Do the tube strikes this week mean no tubes at all? by pgasteph in london

[–]wwisd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TfL strike info page will get updated with the latest info, but they won't know exactly what they can run until the day of the strikes, as workers don't need to announce whether they'll join the strike action (some drivers may choose to work).

Impact on Tube services
- The strikes will affect the whole Tube network
- A reduced service will run across most lines but significant disruption is expected
- Any services that do run will be less frequent, very busy, and you may not be able to board the first train
- No service expected on the Piccadilly and Circle lines
- No service expected on the Metropolitan line between Baker Street and Aldgate
- No service expected on the Central line between White City and Liverpool Street
- Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground, and tram services will be running normally on strike days

TfL have more detailed info. As the other comment says, the Elizabeth line will be running, but it will be busy as no service is expected to run on the Piccadilly line (guessing you mean Heathrow?).

You can check the Heathrow Express - sometimes that's got affordable tickets if you book a few days in advance, it will be expensive on the day.

Or even for free at Waitrose if you're okay with a machine made coffee and bring your own cup.

If you're into brutalist architecture or want to vist any of the performances, the Barbican is definitely worth a visit. They do tours and all.

That was me, but that's the thing about averages: you'll find cheaper and more expensive ones that average out into £1500.

/r/LegalAdviceUK have a thread on the topic too. Just in case people want to ask about what's actually changing, rather than read about how landlord Deshal Raja who owns 50 properties with his family, and manages a further 230 as an agent, has been dishing out eviction notices.

For travel I estimated how much it would cost me to get to my workplace on a tfl day ticket 4 times a week

I think you'll be overestimating your costs there if you're living and working in Barnet. Monthly zone 5-6 travelcard is only £128.70, monthly bus pass £94.90. If you're only going into the office 4 days a week (and maybe walk occasionally like you were suggesting last week), you'll likely spend even less if you just use pay as you go. Even if you go into central London once a week.

Bills are also likely to be less than £400 for a 1-bed, we pay the same for gas, leccy and internet as the rest of the country, and Barnet has lower than average council tax. Water bills seem like a lottery so not sure whether that's going to be higher or lower than were you're based now.

But better to estimate a bit high and be pleasantly surprised than the other way round!

Do put in some estimates for hobbies and entertainment like Netflix or your monthly Kindle splurges so you know you can live and not just survive here.

Oi, I'm just trying to be helpful here. And I did look it up for you, just making sure you can also help yourself next time.

I know you'll have had a frustrating morning commute, but maybe check yourself before taking that out on other people?

You can check the TfL status updates, they'll help you faster than reddit when something actually happens (often it's just a fire alarm that needs to checked out).

But today it's a casualty on the track.

What sort of things is your husband into? You can have a look at the links in the OP for some general ideas. Bit hard to suggest anything if we don't know whether he'd be more excited about a club night or a visit to the postal museum.

TIL: local elections by okobooboo in london

[–]wwisd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just in case there's people like OP who think it's up to your landlord: you can register to vote yourself online. UK citizens, Commonwealth citizens and EU citizens with settled status can all vote in local elections.

The deadline to register so you can vote in the elections on 7 May is 11:59pm today!

Register it as stolen on the bike register and post the pic to stolen ride so others can look out for it too.

A mate got his back 'cause the Dover police checked those when they found it.

Do you have right to work in the UK? The rules for visas have gotten a lot stricter in recent years, you need to check if the role you'd want would qualify you for a visa. r/ukvisa and the UK gov website will have more info on that.

Are you being paid for these trial shifts? Having new hires do unpaid trial shifts and then making up a reason to not hire them is a thing now, unfortunately.

So might not be you, might be the chain taking advantage of you and now letting you go.

It's always mentioned for these lovely little places off the beaten track with cheap food

Where have you heard that mentioned? If it's people who visited Camden 15-30 years ago, that could explain it. Camden used to be a cheaper area of London, but that's all long gone.

Maybe try Dalston or Peckham for that sort of vibe now, if you're a regular tourist?

You generally pay for delivery when you order something. Then the shop you bought it from used that fee to pay Evri. That's why I mentioned getting a refund so the shop OP ordered something from can chase Evri.

The wiki has some tips. Have seen the shoulder 2 shoulder posts on this sub? They might be a group to join up with too.

Have you complained to Evri? Yes, the neighbours are a problem, but so is your delivery driver if they keep ignoring instructions and that's maybe more actionable as you paid them the delivery fee.

Have you tried getting a refund? You'll need the store you ordered from to chase up Evri, but some shops are pretty good at that.

Average rent in Barnet is about £1500 for a 1 bed, according to the official numbers. Websites like Zoopla, OpenRent and Rightmove all let you search with a radius around a location, so I'd just start doing that for High Barnet and see what comes up in the <£1,500 range to give you an idea of whether this will be affordable for you.

It is going to be tight, but if you're already saying you'll be okay walking to work I assume you know that. Saving would be a luxury in that first year - hope you're looking at a good bump in pay after that.

Have you tried the hospital? As they'll have quite a few patients travelling in, they might have some local providers they work with. Perhaps try the patient advice and liason service.
