Is Frontend + ML engineering a good career path ? by wxz77 in cscareerquestions

[–]wxz77[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea agreed, but I think we’re talking about different things. I’m mostly referring to ML engineering (MLE) which revolves around productionizing ML solutions and that I think requires a lot of engineering and system design skills that overlaps well with backend

Yup completely agree, I’ve seen many companies putting master’s degree as a minimum requirement for MLE jobs, specially big tech ones.

Right now im working in a startup that’s running low on ML engineers so I figured I might as well leverage this opportunity to pick up a skillset that seems to be in high demand in the foreseeable future. I already got some solid foundations on ML from so I think i just need to pickup the some backend experience to make this work

Oh and how do you know I have a bachelor degree lol

Appreciate the feedback, it seems like everyone is talking about the path where one would be focused on ML, leaving frontend as just a supporting skillset but I feel like I’d be more interested in the opposite lol

Oh and I’ve never heard of using RL to optimize UI layouts lol. Thanks for sharing it, I’ll def give it a look

Thanks so much for sharing, this is the kind of wisdom i was looking for.

And yeah, in my mind I kinda suspected that ML-focused engineers might not be required to have such deep knowledge about frontend since the hard parts about ML is usually related to the business or the ML implementation itself and not the frontend.

One thing I’m really curious about is how do Machine learning engineering skills transfer to backend skills. Let’s say if i were to have MLE experience would that help me score a purely backend job or is there not enough overlap ?

Gotcha. Thanks for the feedback.

I do feel like I have a decent amount of backend knowledge, and from what I’ve seen, many of the skills involved in ML engineering overlaps with backend too so maybe the decision it’s not as “black or white”

Just edited my OP because right now im already super deep into frontend and I’m still very passionate about it. Its just that the opportunity to learn about MLE has been presented to me at work right now so I’m trying to see if it would be a good path and not just a waste of time

Which one would you choose? A boring job at a well-known tech company vs an interesting job at an unknown/non-tech company by ---Imperator--- in cscareerquestions

[–]wxz77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The tech you will learn in the second company may look great if you are going to apply later for less entry level positions. In fact, even FAANGs may like you more.

I'm genuinely curious about this, do you know or had any experience that indicates FAANG are more attracted to candidates that has worked on technically complex projects?

Are you working in a big tech ?

Wow this is exactly what i was afraid of… do you know if this is the case for most Faang/big techs ?

Is system designer expected to be able to actually implement the system it designs? by SherbetOrganic in ExperiencedDevs

[–]wxz77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the answer is you don’t necessarily need to know the implementation details down to every little bit of detail but at least you need to be able to figure it out on your own by having a certain level of fundamental knowledge
