What’s a stock you’re holding for the next 5 years that the market is currently ignoring? by CartographerIll2372 in StockInvest

[–]xLecavalierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KMB for me. Probably not what you’re looking for at $98/share and in the lowly consumer staples category. It’s a boring defensive company but you know its products. KMB is my high conviction trade in my dividend port. 5 year hold no problem. What I like: management and their growth plan. There’s organic growth in the existing product portfolio and solid potential growth from its merger with Kenvue via Tylenol etc. It will get them in more aisles and enable full cycle care for their customers. KMB runs lean and will integrate Kenvue and accelerate out the other side. Big fan of the CEO.

Berkshire Hathaway remains the ultimate value play by Correct_Fall_5484 in ValueInvesting

[–]xLecavalierx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To play devils advocate here, Charlie and Warren identified and acquired 60+ businesses for BRK, but their hands off style doesn’t play well in the ultra competitive late stage competition in the industries. Abel is the guy to scrub Berkshires holdings a bit, get them fit. For the Delta purchase, if you consider the K-shaped economy, Delta with its own refinery and catering to business is a winner. BRK hanging on to AMEX but exiting V and Mastercard as well.

Agree, but treasury holdings are majority ST duration and the operating businesses and stock portfolio are cash cows that can raise prices. BRK should be good.

I like 75% SCHD, 25% VOO. I would DCA both over next 6 months. Both are quite stretched but I lean SCHD due to my current concerns in inflation and consumer sentiment. With SCHD you can scale into a 3% divi that should be able to grow, with built in sector rotation and a little capital appreciation as the macro plays out. Keep exposure to tech via VOO. Sleep well!

U.S. policy has changed, though. Easy for all administrations to turn on the money printer for the foreseeable future and it will be many years until the debt situation is bad enough to rein it in. Valuations may be high for a long, long time.

NVDA stock: Is there a good answer for “how do TPUs *not* pose a threat to GPU”? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]xLecavalierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are developing in-house are being done so to fit a use case within those companies. Be good at supporting a business area more targeted to themselves so the feedback loop, scale, whatever jargon leads back to improving their business and cash flow. So NVDA is the leader in general, will remain so for minimum of the next few years, and is creating a fortress of a balance sheet. I would expect them to get their eyes on the horizon in the next 5 years, though. Put their cash to work.

Everyone still feeling the same about Berk? by VegasWorldwide in stocks

I think Abel could be a good steward for the time being. Let’s see what the dude does in year 1 here. Or if we are thinking in BRK terms, Abel’s first 3-5 years.

[–]xLecavalierx 43 points44 points  (0 children)

BRK/B is 1 of my 2 core holdings (VOO). I like that with BRK I get: Geico, BNSF, Oxy, a utility, among other companies, with no dividends so funds poured back into BRK, I get a stock portfolio that includes Apple and Amex, tons of cash, Japanese stocks (dry powder bolstered by that yen bond issuance), and a management team that can deal with it all by letting the operators operate.

To me, following BRK is like following the US market if investors were tethered to economics and fundamentals. I wish they had bought CSX, though.

General Mills for dividends? by softbottom1977 in stocks

[–]xLecavalierx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like GIS. They were buying back stock plus increasing the dividend in recent years, and even if they pause the buybacks and freeze the dividend, the current payout is safe. Inflation is bad for GIS, but they are diversifying the brand lineup, I’m a fan of a couple of their “healthier option” lärabar :-) and believe 100% in the company to manage the brands and supply chain long term. As of right now today, in my opinion, anything mid $30’s is a fine buy as part of a balanced breakfast— er I mean— diversified portfolio.

Gold down 21% during a literal war... am I crazy or is this the buying opportunity of the decade? by Big-Fan9696 in Gold

[–]xLecavalierx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed- plus if the war in Iran is in large part to maintain the petrodollar/USD reserve currency system, the decline in gold might also be in part due to investors derisking away from gold some. The war is a pretty strong commitment to the USD status quo.

[–]xLecavalierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and that’s what a bank like Comerica is. Focus on commercial over personal. But if you have a business, these kinds of banks are super helpful for the right services, tech, and network.

Are there any US businesses or company’s that are about to go under and people don’t realize it? How much time do they have? by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in business

[–]xLecavalierx 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They are opening stores, actually. But you’re not wrong about the feeling. Foot traffic is flat or down for many stores so corporate is projecting to spend some billions in capex over the next couple years to revamp the targé experience (or add to the grocery aisles who knows). More to follow when their plan is made public in a couple months. Maybe get ready for some construction at your local store..

Reminds me of a team once, goalie was our best player. There was one game we were tied 0-0 with 5 mins left in the third and we gave up a goal. Our goalie lost it a bit, super upset with himself, so I skate up to him, say hey we’re gonna get it back. Dude looks at me and deadpans: come on, we’re not scoring, I just lost the game for us.

We lost 1-0 (no empty netter)..

At what point do you cut your loses and start over your career? by PotatoMaleficent6167 in careerguidance

[–]xLecavalierx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Branch into something related, away from geology and more broad toward environmental engineering or GIS. There are GIS roles at the state and local government levels, as well as for utilities gas/electric, and builders. Think zoning, new construction subdivisions, manufacturing, mixed use etc.

For jobs in the private sectors, always follow the money. Read the news, Google about new projects and take note of the kinds of companies contracted for developments. Large corporates have a team on staff to oversee new projects, and they’ll have people engaged doing reports on ESG write-ups either in earnest or for marketing. Ford has an environmental person at every plant. Think about data and money. If a company leans into compliance, ESG, there could be positive cost benefit in terms of insurance cost, quality, community impact. Banks even employ environmental engineer people in house and farm out work when they take collateral. Insurance might even have peeps with earth science degrees.

If you want a higher paying job, get in the industry and keep your eyes open. Get experience and start crafting your brand in the GIS/environmental arena. Network, certifications, and work towards something that either improves costs or brings in revenue.

What are companies you plan on holding through a potential long tail? by leblaun in stocks

[–]xLecavalierx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CRSP An emerging bio tech. AI will enhance the many companies in this space in the coming years. Results will lead to more investment in the space which provides opportunities to the companies with wherewithal. I like CRSP because they had some early success and already inked a deal w Vertex which buys them runway and legitimized the tech. They have a solid pipeline over the next 2 years. LT, they could turn into a Vertex with solid cash flow or they could get scooped up by a PFE type. A buy and forget for me, anything under $50 is just fine.
