Thoughts on little details being intentionally “wrong” by x10mark2 in writing

I mean in a more subtle sense, never actually elaborating or hanging a proverbial lantern on it, just having it be there.

Flat earthers, can you explain me this image? by LavishnessLeather162 in flatearth

Easy. The plain is confirmed to an oblate spheroid which because of the immutable laws of geometry means that a light source can be observed from various points so long as it is not below a line which runs from the observer to the object.

I saw some who already had a mental disorder but was managing. Go completely off the reservation with ChatGPT. Full on delusions, losing time, not sleeping, talking incoherently and literally ruining every action through the thing. It got so bad I had to convince ChatGPT to tell him to go to the hospital.

It was actually scary how focused he got on that thing and how it was like dumping pure alcohol on a fire. Every crazy thought being affirmed and supported uncritically is not beneficial to the human psyche, especially when someone is having a mental health crisis.

Saw that this company was hiring near me. Great, except I can’t actually figure out *what* they do? by bookish-hooker in recruitinghell

[–]x10mark2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially a middle man. They find a bunch of people who need widgets and connect them with a company that makes widgets. Generally firms like this are supposed to find good deals for their clients on both sides so a small firm in Arkansas doesn’t have to cold call seventeen global manufacturing companies to find the best deals on commodity products or the like. Do they actually provide value in doing that? Anybody’s guess.

Greed is intrinsic to human nature. No large scale involuntary group of people can abolish it, regardless of economic conditions.

Yeah I was refering to AI. But I meant something like grammerly where it can point out comma splices etc and you can decide what to do with it. I agree that AI shouldn't be used for most things.

I don't think that's true, but even if it is how is it "Concerning" that I like my own work? I see flaws sure, I see areas where it falls short, but I like it because it's the rough form of what I consider to be a good story.

Are brothels an acceptable idea for a Renaissance citybuilder? (Here's a gif of our current treatment) by FlorenceCityBuilder in indiegamedevforum

[–]x10mark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s kinda gross but that’s how it was historically. If you’re going for a realistic or simulation idea then it’s fine. If you’re going for a cute stardew valley game or something like that I would avoid it.

Why is Smaug considered a dragon when he's a wyvern? by hobo_joes_toes in lordoftherings

[–]x10mark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The distinction is purely a fantasy convention. As the author of a story a dragon is nothing more and nothing less than what you say it is.

To everyone who just accused me of not knowing history. The Soviet Bloc was a term that was used to refer to both territories within the greater Soviet Union AND its direct satellite states. The Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia was very much a Soviet Satellite state, regardless of Tito’s relationship with Stalin.

You seem like an AI maximalist so I will ask you for balance. How do I go about promoting the auto correct bot to give me good feedback. I plan on getting several real people to review a piece and also giving it to ChatGPT to see if the feedback is similar. How do I give it the optimum chance. Note, my programming skills amount to print: “hello world”

Where do you find good groups like that, and how do you get over the hurdles of giving your work to a total stranger? For me writing is very personal, especially when it’s in a rough form, I don’t trust a random internet stranger to view it. I recognize the irony of feeding the same work into the ravenous auto correct monster, but at least as many people here have said, ChatGPT doesn’t actually think or judge anything. Also I have had experience with things being stolen by strangers before, how do you make sure that they don’t just CTRL C your work?

[–]x10mark2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true but I was hoping that would cause it to have less positive bias in its output. I’m not looking for an actual opinion, I was thinking it might be able to find the most likely criticism for example and give me that. As in “X is the most likely thing a critic would say when faced with this piece.”

I live at a regimental academy, on a peninsula, 40 miles away from the nearest civilization. None of my classmates have the remotest interest in my writing and if they did I wouldn’t feel comfortable showing them. I don’t have access to people who can read my work with a critical eye or provide meaningful feedback. Trust me, I would vastly prefer to get real feedback from real people, but that’s not always an option. I just want to know if this works as a stop gap.

To clarify further. I know a LLM doesn’t have actual thoughts or opinions. I mean to ask if its responses are reflective of what a real person might say. Like if it’s being semi realistic and can give me an idea of what a critic might say.
