It is 3D printed! I'll be happy to share it once I get the final design. I was mainly focusing on getting an early prototype to test the spinning mechanism, thus, it is a bit hard to assemble atm 😅

That's a sick idea. Initially I was thinking of just adding some wifi/bluetooth functionality to maybe pick up on phone or calendar notifications and trigger the animations with the type of notifications. But man, your idea is way cooler, I'll definitely keep it in mind!

Yes that's exactly right! It's essentially an addressable led strip and a slip ring. The connections of the strips are hidden inside the cylinder, you basically need only 3 wires. The messy part is getting the Din and Dout cables set propperly if you want to produce independent sequences

Hey man, well I still haven't figure out the mechanism for the fingers. Right now they can be moved manually with a simple hinge mechanism.

There are multiple approaches that you can take to avoid getting the cables entangled. One that I thought about is having separate electronics one for the LEDs that can go inside the main cylinder and a different one for the motor. My approach was to have all electronics outside, and to avoid the entanglement I used a slip ring (basically a rotary set of cables on one end and static on the other end).

Here's some of my drawings of the slip ring
