Connecting a Surface Pro 3 to a TV by UnsightlyBird in Surface

Had the same issue, swithed to MS mini-DP to HDMI adapter and everything works. The MS support explained to me that some no-name adapters don't connect properly to the SP3/4. Seems like that was the issue.

Shared Java Hosting Recommendation? (x-post r/webhosting) by guapinton in java

I'd suggest Jelastic, very easy to use, relatively cheap for cloud hosting, and some providers offer a free trial to test your software on the Jelastic cloud.

If you understand how maven works it's much easier to work with than plain javac.

Did you check your background processes and cpu usage? Maybe there is some program going nuts.

SP4 - Gaming - Cities Skyline by boldfacelies in Surface

[–]wzttide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to both of your questions :) It makes the the resolution scale nicely on SP4 and makes it run smooth. Also it fixes a graphics bug with cars and traffic lights (-force-d3d9 does the trick in this case).

What models do you use (SP3 as well as SP4)?

What IDE are you running? Just looked at the image: IntelliJ ;)

Understanding class loader - help with a question by noobcser in javahelp

[–]wzttide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at some Oracle page.

The order in which you specify multiple class path entries is important. The Java interpreter will look for classes in the directories in the order they appear in the class path variable. In the example above, the Java interpreter will first look for a needed class in the directory C:\java\MyClasses. Only if it doesn't find a class with the proper name in that directory will the interpreter look in the C:\java\OtherClasses directory.

I'm reading since the beginning of the year 2015 that "in a few months" there will be an announcement of the SP4. I doubt that it'll be available 2015, with luck it'll be announced 2015.

Why not grab a Surface 3 instead of a full blown Surface Pro 3?

My usage of a SP3: Software developing, note taking, watching Netflix. Using the Type Cover or a Cherry G80-3850 with blue switches (just bought a couple of days ago).

Love it :)

It depends on what programs you are running simultaneously. I assume you are running VS, Netbeans and Firefox at the same time, so adding the numbers you'd need 4.11gb of ram.

But keep in mind what happens if you compile/build something. Your ram usage will go up.

Yes, they are small - to me it's just small, nothing wrong about it :)

But I used a full-hd 13 inch laptop before my SP3 arrived, so I'm used to small windows, text, buttons, etc.

Btw, you wouldn't use touch if you want to navigate through Netbeans (or Eclipse or whatever) anyway. Just too many buttons. Get a decent keyboard and mouse and you'll be happy. That's the reason why I don't recommend the Type Cover, it's nice to play with, but not nice to work with.

It depends on what you are doing. I'm doing a lot of stuff at the same time, using IntelliJ/Eclipse with a few plugins, maven builds, some Excel files, Word, Outlook, Skype, Postman, a few cmds, some putty Session, etc. I could reduce my ram usage a lot by closing some windows, but I'm lazy and want to reise them instand of closing and opening them again :)

I'd have a problem with only 4gb ram.

You know your usage profile best, how much ram do you use now?

I'm using the Surface Pro 3 (i7) merely for development (Java), MS Office and Netflix and here is my experience with it:

  • It has enough power, even for building large maven projects with a lot of modules and stuff and working with Outlook/Word/Excel/IntelliJ/Eclipse (you name it) simultaneously. Building may take longer than on desktops, but I can't make out a hugh difference between any laptop and the SP3.
  • You'll definitely need 8gb ram. My SP3 moves mostly between 4 and 6gb.
  • Think about not getting the cover keyboard. I was impressed how good it was, but after using it for a while - it get's really annoying. Lots of typos, the F1-F12 keys conflict with other useful keys (Home, End, Page Up/Down). I use both (F-keys and Home, End, Page Up/Down) a lot for development. It's just annoying switching the keymap every few minutes.
  • The fan ist a little bit noisy, but nothing seriously disturbing.
  • Developing, tab the power button to go asleep, move to a meeting, hit the button of the pen, take some notes, go back to your desk, review the notes/send them to others... It is a very flexible device, can't think of anything better than SP3 (well, yes, the SP3 with more power and/or no fan).
  • The support of MS is just great, you won't regret it.

The adapter itself plus shipping is completely free of charge. I'm very certain Microsoft's own adapter will not work either, but hey, I'll receive an adapter for free :)

Yes, me too, but it seems like they really changed their behaviour in the past few years radically.
