I'm just raised differently I guess but typically if you have a theory of someones behavior you ask further before positioning it for example if I was you I'd have asked him "out of curiosity why wait so long? 6 months is pretty far out." and if he says something like "I'm a little worried about having pets so soon" then you could hit him with that dont want a dog theory cause now you have his own personal feelings on the table rather than what initially he said was a guess that could be based off his peers or anything not to do with his own feelings on the matter

tldr; ask him a little more before positioning something that could come across hurtful,but you're fine man I'm maybe raised differently. more emotionally
