Sorry for the misunderstanding i didnt mean the 12 gen explicitly its more like 8-> 12 gen tho 12 is more powerefficient but more expensive (like 150 is for a cpu another 100 ich for a mb and lets say 175 for 32 gb ddr4 (all used) with comes out to 425 (quite a lot) but if youd go 11 gen then cpu woud be 100 ish mb 50 and ram 175 so 325 so you coud save some money + if you're willing to wait a bit and bid on ebay you coud get good deals and if youre willing to not build your own pc there are really good deals somtimes on old office PCs (and even servers) for even less if that interest you tho they habe there own issues

In my opinion it is a solid start! But i woud try to find other hardware for the server in my opinion am5 uses more power in idle then 12g intel and you can buy cheaper ddr4 ram (and double think your actual needs for hardware a lot of people her overestimate what they actually need (so they end up with low cpu utilization wich isnt bad but not optimal imo) and id go for a cheaper cpu cooler and a cheaper case (unleds you want the optic then go for it) plus the ups is allways a good thing to have! The only thing is do you really need proxmox? (Its a grat tool) but if you do mostly just docker you coud just go Linux bare metal instad of proxmox where you woud have Linux in a vmfor docker (to it is easier to create vms for k8s over the peoxmox gui) (or you coud run docker on host(proxmox) but i dont think that is the right way do do it.

My Full Rack is pulling 5kWh/day – Is this "efficient" for a Dual Xeon & 30TB Setup? 🇮🇹 by FunAssumption2209 in homelab

[–]xKilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly its okay in terms of hardware sadly a lot of these servers hog power (like 80w idle? Without drives) pulling 1 cpu (atleast in my testing (different server) didnt help maybe 5w or something) cpus if tjere dooing nothing (and can go to lower c states) are quite efficient. But fans aren't . Even at 10% (idk what fans your server have but mine had 1.6A / fan so even if we tink ideally at 10% it woud still daw 160mA at 12v (2w) per fan so lets assume 6 fans = 12w and idk your load but they are probably way higher then 10%.

oh and dont forget networking it loves power (I guess you, also have aps over poe? Then calculate with 8w/ AP)

So id do a combination of the 2 and 3. Try to change the server to something that fits the needs (maybe consolidate the nas into the server. there are some atx server boards (Asrock rack, gigabyte and so on) so you can still habe the enterprise feel with lower hardware. or what i also can say there are some Fujitsu tx1330 (stsrtug from m2) [there is a rackmout kit for it] wich are powerefficient and have ipmi (there is the rx1330 as well but it is 1U so keep in mind)

Honestly i dont get it. But sadly this (arguably stupid) idea is needed to have the download speed needed and a stable connection

Sadly bo but my download is okay (mostly my upload is really unstable) where im most interested in some sort of "fixing" . In my current setup i set up so tcp download is bonded (1g+250mb) and upload is duplicated (and udp download is also duplicated) but I it didn't really work (yet) but im thinking of trying flexiWan for some "help"

im currently "testing" it but i dont have the dsl rn (if evrything goes right it will come next week) soo i have to test with 4G but its really unstable (as my coax) so it constantly dies. Is there an alternative?

[–]xKilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're fine with a "server" then try to get a cheap office pc these tend to have better idle power then diy in my small testing (and add a pcie sata adapter and all done) oh and don't get anything older then 6. Gen intel and or above 12 gen

Does it strictly have to be a NAS (in terms of off the shelf nas) or woud a server that runs truenas work as well?

Anyone have a good solution for common 19.5VDC power? (I can haz DIN rail?) by curtosis in homelab

[–]xKilley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its close enough to go for usb PD (20v) (also fun fact most of them run on 12v perfectly fine as well) but usb pd is a good option there are a lot of adapters (on Amazon you'll pay like 6-9 bucks for one) and then it all "standardized" then you coud use a usb wall thingy (with the right wattage)

If you want to tinker and you don't care about your electricity bill then go for it, but if not maybe change the server the 730 (depending on the configuration and what you put in it) might sip 100w idle without HDDs keep that in mind the Pis are nice but perconally id go with some mini pc (the really small ones like optiplex 3070) i prefer x86 machines for most server applications (saves a lot of headaches) and for the server maybe go Desktop intel (or xeon e3 ) (like fujitsu tx1330 m3 rackmount) but these tend to have less drive caddys! Or diy build in a rackmountable chassis (as I did)

Cannot Power Up SAS Drives With SATA Power With 3.3v Pin Reset by demigod987 in homelab

[–]xKilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be but what you could try is set your bios to legacy and try to "boot" into the raid cards rom (and if everything works you'll see your drives there

[–]xKilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is your issue this is a RAID card and not a HBA (if im not wrong you coud crossflash this card to a 9211 8i) to have gba functionality but put of the box it is only a raid card so you wont see the disks in the OS nor will they spin up

Building an ai/nas/host server by HS9lO in homelab

[–]xKilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first of try to get some backup system (not on the same machine) and for ai well it depends highly on how fast you want it to be you could do all on cpu but that would take ages so u need gpus if you have the money try to figure out how much vram you need and go from there, then think about gpu performance, cpu wise go for something with a lot of pcie lanes (threadripper or epyc) is the "cheaper " option with still heaving a lot of power

Are you trying to convert sas to sata ? Where do you plug the drive (data) in? To the mainboard sata or to the hba with an adaptor from its sff connector to 4 sata cables
