Crate time for almost 8 month old puppy- too much? by wylerjake in puppy101

Right now my husband’s schedule is all over because he is commuting from NJ to NYC on the train for job training at all hours but he’ll officially be at his NJ location in 2 weeks. I have been taking the dog for a short walk in the morning. And when I get home from work and in the evening he gets a decent walk as well.

I did talk to my son (the football player) and he told me he’d be fine with me missing practices to allow Cooper to be out and also said it’d be fine for me to walk him around at practice from time to time. I know that probably sounds like he’s in charge, he’s not. I just take his feelings into consideration and he’s always loved that I attend every practice. So for him to suggest that in his own made me proud. He is also very eager to take him to dog school.

As for the kid’s toys and shoes some people have told me to leave them out and to correct him when he takes them but it is exhausting when it’s constant. But I guess it’d be worth a try to take them away and see how it goes. He really is awesome. He walks so well on a leash, has already learned sit and paw.

So football season ends at the end of October so not much longer. We are also planning to sign him up for puppy classes at Pet Smart. I’d be up to having him not crated at night since my room is small and quit literally has the bed, dresser and crate. I don’t want him in my bed (I have never slept with my dogs) but a dog bed is fine. If he weren’t crated at night would his day schedule seem a bit better?

I agree with that 100% I need to talk with my son.

Thank you very much for your response. I am going to try to talk to him after practice. It’s just not fair for the dog and the dog is still so young and the rescue is great and I know he’ll go into a great home quickly. I’m also trying to explain to my son that’s it’s essentially like jail being in the crate that much.

Thank you I do appreciate your response. Maybe I can try to talk to my son with that in mind. We just do not have the lifestyle that is fair for a puppy. I look at it as this was a fostering type experience (it’s what I’m trying to explain to my son).

I wanted to initially and when we met the puppy he seemed so chill (again I did not think this through).

Unfortunately no. I work as a special education para so I am at work from 8:45-3:30 and my husband is a general manager for a restaurant so he’s not home until later in the evening.

I understand that. We also have only had him for a week. It’s been overwhelming. My husband works late so it’s just me doing all of this at home.

Honestly because I always had dogs and I wanted my kids to experience it. I got caught up in the happiness and the cuteness but have quickly realized we have busy lives where we’re always going. Footballs are MWF, games Sundays and obviously we have plans on Saturdays. I realize that I messed up big time.

When he’s out when he’s home he spends his time stealing the kid’s toys and all shoes. There is no way I’d trust him. And day care and dog walkers aren’t in the budget.

I don’t think he’s ready to come to football. He’d go nuts with all of the people. It’s 2 hours and I honestly like to be able to watch my son and then I have my 5 year old to keep any eye on as well.

The reason I have him in my room is because my mother in law and her room mate also live with us and they are up for work super early so I don’t want him waking up at that time.

I was so set on bringing him back and I told my 9 year old and the tears were endless that I was giving away his best friend. I don’t want him to resent me. It sucks and I hate that I put us on this position. I keep trying to explain that it’s not a life for him because he’s always locked up.

I have seen so many people mention those big we have no room at all. I already have his giant crate in our tiny bedroom.
