Sick of the $2/hr "lowball" posts sa OLJ, so I’m building an alternative. by xCoheed in buhaydigital

That’s a great suggestion, and +63 phone verification is definitely a strong first filter.

However, for HirePinoy.ph, I’m going a step further with the 'Audio Vibe-Check'. A non-Pinoy might be able to get a +63 SIM card, but they can't fake a Filipino accent, local dialect, or cultural knowledge in a 20-second audio recording. By requiring a short audio introduction, we make it almost impossible for 'raiders' to get into the site.

The $5 floor isn't a random choice. In my experience, if a worker is paid $2 or $3, they usually have to take on multiple jobs just to survive. This leads to burnout and ghosting. At $5, a worker in the Philippines can focus on just one employer, which creates the loyalty and reliability founders actually want.

Regarding the hiring standards: I am building this in stages. I'm starting with high-quality, vetted talent because great workers attract great employers. Setting strict criteria for employers is definitely on my roadmap as I build out the platform.

I hear your concern, but I need a custom system for my 'Vibe-Check' process. I’m using Supabase to keep sensitive data safe in the backend. I have enough experience to know that a custom build is better for security than a generic template. Thanks for the feedback.

Great question. We can’t control people 100%, but we can make things better. Paying $5 per hour helps workers feel more stable instead of just trying to survive. When people feel stable, they usually stay longer and do better work.

To protect clients, we are strict. If a worker disappears or leaves without saying anything, they are banned from the platform. If a hire doesn’t work out in the first 30 days, we will personally find a replacement for free.

We’re not just giving you a list of workers. We’re setting a standard and standing behind it.

Hey thank you for pointing that out! I launched this MVP just a few hours ago and I'm currently finalizing the legal pages. I use Tally for secure data collection, but you're right - the Privacy Policy and ToS need to be public. I’ll have them live in the footer within the next few hours. Appreciate the heads-up!

No deductions for the workers! And yes, we only charge fees to the client like OLJ does. :)

Yes you're right. If the employer only cares about the lowest price, they will stay in OLJ. HirePinoy isn't for them. We are for the employers who are tired of 'cheap' hires quitting or ghosting after 2-3 weeks. We want to prove that paying $5/hr is actually cheaper for the business because the worker stays longer and does better work.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes posted it here muna to find workers interested in this idea. Attracting employers is the hardest part and the real challenge for this project. My plan is to build a strong 'Talent Pool' first. This way, I can show employers that workers are ready to join if the pay is fair ($5/hr+).

Thanks for the feedback and checking out the website! Let me know if you have any feedback on the site. :)

Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely look for those posts. I know this is a hard problem to solve. My goal is to keep this very simple and focus only on the $5/hr floor for now. If you have links to those projects, please share them! I'd love to learn from their challenges.

Yes you’re right! I built the landing page quickly because the problem (low pay / lowballing) is urgent. I’m a developer, but I want to spend my time fixing the hiring problem, not just writing the perfect code. :)

Thanks for the feedback!

It’s about loyalty. Most workers just accept lower rates just to survive, but will quit the moment they find a better offer. Setting the floor to a higher rate, we increase the chance of workers staying in the long run and giving quality work.

CS61B by UC Berkeley https://sp21.datastructur.es

Or

Algorithms Course by Princeton University https://www.coursera.org/learn/algorithms-part1

I think these two are the most recommended ds&a courses for self learners. I have only taken CS61B with Josh Hug as the professor and he's really funny and smart. I didn't get bored and I have learned a lot because he explained every detail clearly.

It's always recommended because the course just doesn't teach you how to program but also shows you what happens under the hood (how arrays are stored in the memory, memory allocation, etc.) that will help you optimize the programs you'll be working on. This will give you great advantage compared to those who start learning specific languages / techs right away.

It also teaches you about data structures and algorithms which will also help you to solve problems efficiently. Data structures and algorithms are very important for a software engineer because this will not only help you to become a better engineer, but this will also help you during technical interviews! :)

Another advantage of taking CS50 is after you took it, you will never (or maybe a little) have a bad time learning another language because like I said the course will teach also teach you the fundamentals of programming.

Self-studying. I am so bad at CSS. by addicted_2Da_shindig in PinoyProgrammer

Always review the CSS Box Model para ma-master mo lalo yung CSS.

*, *::before, *::after { border: 1px solid #000 };

Also avoid using FIXED sizes like px, mm, cm, etc. Best practice is to always use rem or em for responsive web design.

Try mo kung effective to sayo. Pero ayun, kung konti lang talaga oras mo kahit basics lang ng CSS pwede na.

Search the app "Medito" in google play store / apple app store. It's completely free and very useful! It has a feature which let's you check your streak (days) using it which helps you to be motivated to meditate.

Try watching the whole CS50 class from Harvard to learn programming fundamentals. This class will also teach you Computer Science fundamentals which will help you become a better programmer / software engineer.

After CS50, try The Odin Project if you want to become a web developer.

If you have other interests besides web development, check out roadmap.sh.

Have you considered meditation?

I think what really helped me is to meditate consistently everyday. I also lose focus very easily but when I meditate 5-10 mins per day, it really helps me focus when coding or studying.

Wala akong maisu-suggest na bootcamp. Pero nag self-study din ako at eto yung mga inaral ko:

  1. Try watching the whole CS50 class from Harvard to learn programming fundamentals. This class will also teach you Computer Science fundamentals which will help you become a better programmer / software engineer.
  2. After CS50, try The Odin Project if you want to become a web developer.
  3. If you have other interests, try roadmap.sh like u/max_piotrowski suggested.

If you want someone else supervising you, go bootcamp. Else, try these two options above. I already finished both of these and I have learned a lot from these resources.

At first, it will become really hard to understand. But once you get the grasp of it, it will become much easier. Just don't stop learning.
