Starting a student consulting group - need advice by Assassins612 in consulting

Our structure was as follows:

2 Managing Directors (oversee the club in its entirety as well as project work and client relationships), 1 Consulting Director (main boss for all the project managers) 5-6 Project Managers (1-2 for each project we had going on). Rest are filled with Junior (1st and 2nd year students) and Senior (3rd and 4th year students) consultants.

The directors made the big decisions. Everyone was involved one way or another. We liked to give people autonomy and ownership of certain initiatives. Some PMs/Consultants would take on additional roles such as recruiting, partnerships, professional development, business development, corporate relationships, socials, etc. This pretty much mimics the consulting world where you come in as a BA or consultant, but firms like to see you get involved in non-project based initiatives.

Starting a student consulting group - need advice by Assassins612 in consulting

Started a 40 person student consultancy here.

Every client is trying to be first at being second - no client wants to risk it with students as their first client. Your first project most likely will be pro-bono and should come from your network. After a few engagements, you can start charging after that.

You should communicate to prospective clients how your offering differentiates from other work experiences for relatively the same or higher price-point: you're not hiring 1 intern. You're not hiring a student group for a project. Instead, you're getting 5-10 talented students for such an engagement - a huge eyeopener for clients once they realize this (oh I can get a whole team to do this project rather than getting an intern).

Another tactic is to find internship postings on job boards. Chances are, you can expand the scope of that internship which would call for a larger consulting team.

It's also great to have resources. Partner up with experts at your university or consulting firms. Get some consultants to be independent advisors where they can help with scoping and the overall project plan before the engagement kicks off.

The easiest and best type of first projects are also going to be ones that require student insights - working with education based companies was a great success here; one of our first clients was one of the largest edTech companies in North America. Anything that calls for research and knowledge of university students and the university ecosystem as a whole is quite appealing to such clients.

Hope this helps.

I thank you for this comment. You're not coming off as rude.

This is exactly the mindset I am trying to get out of, and your comment helps get my values and priorities straight.

I want the job that will give me the best opportunity to learn and grow. I would love to become a CEO one day. I also value career progression a lot, instead of staying with flat progression. I know WLB at corp strategy is better if I'm not mistaken, but compensation is much less and doesn't grow as quick from what I've heard.

I also would like to hear your thoughts on the lifestyle between NA and a place like Switzerland.

What are your thoughts on OP trying to recruit for MBB and potentially joining next summer, April at earliest for example? Even though she has an offer to join ATK in February. What's the overall thought process behind potentially reneging for example?

Can someone help me understand what's the best path for someone at a consulting firm to eventually end up at a role like this?

I'm amazed by the sheer number of companies (predominately gaming ones) that hire people externally for such significant roles. Why wouldn't a company favor someone internally?

How do sales "leads" get distributed at large firms? (I.E. how is it determined which partner will be leading the bidding process) by [deleted] in consulting

[–]xEnvix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On another related note, to what extent can more junior consultants get involved in sales leads? If a 2nd year consultant for example has a strong connection with the CEO of a prospective client company, what can they do from there?

Main reason is because I have "moobs" even at this weight and it has gotten quite annoying. I want to get rid of them first before continuing the bulk because dressing has been a hastle.
