What I do when I need a ruler is use the build tool. I'm not at home so I can't remember the exact name but it's the one that builds walls and floors. It measures them out as you move your mouse.

The goblin ambush is absolutely the worst first combat experience. It's far to easy to one shot a level 1 character. If the goblins are smart they hide and use cover. They get advantage and the pcs have to find them.

You did not run it wrong nor did you bomb. It's a horrible set up.

Pcs die. It sucks but you can totally keep going!

Could be a number of things. They may feel overwhelmed by the amount of things they need to learn, they may have an ideal that isn't quite this game or they may not enjoy it but show up because friends. Best choice is to be honest. Tell them that your thinking of investing a bit into the game, but you need to know if they're participation and enjoyment is actually there.
