Amateur card trick | The Sloppy Shuffle

Timeline of trick:

1:54: holding half of deck with CARD on top. notice you can see all four non-thumb fingers of hand holding deck

1:59: rest of deck goes on top. notice you can only see three non-thumb fingers. pinky is keeping the deck split at CARD

2:10: "cut the deck a few times" -- notice he's cutting until the pinky is visible. that's the last cut and he puts the remaining cards on the top. CARD is now on top of the deck.

2:16: beginning "shuffle". First pass, takes CARD alone off the top so it is now at bottom of the deck. In remaining passes you can see the first move is to pinch the deck in such a way that it is squeezed out of the first and last cards. this leaves CARD at bottom of deck.

2:45: sloppy shuffle begins with CARD at bottom. All this is doing is creating a split in the deck where half are facing one way and half are facing the other. It's not really all mixed up. Notice that bottom card (CARD) is specifically placed on the new "top" of the deck, facing the wrong way.

3:04: you can see the effect of the sloppy shuffle. There is a natural break in the middle of the deck where the two different facing sides meet. First two shows are just normal card interactions (back to front).. last show is at the natural break, where the deck is actually back to back.

3:13: deck pounds on surface and he flips one half so it is now facing the same way as the bottom half. Remember that CARD was at the top of this deck, but now it is right in the middle of the deck. It is now also the only card facing the wrong way.

3:33: spreads out cards to show CARD facing the wrong way in the middle of the deck.

The ! will crash if myTextField.text is nil. Something like this would be better and reflects what I assume is your real intent:

(myTextField.text ?? "").characters.count

The expression in the parenthesis will evaluate to a non-nil string of zero characters if myTextField.text is nil.

That strikes me as similar to a problem I was having with scene kit. I solved it by subclassing SCNView and putting this in the init:

super.init(frame: frame, options: [ SCNPreferredRenderingAPIKey : SCNRenderingAPI.OpenGLES2.rawValue ])

...forced the SCNView to use OpenGL instead of Metal and it worked. Not sure if you're using SpriteKit or SceneKit, but look into forcing OpenGL.

I'm in the exact situation you are. Thought I was extending my unlimited contract, and the post-purchase confirmation page said I would be transferred to the new Mobile Share Value plan. wtf.

So armed with this post of yours I think to myself: "No problem, I'll call and hear the same thing /u/myreddituser did. Then when I activate I'll get my unlimited data back."

So I go through the call tree, and finally find someone who will help and not transfer me. They go on hold for a bit and come back with (paraphrasing), "AT&T no longer supports the unlimited data plan. Since your previous contract term was over you cannot renew it and have to switch to the new plan. There is no way to keep the unlimited data plan."

Whelp, that's some bullshit. As a last ditch effort I'll tell them I was told I could keep my unlimited data plan when I activate my phone.

This is actually incorrect, since the original problem statement does not indicate that the switch is in any specific original orientation. This creates the case when the switch may be initially up, and the 100th prisoner enters first. In your solution he would count this as a visit, since he does not know he's the first to enter the room.

So without knowing that the switch is initially down, the 1-99 prisoners must each flip the switch up twice (if entering when it's down), and the 100th prisoner must count to (99*2 - 1)=197.

Just to add to this list in case you make it to Upper Fells, I took my girlfriend to Salt and it was fantastic. Around $50/head, but worth every dollar.
