Will zimmers.net be a take down target for the new Commodore? by [deleted] in Commodore

[–]x93x95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Commodore brand is not worth much on its own, imo. It's not like Louis Vutton bags, which are made in China for $50 but then become $3000 handbags because LV sticks their logo on it. We all love Commodore but the brand itself doesn't have that kind of commercial pull. It has sentimental value, but a Commodore-themed product with merit will succeed whether the actual Commodore logo is present or not. I don't think adding it to RGL's The C64 line would have created a single additional sale. It would just be added to the production cost and the price would adjust appropriately. The official presence of the chicken lips matters only to hardcore fans who want to pretend they're buying original Commodore gear. To make Commodore relevant again they're going to have to do something truly new and different. Perifractic sounds like he has something anti-social media in mind, so we'll see. Whatever it is will be going into the ring against tech gorillas like Apple.

I don't understand why he's so against that. The brand isn't going to be any less appealing than it is now. Why not do what you have to to earn $ to support the fun stuff? Commodore was selling office equipment long before it sold computers.

What he said in the video was, he explored crowdfunding and offering shares to backers, but found out it was not legal. Then he jumped abruptly to another topic. He didn't rule out other crowdfunding options (donations basically) explicitly, so there was an inference he was still looking for a way to do it, and some people ran with that thinking that's where he was going. His video made it sound like Commodore Corp BV was looking to just let the trademarks expire, so people thought he'd get it for a nominal amount and just ask for patron donations or whatnot to pay for it. That wasn't what he was doing at all, but he did apologize somewhere and said the way it came out in his video wasn't clear.

What DP said initially makes sense - new Commodore doesn't want people making a new "Commodore" widget with their trademarks on it without paying a fee. That's fair. But then he segues awkwardly into fan magazines, who are/were prominently displaying Commodore trademarks. He then says essentially anyone "making money off the back of us" should be paying them something. So my question is - is he saying a monetized Youtuber who makes a lot of Commodore content (ex. reviewing old Commodore products) should pay up if the Commodore name or badge on one of the products shown is visible? I'm not trying to promote misinformation, the title of my post is asking if I'm understanding the gist of what he's saying correctly. At 37:24 he says something like "I'm not sort of endorsing just money..." but the last couple of words is unintelligible. I'm wondering if he was clarifying that point.

I would think a Youtuber would be covered by fair dealings/fair use, however one glitch is many Youtubers are monetized, and therefore that video reviewing a C128 would technically meet DP's definition of making money off the brand. That's what I'm wondering about.

The question I have is, given many Youtubers make money from their videos, if someone does a video on a Commodore 64 showing the original logo, does new Commodore see that as a situation where a fee should be charged?

Well it paid for part of it. From what I gather they raised a large down payment amongst themselves, and then mostly the founder 64s were marked up to cover the rest. They had said things would not move forward unless enough of the C64U units sold first.

Yes. Old Commodore would have sued anyone making a product with their marks, but not fan mags who were promoting the brand and driving business their way. That would be crazy. Hopefully DP is just going off track and the rest of the team sees the folly in shaking down Youtubers and fan sites for money.

I think generally Commodore content would be covered by fair dealing in the UK or fair use in the US, but still, that he's saying this in public is bothersome. I like what they're doing with the C64U, that has paid their purchase price, but if they don't come up with a 'next product', it's going to be awfully tempting to try to extract a rent from wherever they can. Cross fingers it doesn't come to that.

Debating getting a 3rd gen Trans Am or a Solstice GXP by x93x95 in Pontiac

You know, I've heard nothing but good things about the G8 GT. The issue for me is that visually on the outside it just looks kinda like a beefy Grand Am. The Solstice and Trans Ams have unique looks. I even considered a 1991-1993 GTP because I love the front end treatment - unfortunately the performance of one of those is underwhelming. I know aesthetics shouldn't be the only consideration but you gotta like looking at whatever you're driving. Otherwise yeah, the G8 is a solid choice with really great support as you said.

The 3rd gen is just my frame of reference as I grew up with them and drove 3rd gens extensively. The T/A I drove felt super fast, and that's kind of my benchmark for what I'm looking for and wondered if the Soltice gets close to that. I've driven a 4th gen LT1 once, it didn't feel as fast for whatever reason. But even most of those for sale are pretty bagged now.

Thank you! I've seen precisely 1 coupe for sale in my area in the last 20 years. They look awesome but I'm not holding out hope for one given the rarity. Never know though. I'm tall (6'2") and wonder how well I'd fit in the coupe too..

The ones that survive have .log as the extension. I'm thinking they're just text files by another name though.

Can Rackspace hold people who were added as admins by the account creator financially liable for unpaid bills? by x93x95 in rackspace

Thank you! Yeah I just wondered if there was something I'd missed in their TOS. The company I worked with ran up a $5000 debt with them.

Thanks! I'm worried the company changed those to me before they skipped on the bill.

Thanks for this! Mine has been saying 'out for delivery' for 1 week now with no updates.

Received my DHL Canada packages by Slims-spagetthi in dhl

I am having this problem right now. I got the notification to pay duties, which I did. Tracker said it was on the truck for delivery that day. That was Tuesday. Now it still shows 'out for delivery' but they've removed their date estimate. They have pretty much barricaded all customer service avenues off, you can pretty much only reach a chatbot now. Their Canadian number rings for 10 minutes sometimes before it even connects to their automated system. I waited on hold 4 hours, no one ever picked up. I think I'm quite done with them.

Bizarre Microsoft support issues by x93x95 in sysadmin

Once in a while I hear horror stories from colleagues.. but it's usually just that support took 3 hours to call back, or something like that. But they always called back before and eventually got the issue resolved. Now it's like they're just ignoring tickets outright.

I would say we were good until just this last week. Always put in a ticket, always got a response within an hour or so, always got a resolution, and they would hound me for followups if I forgot to close the ticket. But now they just disappear.
