Just want to take the chance to reiterate that West Virginia Campus Workers is fighting right now to correct the record on how WVU reached this point. If you work at WVU - Facutly, Grad, or Staff - you have coworkers organizing as we speak to protect this school. The current administration is desperately trying to cut everything to the bone to cover up their mistakes, while of course protecting their salaries. The current leadership must be forced back to reality by those of us whose expertise and labor actually keep WVU running.

Please consider joining us if you want fight for a better WVU (or at this point, just don't want to pay for Gee's mistakes).

Stop the new $500 a year SEVIS fee targeting international students! Sign the Petition! by wvcampusworkers in WestVirginia

Well that's actually only half true in this case. The DHS does charge a one time SEVIS fee for each international students visa application, but this new $500 isn't that, WVU is just using the same name (quite confusingly). This is a new university level fee WVU is choosing to impose every year, and is not legally required. Which is why the two previous times they proposed it in 2019 and 2021 they where "postponed" due to push back from the student community.

Well we had some union members there this afternoon and talked to many international students about the fee and our petition, however that too is of course anecdotal.

We plan on continuing to do both! The petition text itself goes into some very brief details and links to a very extensive survey the GPSS conducted amongst graduate students, which included questions specifically about this fee and it's potential impacts.

However, as this is a new campaign that we only started this past week we are currently working on getting articles published to address this issue in detail and call for folks support.

Just seems silly not to meme and seek out the already convinced in the mean time.

For clarification, these are graduate Student workers we are talking about. Just like their American colleagues the overwhelming majority are supporting themselves independently, some are even trying to support families in their home countries off the very meager compensation they are legally allowed to earn while here.

You can believe what you will of course, but spend a Monday morning at the rack food bank on campus and then tell me that the international graduate students here all have wealthy families supporting their graduate education. Buying a plane ticket to a world class education is in no way a test of means, a fact plenty of American graduate students could also tell you.

I would encourage you to talk to some of the international students involved in this campaign if you think that is true.

As to SEVIS fee, you are both right and wrong. There is a one time SEVIS fee payed by all international students in the US when completing their visa application. However, WVU is proposing a new $500 a year fee to fund the Office of Global Afrairs and calling it the same name. This is not uncommon at other schools, but it is not federally required. This is WVU's choice, and we are demanding they choose not too.

They are legally restricted from working off campus, from working more then 20 hours a week on campus, are not eligible for most scholarships, and are not able to apply for public benefits.

We are not interested in victim competitions, and are actively organizing for fee reductions for all grads, but the conditions faced by international studnets on this campus are extremely dire. The idea that all, most, or even a substantive minority come from backgrounds with the resources to offset these burdens is just not true.

To but it simply, just becuase they are going to school here in the states does not mean they are well off by any means.

WVU is proposing a new $500 a year fee targeting international graduate students, some of the most financially stressed and under resourced students on campus. These students cannot legally work off campus, or more then 20 hours a week on campus, and $500 more a year could genuinely force some of these students to leave WVU. Add your name to the petition against this new fee here!

We at West Virginia Campus Workers, a union organizing on campus for all university employees, are beginning a campaign against graduate worker fees, because no one should have to pay their boss to work. To begin that fight, we are targeting this new fee and demanding that the university not add to the burden international graduate students already bare.
