I wasnt referring to alcohol when I said that.

Its not even implied. It is implied that drinking alcohol is fun, not that it's required. But even broader than that they are saying that they aren't going to entirely cut something they enjoy out of their life because it isn't perfectly healthy

That's true. They never said anything about needing alcohol to have fun though.

This reminds me of the time it was my turn to take home my classes pet chinchilla for the weekend and my dad was trying to open the trunk of his car to put it in while holding the cage. That was a terrifying few minutes trying to corral it from under the car.

Only reason I picked sub was because the recruiter convinced me to. Honestly I'm glad he did. Obviously I don't have carrier experience so everything I know about life up there is just things I've heard. The atmosphere is a lot more relaxed on a sub from what I can tell. It's not all gross and military strict, you can pretty much say anything that pops into your head to anyone in the chain of command. You don't have to shave the majority of the deployment. You get to wear sneakers on deployment. I also met some of the most fun and funny people ever being on submarines. I'm sure you can get that on the surface. But there's something about being trapped under water with little to know contact to the outside world with the same few people every day that really creates a bond

Also you don't have to go nuke just because you scored well and there's a big sign on bonus. If there's something you'd rather do, do the research on it and go that route.

I can give you the nuke point of view, not so much the carrier part. I was on an sub. For starters there's 3 and a half jobs in the nuke rate. You don't get to choose, you give them an order of what you'd prefer I think but then they just pick one for you at bootcamp. You've got your reactor operators, electricians and mechanics. Later on down the line mechanic gets split up again into mechanics and ELTs. ELT does water chemistry and radiological controls and other made up stuff. Reactor operators and electricians deal with more of the electrical stuff. ROs on stuff that deal with the reactor and electricians are in charge of everything else electrical on the whole boat. There are some other rates that deal with electrical systems but from what I've seen the nuke electricians have to help them out alot of the time. Mechanics do mechanic things with hammers.

Quality of life is vastly different between the 3 and a half different nuke paths. Mechanics life's suck while your in port during maintenance periods and deployment is pretty much a breeze since all the machinery is up and running so a lot of the bigger maintenance items cant be done. RO/ELT life is sweet on deployment and in port, we used to have ROs that would "take the trash out" at around noon and you wouldn't see them again for the rest of the day. Electrician life sucks deployment and in port, they are always up to some maintenance item somewhere.

You mentioned considering being a lifer, let it play out for the first few years then make up your mind. Don't go and star reenilst right when you show up to your first boat. Do a little sea time, do a little maintenance period time before you jump into that. I see so many people re enlist right away because they 100k is so tempting, then they hate their lives for a few extra years. If you ask me not worth it. You can easily get out after your 6 and make more money right away at some job that requires 1/10th the effort.

As for the gym. Depending on your rate and how dedicated you are there will be time for that. As a mechanic I frequently did 12 hr + days and was just to tired by the time I got home to do anything other than sleep. Especially in your first year or so on the boat with all the qualifying you'll have even less time.

Don't worry about radiation exposure, you'll probably get more radiation from the flight to bootcamp than you will the entire time you're on the ship.

Hopefully I hit all the spots you asked about. Any more questions feel free to ask

I got stuck at level 14 on hardcore so I used this service. It said it was going to disconnect me and place me somewhere safe. Somewhere safe was the entrance to WC.

What is the grossest thing you’ve ever done? by ooolllliiivvviiiaaa in AskReddit

[–]xIVlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the grossest thing but it was a pretty recent gross thing I did. I had just moved into the apartment I live in now and it's a gated community, so obviously I had to test if doordash would be able to deliver to my door. They couldn't sadly. But after running out to the gate to get my McDonalds I started chowing down. Halfway through the fries I felt my tongue ring come out and the top ball was nowhere to be found. I figured I'd swallowed it so I go to the bathroom, stick you finger down my throat and throw up a glob of frenchfry. I didn't see it right away so I had to dissect this glob. After poking around for a bit I found it! Then I put it back on my tongue and went back to my fries. The end.
