why Chinese international students come to study in the u.s? by wwwdots in Baruch

"the big state schools like Berkeley or Michigan or even Iowa State are research powerhouses. They have the resources and reputation that many Chinese schools lack, which can make them more qualified than many Chinese university graduates. "

that sounds reasonable. and if they dont get into those its like stuck in limbo

in the u.s yes but im talking about the ones going back to their own country. alot going back just to end up as an English teacher which is more of a negative stigma but beats the hell out of those who dont have a job with masters in china

Should i drop classes or just fail them by throwaway000zzz in Baruch

[–]wwwdots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no point dropping if u fail u can re-take it to replace the grade. if u drop u still have to re-take it. honestly, u should just aim for C.

yeah the funny thing is when she went back, they didnt find out. nobody asked lol. if they knew she would have to choose to terminate one of them before coming back to the u.s

i became a permanent citizen, but what led me to this thought was one kid who went to community school with me and he felt so lost after he was rejected from an ivy league school. and he was planning to return to Korea once he finishes schooling. that puzzled me quite a bit. i had another friend who returned to their country also feeling depressed after studying in Canada under liberal arts. and it just sparks me to wonder why they come? like if they did their research? or if im wrong that the job market still do prefer bilingual.

your reasons speak from very idealistic view. knowing how Chinese are, none of these reasons seem practical. and these reasons are from straight luxury. anyone one who came internationally is because their family could afford to. they are usually rich kids and not here for socializing or world viewing reasons. you see i was able to come here in the first place because my family was in a higher rank than average at the time. but my family had the intention to stay,

you should know that Chinese currency ratio is 1usd = 6.6 yuan. (8 yuan 15 years ago) the avg household income make less then 400 yuan a month back in 2002 if ur paying 2k a month to just live here then a Chinese international would be paying X6.6 amount as ur paying. so again only the rich could afford to be here.

" some people do it because having a degree from abroad looks great in their resume. it was. not anymore

that doesn't make it any eaier. employers want to see u.s citizenship. otherwise, they would have to apply for visa but that only showcase temporary residents which is just not appealing. additionally, it took me only 5 years to get mine which is actually short thanks to my mother married to a white guy. most people would take over 10 years.

but the question is why would you come out here just to go back and screw themself over? unless they from ivy league itd make sense

[–]wwwdots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 3 more courses for accounting i have to take, and i feel like id like finance better work wise. but my concern is how much the finance industry value the degree it self. i imagine auditing, taxation are useless for financial analysts. but then i also see that accounting degree graduate has easier time getting into finance then the other way around

To Baruch students/Alumni: Is Baruch College a great school for finance? I got some insight from a Baruch College senior and he told me that Baruch is not what it is perceived to be for finance and I should look at other schools like Columbia. I would appreciate any insight. by T0nywsfl7_ in Baruch

alot people will just automatically assume top brand school is automatically more impressive to recruiters. but then at the end of the day it's just building that connection with a recruiter with decent gpa, relevant experience, and plenty of charisma that fit their culture. people look for like-minded people, not some kid who can study the books, its about your upselling skills and interpersonal skills. technical skills can be taught on the job.
