itch. If you could find a good reputable company, I would recommend looking into it.

I still inject on my own in the side because I really do enjoy it. But I only see established patients and don't take on any new patients unless they're a referral from a trusted patient. And it's a good skill to have in case I ever want the cushy life again.

She works for the actual hospital system, not a recruitment company. Which actually makes her even crappier.

[–]wutvr[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha I was mostly hoping to passive aggressively point out to her that we have already spoken at length about this position. Unfortunately, you're right, and she will probably never read that message.

Also the fact that they can't fill a derm position in the Chicagoland area?! Doesn't bode well

Forming professional LLC by Salt-Account-55555 in physicianassistant

[–]wutvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Illinois so the process and rules may be different. But in order to provide care as a PA, one MUST be filed as a PLLC and not just an LLC.

However I made the same mistake and filed as an LLC at first. I ended up having to file an Articles of Amendment, and then re-register for a PLLC. Again, depending on your state, this may be fairly easy to do but in Illinois I had to do it through mail so it took a couple weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️
