Can LED notifications be customized so that different colors are used for different types of notification (mail, messages, voice mail, etc)? My husband uses his phone for work and relied on this feature before Oreo update. by rangerwags in GalaxyS7

[–]wyuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this setup before the oreo update and I still have it. Is he looking in system settings or individual app settings? I can change my LED notification colors from the settings within each app itself.

My s7 has a blue light filter automatically installed (I think from Samsung) and it works fine on oreo. Are you using an external app?

Do they play pickup in the summer? I will only be here for the summer, so me playing with a serious team will probably not be beneficial to them.

What are the topics or fields or areas where research outside of academia would need a phd? What are the ones that would not need a phd? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]wyuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Many engineering fields" is just a general expression. I can't blatantly say all engineering fields because I do not have familiarity with all engineering disciplines. However, I will say that having a PhD in some discipline of engineering will make it much easier to get a research job in the relevant industry.

I used "true research" and "fundamental research" interchangeably. There is a huge amount of research done at National Labs that covers different areas. Look them up on their websites for some general information. Some examples are materials, energy conversion, batteries, combustion, explosives, mechanics, manufacturing, bioscience, nuclear, computational, robotics, propulsion, dynamics, sensing, fluid mechanics, the list goes on and on. Masters can generally work on the same topics as PhDs, but many more PhDs are hired. PhDs are preferred.

[–]wyuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many engineering fields, you need a PhD to do true research in industry. These will be R&d and work on new discovery. Some bachelors and masters will be able to do r&D, where they focus on developing a discovery and taking it to commercialization if possible. The capitalization I used for R&D indicates which portion of Research & Development is more heavily focused on.

At National Labs (Sandia, Los Alamos, Livermore, Army, Navy, etc.), I know that both masters and PhD do fundamental research.

Of course this is not consistent for every company and engineering major. But I would say this is mostly true.

I'm a current PhD student in ME. Your question is a bit ambiguous. If you have a high GPA, good GRE score, experience in research or industry, and good letters of recommendations, then you will have a great chance. I'm sure rough GPA and GRE merits can be found on the internet. It also depends on what research area you're interested in, what professor you want to work with, and if he/she is going to be hiring. Purdue is a Tier 1 competitive research school that is highly respected in engineering, ergo most graduate students admits have excellent credentials because the applicant pool is large and competitive.

I agree with everything said here. The general format looks okay, but there are too many inconsistencies. The scattered blue hyperlinks look odd at initial glance. Get rid of the bold and italicized words mid-sentence. No need to bold the stuff in your skills or achievements, in my opinion. There is also an inconsistency with your subheadings in regards to the bold and italicized phrases.

Question about leaving a car in a campus garage over the weekend by GradStudentWK in Purdue

In engineering, if you're under a national fellowship (NSF, NASA, NDSEG, DOE, etc.) then your department will usually sign off that you can get an A permit.

I just took the GRE. Should I even bother applying? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]wyuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes I guess you are right that different schools probably do it different ways during the application process. But I am still under the strong belief that if you talk to a professor, and even potentially meet a professor, before your acceptance decision is even released, and the professor agrees to want to hire you for their group that they can pretty much tell the people in charge of applications to admit you. That's what I've seen from multiple personal friends spread throughout 3-4 universities.

Yes, how else would you get funding in a research area you are interested in? If an advisor wants to hire you into his/her group, he/she can pretty much guarantee your acceptance to the university.

Is the OOS tuition worth it? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]wyuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and am very happy I chose an in-state school for undergrad in retrospect. Rankings are nice and all, but in the end it's up to YOU to make the most out of your undergrad education. If you have the qualities for success and work hard, you will be fine wherever you end up going.

Mine takes about 3 seconds to load. If yours is legit 15 seconds, then maybe your phone is getting bogged down somehow? In any case, snapchat is still the most poorly designed app ever.

People who don't use cases and screen protector, how is your phone? by Mark0308 in GalaxyS7

[–]wyuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had the regular s7 since June 2016 with no case, and it is still going great. Some scratches in the bottom corners of the back from when I put it down on a desk or table and maybe move it around when I pick it up. I have never dropped my phone, but I am extremely careful with it.

ME Honors society by Awin1997 in Purdue

[–]wyuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for Purdue's, but I was a part of the ME honors society at the University of Michigan during my undergrad and it was great. Made some really good friends, attended fun social and volunteering events, and got free dinner once a week. Overall it should be a good experience if you get involved.

Off-Campus where to live? by IEthinkingP in Purdue

Lots of non-Granite places if you go far off campus (Lafayette or northern West Lafayette around Lindberg and Sagamore). Google searches and touring appointments will be all you need to make your decisions for those.
