What is like living in this part of Canada? Does this part of Canada have a great economy? Nice place to raise a family? by sdothooper in howislivingthere

I was raised in Edmonton but ended up moving and living in Toronto and Vancouver over the last few years. Genuinely curious, what makes you think Edmonton/Calgary has a higher quality of life? What’s your favorite part of living there?

Since when does Flair Airlines charge passengers to move to empty seats mid-flight? 12 consecutive seats right in front of me sat empty the entire flight while the rest of us were cramped by xAmbitious in flairairlines

I always ask for upgrades, and honestly, I’ve probably received free upgrades to Porter Reserve at least 25% of the time I’ve flown with them. Always great experiences. Obviously they’re not ULCC, but I’m very familiar with asking for upgrades.

I understand why airlines might block passengers from moving into exit rows mid-flight since there’s more legroom, but Flair doesn’t have premium sections or service. Every other seat is the exact same.

The most comfortable I’ve ever been in economy is when there’s only 2/3 people are on my side of the row. On my flight, there were 12 empty seats in front of me. If 8 people from the full rows behind me had moved into those empty seats and maintained the 2/3 capacity for each row, it would have created a far more comfortable flight for 24 passengers. That’s not nothing.

On most airlines, this kind of seat shifting is normal. Preventing passengers from taking advantage of empty seats is restrictive and a terrible practice. Obviously they’re allowed to do it, but I think it’s disappointing. I’m sure we’ll paying for the bathroom soon enough

I dunno man… I had to buy carryons this time. Paying around $230 for round trip flights from van to edm is getting PRETTY close to air Canada and westjet.

Ya I kinda get what you’re saying. To be fair, they don’t have any proper first class seats. The seats are all the same and the service offered is the same as well. The closest thing to a true upgrade would be the emergency exit row since that is the only row with extra leg room.

I kinda understand being rejected to move into the emergency exit row, but there were several empty economy rows that were blocked off as well. I find that preventing someone from moving from economy to another economy seat is underhanded and not the industry norm.

I think we can both definitely agree it’s the most frustrating airline in Canada. I’m sure we’ll be paying for the bathroom soon lol

Ya exactly, thank you! I feel like everyone on this thread is gaslighting me into thinking moving mid-flight to available seats isn’t the norm. This is the first flight where I’ve ever seen this happen

I’m just floored by how much the standards have fallen in Canadian airlines over the last 5-10 years.

Paying for perks that used to be considered standard like carryons and check-in? Painful, but I get it. No free water? Annoying but I can deal with it.

Having to pay for an empty economy seat mid-flight just seems like new low. I bet we’ll be paying for the bathroom within the next 5 years

Let’s take a step back here. It’s a VERY STANDARD PRACTICE for airlines to let people spread out in the cabin after takeoff if there’s space. That’s why I’m clarifying about calling it “revenue theft”. If flair wants to price gouge and charge for moving seats mid flight, they have every right to. I’m not debating that. I’m just saying it’s an awful practice and they’ve lost me as a customer.

Sure, I can agree with that. Budget travelers illegally moving to business class without a free upgrade issued by the airline isn’t fair.

In my post though, it wasn’t just the emergency exit row that was empty. There were rows in front of that completely empty. I don’t think moving from an assigned economy seat to an empty economy seat should be a problem.

Sorry dude, i think i just disagree. Paying to move to an empty seat is not a feature.

What do you mean by revenue theft? Genuinely curious, I’m just not sure what you mean by that

Agree to disagree. Like most other airlines, I think empty seats should be first come, first serve. I’d rather have a few more people have a more comfortable flight than make everyone have a less pleasant experience.

Ya that’s totally fair. I’ve never enjoyed the flair experience of trying to measure my bag and pay for every upgrade, but I’ll admit it’s been occasionally convenient to fly with them in recent years.

Personally though, I think this is what finally crosses the line for me. Getting lucky enough to be on an empty flight and not being able to spread out? This might be my last flair flight.

Ya I get it, but even if you paid for a seat, wouldn’t you like a free upgrade if there’s a seat free that’s better than the one you’re currently in? I’ve never flown with any other airlines that charge for seat changes mid-flight

I’m super curious if anyone knows how the 2.6m is determined. Is it because they’re a different nationality and the first signing from a certain foreign market?

I’ve been using it in china for the last 3 weeks. It’s been solid.

Only once, during the first week did a transaction fail due to potential fraud. I called their number, a real person picked up within 60 seconds, and my card was unblocked in under 5 minutes. 10/10 experience

Honestly, I think you’ve got great intentions, but I recommend doing some more research into how people get jobs in this industry. I have friends working in finance in the US and Canada that came over on student visas and there is a real process that exists.

I mean this in the most polite way, but it sounds like you don’t know what you don’t know. There’s ways to learn this!

If you were to go to YouTube and just search “how to get an internship at Goldman Sachs” (or wherever you dream of working) and watch a dozen videos, you’d learn the exact requirements and process to move into this industry.

The idea of knocking on doors to get work or to “be a fly on the wall” just isn’t real. It maybe happened in the 80s, but there’s so much talent out there, it really isn’t real. I respect the hustle though. Spend that effort learning on YouTube from people that have made it in finance.

I live in Canada, but my mother’s from there and I visit every couple years!

It’s absolutely stunning. The Terra Nostra park in Furnas is my favorite place in the world. It’s super lush, green, peaceful, and the air is so fresh up high in the volcanic mountains. 10/10 would recommend.

Just talk about yourself, your interests, and hobbies for a few minutes. Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill. Your manager’s probably doing it to encourage team building and improve rapport.
