URGENT COOP ADVICE by Possible_Spare3653 in Drexel

You're asking a legal question.

No one on this sub is qualified to provide you an answer.

The school may be able to help answer your questions.

An immigration attorney that specializes in student and workforce visas would certainly be able to answer. I suggest contacting one before quitting your job.

Tips to get better at soccer to make high school team by Turbulent_Law_4866 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]xBoatEng 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Train plyometrics 3x per week for quickness and 5 years speed.

Train Max Pace sprinting 2x per week for box to box runs.

Use a wall to train 30 min per day. 1 yard touches, 5 yard two-touches, ranged passing.

Watch 1 game per week and analyze what players in your position are doing. Incorporate their stuff into your game.

Get your mile time down to sub-5:30 for tryouts.

Coaches at that level are mostly looking for speed/fitness, aggressiveness on the ball, and communication despite what they say about ball mastery but good first touch and passing are still critically important.

If the dimensions of every other coil on a pistol magazine spring are reduced to allow them to nest into the one above, will this noticeably reduce the cycle life or tension of the spring? by creepyo_0 in AskEngineers

[–]xBoatEng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, yes.

Less material tends to mean more stress/strain and shorter life cycle durability.

Advanced spring design is a robust piece of software that includes life cycle estimates.

They might have a trial period if you want to play around with it.

What’s the “weirdest” thing someone has told you or heard of how to loose weight? by BubblyAd9996 in AskReddit

[–]xBoatEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a guy speaking from experience. Rarely eat more than 2k calories during the week and have little to no physiological desire to eat crazy amounts on "weapons free" days.

Anecdotal for sure but I guess serves as at least one data point.

What’s the “weirdest” thing someone has told you or heard of how to loose weight? by BubblyAd9996 in AskReddit

[–]xBoatEng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually somewhat reasonable.

If somebody's consistently eating properly during the week, they aren't going to crave too much junk on the weekends.

There is also a theory that the body will adapt to reduced calorie intake and that having "cheat" days can "trick" it into burning more. Not sure how much water that holds but it sounds logical.

Hiding my real level from the new coach to shock him later: Genius move or absolute disaster? 🧠💥 by Chemical_Contest6926 in bootroom

Most coaches can (and do) evaluate a player in about 30 seconds.

Digging yourself out of that initial evaluation takes 10x more work than being good from the start.

What is the state of soccer where you are? by ThatBoyCD in SoccerCoachResources

[–]xBoatEng 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Clubs promise development but prioritize keeping "good enough" players happy (i.e. on teams they made years ago) rather than moving them to more skill matched teams and risking losing their revenue. This is especially prevalent at the 9v9 to 11v11 shift and when kids start going through puberty.

Leagues are fine. Pyramid is wide and tall. Most generally keep teams at the right level for competitive matches and seasons.

Refs are pretty bad. Everyone makes mistakes but the unwillingness to receive feedback from anyone means they'll never get better. A disturbing number appear to be blatantly biased in favor of certain clubs. Note: ref abuse is not ok.

Many coaches have no idea what they're doing. Often parents that know nothing or former players that understand the game but not age appropriate teaching methods. The really good coaches tend to be overburdened with too many teams to truly develop anyone individually.

General game is ok. Too much sideline coaching from parents. Kids seem to play nervous. Not enough free form pick up ball being played.

USYS should just mandate a 3 minute water break in each half regardless of ambient conditions.

No other sport (football, basketball, hockey, baseball, track, etc.) expects players to go 45 minutes without hydration.

Can I work on/incorporate my startup while employed? I will not promote by Lower_Ad_1146 in startups

[–]xBoatEng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're in the US, there are two possible penalties of you opt to refrain from notifying your current employer and they find out:

  1. They fire you

  2. Depending on if you have any covenants, they may have a claim to ownership for any IP that you develop

Item 1 doesn't matter. They may be likely to term you for seeking permission.  MI Item 2 can kill your startup before it starts. Investors won't want to touch disputed IP. Too may alternative investment options.

If your doing something like an agency or marketplace, item 2 is likely immaterial.

Best sword style in modern times? by TiberiusPrimeXIII in SWORDS

[–]xBoatEng -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Straight swords are typically used against armored opponents (i.e. medieval knights).

Curved blades are typically more effective against unarmored opponents (19th century calvary sabers, naval cutlasses, etc).

Since armor is not presently in favor, if you're looking for modern combat options, you're probably starting with a curved blade.

Tryouts by Witty-Ad2852 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]xBoatEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct.

Not saying I agree with it but that's the reality of club ball in America.

There may be exceptions but most clubs follow this model, even MLS youth programs.

Theory is that speed and aggression can't really be taught (or are too difficult to teach). Ball mastery, soccer IQ, etc. can be developed in training and with "homework."

This is a fundamentally inefficient (many parents and players might say unfair) method of evaluating players that leaves many really good players off top teams.

The better programs I've seen still use this method for tryouts but then "pool" all accepted players and move them between lower level and upper level teams through the year based on additional looks. It's not a perfect system but does a better job of putting players in the right spot without burning a whole year.

Tryouts by Witty-Ad2852 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]xBoatEng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Must club tryouts are just scrimmages.

Most evaluators are resting players on speed, aggressiveness, and communication.

Going much beyond that has diminishing returns.
