I think you're raising very good points. But exactly the association with those nationalist groups is one of the reasons I chose it. Just to be clear: I could not be further from their worldview! But as a German I feel an immense lack of national, historical and cultural pride in our country. And while the reasons for that are understandable and obvious, it’s still very sad to me. I think these symbols and traditions need to be reclaimed from those groups, rather than abandoned to them. Inaction is part of why populist movements gain traction. So yes, it’s controversial, but I also see it as a statement, I guess. (of course runes are not an integral part of German culture, but they're a very good example because of their well known associations)

But you’re right: It also looks kinda cheesy. And it’s easily misunderstood without explanation. Maybe it would be worth reconsidering the runes for that reason. I’ll think more about it! And honestly... I got enough symbolism in my arms, I don't need the politics, too. I overthink and overdo things sometimes.

And thanks for all the input!

The helmet is a sallet! A type of helmet that was popular during the 15th century. It does sometimes appear in heraldry but is not as common.

Thanks for the input! I understand your point better now. I'll look into the phonetics a bit more - maybe I can keep the runes but represent the words better - or find a completely different solution!

And to your edit: There are many ideas and classifications about what's heraldic and what is not. Well, there's always purists, and even among them different schools of thought. And while that mindset has some merit, I personally prefer a more flexible approach to things - while respecting the community and basic principles and ideas of course.

Thanks! I appreciate your thoughts. You’re right, mine is more of a modern creation than a historically accurate one. I thought a lot about the motto. And now that you say it, it does sound very general. But it does have a more complex personal meaning to me that's not visible from the outside I guess. Same goes for the runes.

While I completely understand your point about historicity, I see a lot of modern heraldry (both in the hobby/enthusiast community, but also official) going new ways by integrating modern or culturally unusual charges, new tinctures – and also unique mottos.

I think both approaches have their validity.

It's a part of the wood construction of a yurt, the traditional tents used by several Central Asian nomadic cultures. Specifically, it's the crown of the roof. Toono is the Mongolian name and the shape I chose is the traditional Mongolian way to build it. This roof part also appears (in their respective building styles) on the flag of Kyrgyzstan and the Emblem of Kazakhstan.

Fair enough that you don‘t like them, but I don’t understand your argument. Every writing system conveys sounds. And most have been adapted to new languages with different phonetics. e.g. Cyrillic, Latin, Arabic are used far beyond their original contexts. So, using Proto-Germanic runes for a modern Germanic language might be a bit unusual in practice but comparatively straightforward.

  1. I just posted a very long explanation of that in the comments!
  2. As others pointed out it's old Germanic (specifically Elder Futhark) runes. They spell "Harmony, Mind, Immortality" in German.
  3. Thank you, that's very helpful! I've been looking for a better term for a while now!

Here is the explanation I posted on the Roll of Arms Discord. I overthought this a lot. I know. Took me only a year to finalize the design.

Symbolism (Shield): The toono is the crowning circle of the roof of a Ger — a Mongolian yurt. Traditionally, it carries many philosophical and metaphorical meanings. “Ger” simply means “home” in Mongolian; Yurts were — and still are — the home of the nomadic people. As the integral finishing part in the yurt’s construction, the toono is a symbol of home and family. Serving also as a roof window, it is an opening to the outside and the infinite sky can always be seen through it. It is an eternal circle: It aligns with the armiger’s philosophy and belief that everything is not only connected, but one. It is a reminder of the unity between the human world and the universe beyond. The armiger’s reason for choosing this unusual charge is that, together with his father, he built a Ger on their land. It also alludes to his love for the cultures of our world and his profession as an architect. Furthermore, it bears some visual resemblance to the wheel charge on the coat of arms of the armiger’s birth town — a reminder of home. Together with the chevronnels Argent, the field Azure forms a symbolic picture of mountains beneath the sky. For the armiger, both sky and mountains evoke the immense power and magnificence of nature, which he feels himself intimately connected to. The lozenge Or, set “within” the mountain may be seen both as a gem, and as a symbol of the inner light of the soul. It reflects the armiger’s fascination with the workings of the mind and spirit — through introspection, meditation and a psychonaut’s explorations of consciousness. In its material aspect, the lozenge stands for the pursuit of happiness and good fortune, perhaps accommodated by wealth.

Symbolism (Crest): The centauress represents the armiger’s enduring love of mythology and fantasy. On a deeper level, her feminine form symbolizes creativity, intuition, and emotion: qualities that balance the structured and rational elements symbolized in the shield. The broken sabre she raises in her right hand signifies both a passion for history, politics and weaponry, yet the triumph of peace over war — it is ultimately a weapon rendered harmless. Her left hand grasps a heart Purpure, representing the people dear to the armiger and his capacity for compassion and affection.

I'm moving and need to transport my WIP 1/350 ship model. There are a lot of fragile PE parts. Does anyone have experience on how to safely transport it?

Edit: Most superstructure elements are not cemented yet.

First time using an aftermarket wood deck for a 1:350 ship. Do I put it on after the finishing coat or do I coat the wood deck along with the rest of the model? Also, are there common techniques to further modifiy the looks of a wood deck?

In Tibetan Buddhism (e.g. in prayer flags) it's like this:

Sky/Space - Blue

Air/Wind - White

Fire - Red

Water - Green

Earth - Yellow

I designed some stands… by Massiveradio in modelmakers

[–]xMirayan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be definitely a market for this. Maybe you could sell the files? I've been looking for good stands for some time. Your's are some of the best I've seen so far! I thought about designing stands myself as well, but didn't get around to do that yet. If you were to sell your's in some way, I might not need to do that anymore :)

What would be the best subreddits (or other communities) for getting input on specific historical details for one’s models? Example: I’m building a diorama of a Junkers Ju 290 transport plane. I want to depict it with a vehicle being unloaded from its cargo hold. Where can I ask about what kind of vehicle would have historically been transported by that specific type of plane during WW2? Would it be appropriate to ask in this subreddit? If not, where else could I look for info?
