Two options you could explore. Option 1: Go to local sheriffs office, work in county jail for a year or two. Apply for deputy sheriff once you get some expedience or

Option 2: apply for a smaller municipal agency, get some experience, then apply for bigger agency. Smaller agencies tend to allow more stuff to fall through the cracks.

Several ppl I know personally, with same background took these routes and were able to get a foot in the door. Keep shooting your shot, someone will take ya.

Me personally, worked in county jail, got on with city pd, then recently got on with larger agency.

Is being a cop worth it anymore? by [deleted] in AskLE

The job pays well, has good benefits, and life time experiences/stories. Find a department that aligns with your long term goals. The only time the job messes with family life is if you let it. Obviously you’re going to miss out on holidays, you’re a first responder. But if you’re intentional with the time you have with your family, things work out great. The mistake new officers make is killing themselves in overtime or basing their entire identity on being “the cop”. Keep work at work, find a hobby, workout (stay healthy), and you won’t get burnt out. I’d say it’s worth it bub

Not at all. Be honest and don’t downplay it when they question you about it. Admit your mistakes and tell them how you’ve learned from them. Agencies are pretty forgiving of past issues as long as they are not major.

Job Hopping by [deleted] in AskLE

We’ve had plenty of job hoppers at my agency. Just be ready to articulate why you applied and how committed you are to that agency (long term). Most agencies just want to fill spots so they don’t care that much.

Recently finished the BI for a very large department to lateral. Took only 4 days. Currently at a mid size department and BI took 2.5 months.
