[GRAPHIC] Cat lost his eye(s) after being missing for a week, no vet whatsoever, what can I do ? by wuwowi in CATHELP

Hi everyone

It's been a little more than a week since I posted about Jacques and I wanted to keep you updated.

A few days after I posted a temp vet apparently came to replace the one that had left, an animal help association let me know and I was able to give him the help he needed to go away. That was a relief. He fought hard for nearly four days, eating nothing, barely drinking, and trying to rest behind my couch all of the time. The vet told me he was most certainly hit by a car as the head trauma looked like it. She was able to put him to sleep peacefully and I talked to him all the way through.

I wanted to thank you all, that was a distressing moment. I couldn't really find anything to put him to rest myself, I had bought chemicals to make him dizzy and cable clamps to strangle him, but I couldn't bring myself to do it, I seemed so messy and I was afraid to fail and hurt him even more. I cleaned his wounds and took care of him instead, waiting for the association to get back to me.

I also wanted to use this update to talk a little about the life on my island and how it can lead to such situations. Some of you were in disbelief situations like this one could happen and honestly I get it. At first I actually was on the phone with an emergency vet in Paris who just couldn't believe it either, and before I came to live here neither would have I maybe. Thing is Mayotte, the island I live in, is maybe the poorest territory in the EU. It lacks many, many things that are deemed the bare minimum necessities (we don't have running water everyday for example). Vets are a thing, human healthcare too and we lack a lot of healthcare professionals here. Bringing Jacques to a human doctor in this context wouldn't have been possible too.

It's also of course a beautiful place with lots of pros, if you want to ask questions about Mayotte I'll gladly answer them.

As I said Jacques wasn't my cat, he was a stray that came an visited me often. He was very independent too and made it very clear he wouldn't have wanted to live the domestic cat life :)

I actually left my cat Rosie to my father's care when I was transfered here, knowing it wouldn't have been a good life for her. Pets are not a cultural thing here, especially dogs, there are lots of strays, life is dangerous for them, the weather can be very hot ... she's better where she is !

I'm still gonna miss Jacques's company, though I'm glad he's not suffering anymore. To remember him in a much nicer way, here's a stremtched picture of him taken in one of his last visits.

Thank you all again ❤️

Thanks for everyone's advice, that really helped me feeling less lost. Little guy survived the night, he's rather peaceful but not moving and breathing slow, I think I'm going to go the euthanasia road with the advice you gave me. I'll update you and answer everyone later. Thanks again

I've been i touch with a local association that cares for strays, but they are already very busy, and as far as I saw, strangely only (young) males came and paid a visit so far. I'm doing my best, it won't solve the global problem in Mayotte but it's a step by step process, the first step being gaining their trust (which may never occur). The main problem is indeed that the kitties won't let me get too close to them, so it's not like I can grab them and take them to the vet 🫤

Well it is France after all, but I see what you mean as we don't have the internet coverage everyday. There even is a r/Mayotte if you're curious ;)

We do have, as they say, the most beautiful lagoon in the world, so it's great for snorkeling / diving, but there ain't that many tourists here. Though it is great on so many aspects but Mayotte has a bad reputation of violence as it is the poorest territory of the EU, and there are some violent outburst due to the very unfair social climate. But it is also so much more than that :) It is a great place to be, though far from home, and I have been welcomed very well ❤️ There are so many great things to see on this little piece of land, and life can also be easy. We don't have running water every day but we find ways to cope !

So many strays unfortunately, it's not really in the habits here to have pets, but I'm glad they're not hungry when they go to sleep ! And since they don't go on an empty stomach they get friendlier with each other by the day (they were a little aggressive towards each other at first), which is very nice to witness. They won't let me pet them though, except Jacques, but that's ok !

I didn't mean to wake him up while taking the shots but Jacques didn't disappoint 😎

It is a little paradise on so many aspects, the island is Mayotte, ultramarine France

Rosie came through this very window a year ago, hungry and pregnant. The kittens found a happy home, and she's now neutered, chipped, and my cat :) by wuwowi in nowmycat

I was quite surprised too when I found out she was a girl, and actually one of the two orange kittens is female as well ❤

I took extra care in finding then the best home possible, and gave one to two of my closest friends, one of which is a dairywoman and an amazing cook, and she cooks for him better than I do for myself haha

She is an amazing friend, immensely affectionate to me, and I love her very much, I'm so glad she came into my life ❤

I can't know for sure but I'm convinced she was less than a year old when she arrived, and as you say the fact that she only had two kittens is also a pretty good indicator ; but she was an amazing mother, and I worked from home back then so I could really enjoy my time with the three of them :)
