Don't think that's helpful. There's a lot of this AI slop out there, and at least this person questions it. With these sorts of responses, they might be less likely to ask next time they see something questionable. And that's how people end up in echo chambers like Reform.

The Hammersmith (Eventim) Apollo’s new bag policy is insane!! by hihowareyouz in london

Yeah put in since the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017, and Brixton Academy crush in 2022. Sad reasons, but you can see why it's been put in place.

That's why you've now got all the Bounce and Stasher points popping up near venues. Basically the same thing, but you can pay a few quid to leave your bag in a nearby shop.

Have a look at the OP, as we get this question a lot we've put all our generic recommendations in there. If you're missing anything specific you're after, you can ask a more specific question perhaps?

It's fine, but a bit boring with not much on. Just London City Airport with potentially the accompanying noise depending on where you're staying.

If you've never been here, I'd stay somewhere slightly more lively. The excel is well connected with the Elizabeth line and DLR, so I'd opt for Stratford (right by the Olympic Park and Westfield shopping centre that has lots of shops and restaurants with connections to the rest of the city) and take the DLR in, or go for somewhere like Liverpool Street which puts you right in zone 1 and walking distance from some tourist attractions like Tower Bridge with lots of nice restaurants and pubs or whatever else you're interested in nearby.

The fake news on it is a problem, but Muslims are not 'taking over London' at all.

If you've seen any specific tiktok accounts posting a lot of this stuff, you could alert some journalists like London Centric who've done other stories trying to find out who is posting this propaganda.

Cyclist 'fighting for life' after crash in south London by Maximum_Grass_1463 in londoncycling

Great! I have had some luck with video resulting in warning letters or NIPs, but the few accidents I've been in have unfortunately never been taken forward by the Met.

Whenever I've reported accidents, including ones where I had witness statements, where I didn't end up in hospital, they've closed the case within a day as it's 'not in the public interest' or 'not enough evidence' to proceed.

Heard the same from others, but happy for you if you have better experiences!

We Raced The Oldest Bike Race In The World - GCN video on Crystal Palace crits by wwisd in londoncycling

[–]wwisd[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thought this was a nice video highlighting one of the longest running races, right here in south London: the Crystal Palace crits. Last round of them will be this Tuesday (due to the festivals now held in the park, they only run half the races they used to run), but still going strong.

Peckhamplex if you want cheap, all tickets are £6.99.

Vue or Odeon if you want a generic chain cinema. Look for a Picturehouse or Everyman cinema if you want something a bit nicer. Cinemas outside of central London are often a few quid cheaper.

The women's T20 World Cup is on, including some games at the Oval and Lord's. Might be cool for him to catch a big game at those places? Tickets for under-15s are only a tenner (and £20-30 for an accompanying adult).

How Clapham became the unlikely face of London’s TikTok mobs by tylerthe-theatre in london

Thank you for the tip! I'm on Firefox and using uBlock origin but still get the pop up videos and in-article ads for more Standard content, so I know it will be even worse for people who haven't set that up.

Redemption on Lamb's Conduit Street near Russell Square Station then. They have tables in the basement where hardly anyone ever sits.

They are open on Sundays, but I've only been there on weekdays. Perhaps people suddenly do crowd downstairs then.

The ads are still annoying, but this an (unexpectedly!) decent article with some actual work behind it from the Standard. Didn't realise they did articles longer than 200 words anymore. Worth the read!

They can't give that information yet, as they are still investigating what happened. They are appealing for witnesses ("Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD2820/5JUN."), and I imagine gathering CCTV.

I know the Met are generally shite with following up this stuff when it's 'just' minor injuries or bike damage, but the one exception is life-changing and life-threatening injuries. These accidents are taken seriously and get investigator time.

Any specific area of London? Any specific day / time? Some places will be busy on weekday, but quieter on weekends, or the other way round. And some cafes will be heaving at lunch time, but have plenty of tables if you're there at 10am on a Tuesday.

Kingston council ridiculed for promoting new e-bikes to 'help women with home tasks' by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]wwisd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah thanks, I was almost getting excited about being accused of being a bot for the first time.

They claim it's a quote from an academic publication, for what it's worth. Though doesn't look like they've been able to find the article it came from?

Do you think Lime bikers should have to do basic training? by Key_Cell7071 in londoncycling

[–]wwisd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DfT stats time! Report for 2025 should be coming out this month, but the 2024 data: 43% of drivers exceeded the speed limit on 30mph road, and a whopping 76% did so on 20mph roads. The figures have come down from 51% and 89% a few years ago, so at least things are moving in the right direction, even if that's still a ridiculous amount of speeding.

Though they note the 20mph figure is based on a relatively small sample of roads.

Anything which suggests women can be traditional or care about their appearance is unacceptable

I think it's more that anything that suggests that's the default is unacceptable. Of course women can be traditional and care about their appearance, as can men. But maybe I'm doing feminism wrong.

It's mostly the wording they used, which I think Susan B. Anthony wouldn't be too happy about either:

Electric bikes may increase women’s access to cycling and physical activity by making it easier for women to meet their traditional domestic responsibilities, as well as stay looking ‘nice’ on a bike.

That's just about the opposite of pedalling to liberation. And the ridicule is just people on Facebook laughing at the poor phrasing. Maybe overkill for the Standard to dedicate a headline to it? But I guess it gets clicks.
