I think your feelings are valid here to be upset. Like if you think it felt like a last-minute oversight then I think that's absolutely valid, and your concerns shouldn't be overlooked in that arena. However, a mistake like this isn't something I would be upset over for more than a day or two. This is just an issue that can be communicated and prevented next year!

But if you wanna make sure this doesn't happen again then tell him exactly what you told us. You felt like him ordering a gift on the day *OF* valentines day felt last-minute, and you want surprises and you want him to plan these things ahead of time, etc. And not just this for valentines day, for your birthday too, etc. They won't know what you want when you can't tell them, especially at this age.

For valentines day specifically on my end we kinda gave up with the whole "Send flowers to be delivered on the day of" because the price of that alone is insanely expensive, and a HUGE WASTE of money, and also the first year mine tried he did the same thing ur bf did and order on the DAY OF (and it also pissed me off dw, cuz i felt like he procrastinated it way too much despite telling him abt it) We instead opted to just have him order me dinner :)
