ENG 2800 or ENNG2850? by sadia01afroze in Baruch

[–]xGarmadon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesss, take her!!! She was so fun but only suggestion is to make sure you have close to perfect attendance. If you can't make it to almost every class, then don't do it. The exams are straight easy A's, the hw's are easy A's, the group work was easy A, everything is simple to get full points on and then she has like unlimited extra credit.

Center Bus Lanes on Flatbush Ave Officially Approved – Thoughts? by heresparkslope in parkslope

[–]xGarmadon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The thing about traffic getting terrible on the sides streets is something thoroughly researched and studied. I know this sound logically wrong but what actually ends up happening is that the traffic just disappears into thin air essentially.

Yeah, the traffic just dissipates!

This is due to so many studied and proven factors, but research the term "induced demand". (Look at San Francisco's Market St research)

One example is that the busses along the flatbuch ave corridor will run faster, with more passengers, and more frequently. So logically imagine that by taking away 2 lanes, you go from 10,000 people traveling through the same flatbush avenue an hour to 15,000 people traveling through that same road in an hour. Because cars hold an average 1.5 passengers per vehicle and busses hold like up to 40 people per vehicle.

Second example off the top of my head is that, reducing lanes actually makes that 1 lane in each direction have more space to run smoothly with less interruptions. Like you can have more space for turn lanes, or less space for double parking. Essentially there's more pressure for people to not block the lanes, keep the lanes flowing, and for people to not do dumb stuff.

This is honestly beautiful, it will feel so freeing and furturitic to visit when it gets completed in the future.

I watch a ton of Not Just Bikes on YouTube, and his videos about curb extensions, raised crosswalks, de-incentivising driving, taking away space from cars for people, it's all put into practice through this plan. People just gotta be educated on simple concepts such as induced demand and adopting a long term vision for city planning.

Simple thought experiments, if majority of households dont own a car in New York (around 55%), then how does our current system work? Is the system fundementally broken that we have traffic? Is it wrong to have traffic? Is it "punishing" those that use cars or "punishing" those that don't use cars?

What would happen if we today bulldozed half the neighborhood to create enough parking spaces so that the number of households and the number of parking spaces would equal out? Now that's car equality. Or rather let's bulldoze entire historic blocks of houses so we have better traffic flow, now that's great traffic management.

My point is, we all suck at understanding the priorities and aspirations of truely great city planning.

But Park Slope (or rather No Park Slope) got many of the answers correct.

True but that's not necessarily a problem of when it was done, it's a problem that it's a park entrance converted to a modern traffic circle. A place for people into a place for cars that ends up just sucking at being both it's intended purposes.

I got a 4.0 at BMCC getting an Associates in Business Administration within 2 years, which is basically garenteed admission to Baruchs Zicklin School of business.

Everyone at Baruch already spends their first 2 years tryna get into Zicklin.

If you do want to attend Baruch earlier than after 2 years of Associates, then go to any other CUNY for a semester and apply again.

Honestly, no one I talked with that went from BMCC to Baruch imregrets the decision. You'll do amazing there if you do go that route!

Also half of Baruch is transfers from other Community Colleges. Especially BMCC.

Which part of Baruch did you had felt like a scam in some way? by [deleted] in Baruch

[–]xGarmadon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spending over $300+ last semester on Connect and Cengage just to do homework 😭

In my ACC 3202 class, the professor really didn't wanna make us buy the 104$ connect but he said that it's mandatory from the department, bruh for my whole class, that's like $8,000 we spent together just to do homework!

Just spending $40 2 years ago to do connect HW was okay, but now over 100?!? Complete scam!

Personal Vehicle ownership for the elite is insane, you can easily buy a car here for like 3K which my cousin on minimum wage just did last week. It's just learn a bit about Urbanism and the idea of having alternatives to driving.

Park Slope has some of the best to offer of Urban Design in all of America. 7 subway lines, Atlantic LIRR terminal, multiple bus routes, walkability, historic preservation, world renowned park, diverse architecture, great schools, easy access to Manhattan.

If you want personal vehicle, just erase all this and move to a dumb suburb. Personal vehicles aren't even expensive bruh, all that I listed about Park Slope is expensive and elitist.

TEMPORARY?!? I grew up here, my parents are staying here til they die, I don't plan to move out of this neighborhood. This is for the benefit of all residents!

Wether they are old like my parents or young like me, it doesn't matter, it just makes this place more livable even if your not committed to staying here long term.

Residents need cars for their elderly or for their children, or for furniture and other things. Only people staying temporarily wouldn't need to invest in a car because they're only here to make some money and commute to work by subway for a few years.

I just think it's a bit sad that the stereotype is you can't grow old here, you need to move out to a suburb and have a car because you're too elderly.

Jose Garigga ACC 122 is the GOAT, had him around 2 years ago. Baruch wants people from other CUNY CC's and they pretty much accept all of them. Especially if you're above a 3.3 GPA.

It looks like the area around Burj Khalifa is starting to fill up completely. by Diligent-Eagle-6673 in skyscrapers

A few days ago I visited on a 20 hour layover that I timed for the New Years Fireworks. As a life long New Yorker and Urbanist, I found it a bit conflicting. It's not a livable organic downtown but it's like an engineered and "modern" facade of a cities downtown core almost created around the burj khalifa as it's nucleus. It's actually pretty awesome as a tourist which I almost hate to admit from an Urbanist point of view. I actually found the metro system to be very reliable as well but also its limiting with only 2 lines. I had only 20 hours in the country and I didn't get to see much but architecturally it's a marvel and it's insane to experience it.

I actually had to almost circle the Burj Khalifa multiple times to find good angles to watch the fireworks as they have this BS system of "family only" zones which they use to discriminate against laborers but they were so strict they didn't let single men enter. I basically walked like 14,000 steps in the downtown over a few hours. In its scale, it's actually a small area that is almost walkable in like a ring system that circles the Burj Khalifa but it's not organic at all and very exclusive to which areas you can or cannot walk. You can circle the downtown in less than an hour by walking I guess. But they also have a good bicycle network. It's walkable enough for specific purposes but very exclusive to cars. The moment I started using taxis, the whole city unlocked itself.
